I am confused on the choices or just don't understand.
This is my need: trying to find alternative to cable for my parents. They do not need internet, watch mostly CBS, or other basic cable. They will need a new tv. Do we NEED smart tv or just HD? Would a Roku or Fire Stick work or I hear of Sling? They are on an extreme budget yet they only watch TV so I want to get them the best option.
Thank you in advance 😊

You have to have internet to stream tv. Then, you can use a smart tv or a Roku stick, chrome cast or fire stick to access the programs.

Then, they would need a service. The three biggest ones that include network stations and various cable stations are Directtv now, Sling and PlayStation vue.

Can they get what they need over the air? This is, of course, the cheapest option

A newer tv will allow you to hook up a HD antenna for basic cable stations. That will be free.

Impulsively, I purchased an HD antenna from Amazon for around $16 and it works like a charm. We get all the networks and dozens of weird channels. I tried it in my neighbor's house and it did not work nearly as well. I think the location in your house makes a huge difference. I can't speak to how it compares to cable as we cut the cord over three years ago. We have internet w/ Netflix and Spotify.

Unfortunately, I live in a stucco house and our indoor HD antennas are next to useless. Something about the mesh in the stucco interfering with the reception. It has to be stuck on the window (which is an eyesore) in order to get decent reception. Do your homework on them if you go this route.

You need the internet to stream. We cut cable except internet and without bundling internet price doubled. Over air broadcast gets quite a few channels.

We have stucco, but the antenna is on the wall inches from the window. The signal really does look nice with the TV. SaveSave
