My 12 year old just told me that he is trying to sell his Nintendo 2DS on an app called Mercari. I looked at it and it looks like there is a buyer but the app is taking shipping fees and selling fees (10%) out of what he would make. He doesn't have any bank account jnfo on there. It says that the sale is in progress and waiting for him to ship the item but I don't see where the other person could have paid for it.
I have never heard of this App and am wondering if it's legit? What would you do with this sale at this point?

When Lularoe recently started falling apart and consultants began selling off their inventory at very reduced prices, Mercari was mentioned often. Several people said they use Mercari and Poshmark as selling sites. This was the first time I heard about Mercari. It’s not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it seems to be somewhat legitimate.

I have made 3 purchases from Mercari. Then I stopped because I had a problem with a transaction there was no way to contact the non-existent customer service.
I have no experience as a seller, though.

Never heard of it, but a quick look at their terms shows this:

Yeah, I'm sure he isn't old enough to do it on his own and we have already talked about the problems with this. I'm just not sure if we should go ahead with the transaction or not. There is a place where it says "cancel transaction" so it must not be unheard of. I have hesitations in part because I don't know how the site works, they are taking $12 out of his profits for shipping and selling fees (although the price isn't bad to start with, I don't think) and I don't want my bank info on there if DS might be sneaky and use it. But yet it still seems kind of crappy to cancel the transaction.

I have no experience with the app but I would cancel it. Can you sell it on ebay?

It would behoove you to read their terms.
Sounds like you have to ship prior to receiving payment. No way I'd do that.

I, personally, would cancel the transaction. I wouldn’t want to reward that type of behavior in my 12 y.o. He can go to Game Stop with you, or set up an online sale with you - if you want to do that. But doing this without permission at his age doesn’t feel like a great idea.

I have purchased an item from mercari. i believe people use it to take advantage of lower ship rates but not sure how that works.

My 14 year old sells her excess squishies on Mercari. I think it is linked to Instagram. I would have to study it more if it were anything of value.

We had talked about selling it already (he also bought it with his own money) but he didn't think the payment part through. I'm still not happy about it, though. I was feeling bad about canceling more for the buyer than for DS.

I have sold several things there and all has gone well. But I think selling electronics is risky. The app is definitely more buyer friendly than seller friendly. It would be easy for a buyer to rip you off because they almost always side with the buyer in a dispute. I have only sold things that I wouldn't care if I got ripped off (things I would have donated to goodwill).
Mercari has the buyer's money right now. Once the buyer receives the item, they rate you, then the funds get released to you. If they don't rate you after three days you ask for your money (I got it within hours). They have tracking info so they know exactly when the item was delivered. You then ask for them to transfer your money to your bank account. You have to ask for it by Saturday and they only transfer money on Mondays. I get my money by Wednesday in my account.
I LOVE IT for what I use it for. I sell all the things I would put in a garage sale. Their fees are way lower than eBay and their shipping prices for things over a pound are great.
Look at the rating on your buyer. If they only have a couple of transactions I may not trust them. If they have dozens, they are probably fine.
Good luck! I have actually made quite a bit of money on things I would have just dropped off at goodwill.

Then they won't transfer it until the next Monday. I have NO idea why it works this way. It is the only thing I think is really strange about it.

Yes, your particular amount won’t amount to much, but the amassed total of all the sales is large. They are probably earning another 1.30% or more on the total in holding.

They don't have any listing fees so you can list as much as you want and change anything at anytime. You don't have any PayPal fees so that saves you a lot. I guess they have to make money somewhere. But you are trusting some random company with no phone number with your money (I don't trust them) which is why I don't sell things I would be heartbroken to lose money on. When I did have an issue they got back to me within a couple of hours on email though, which was good. I was expecting it to take days.
