It sounds funny to me that you say a deer hit you. Was it the other way around? You hit the deer that ran in your way? Glad you are safe. My understanding is if it's in the road and you hit it head-on, then you hit it. He came from across the road and plowed into the side of us. Kind of like a T-bone hit. A friend said his insurance wanted to know if he hit the deer or if the deer hit him. He said it made a difference.

Scares the heck out of me!
I had one land on my windshield once. Thank goodness for safety glass. As it hit, I thought "So this is how it ends." It was that scary! Second time, I hit one head on with my car (hit the side of the deer), crumpling the front end. That was quite a repair but was mostly covered by insurance. Almost hit one on the way to work tonight too, but saw it in time.

Glad you are OK. My brother and SIL have hit three in the past two years. They live in a very rural area and those deer come out of nowhere. It's pretty scary!

Glad you are ok. And that is why we carry insurance. Deer have very poor side vision and he list a lot more than you. I live in an area with lots of deer.... It is only a matter of time before my luck runs out!

Glad you are ok.
Redarding the airbags. They are designed to go off only in a high energy impact. A deer or even a moose does not have a high enough weight to make the energy of the crash high enough.
Airbags are designed to save lives but the also do a lot of damage to the interior of the car which would need replacing. If you think a wing mirror is expensive.....you won't want the bill for the airbags and steering wheel.
Because the US does not have seat belt laws the airbags has to be bigger and more aggressive. Which means much higher chances of injuries to the driver (face and hands) so they are designed to go off when you hit another car/solid wall/big tree.

So glad you are both fine. I posted a few weeks ago about our friend who was riding his motorcycle to work. A deer ran out right in front of him. He was in critical condition but thankfully is recovering.

Glad you are ok. In our state there is no deductible, no surcharges at least when it's deer related (act of nature they call it I believe?!)
We live in a very wooded area also and I am always worried about my kiddos driving at night. dd clipped one on Christmas last year. My word of warning to them, if one crosses, be very cautious because there's probably a 2nd with it. dh apparently didn't know this one and could have avoided a collision if he'd slowed.

Glad you are okay. I am fearful of hitting a deer when I drive at night.
My brother is a deliveryman and a deer glanced off his truck and ran off. My brother was okay.
Take care.

I do not know if it is because of where I live or my car insurance, but I did not pay a penny when a deer hit me last year. I was traveling on a back road and was able to come to a complete stop when I saw her running down the side of a hill toward the road. I stopped but she did not...she hit my driver side window, flew on top of the car and slid down the hood on the passenger side. I am so nervous about deer. There was a horrible accident near my work where the initial accident was caused when a vehicle hit a deer. A second car hit the deer carcass then went across the median and into a tanker truck. That impact knocked out the car’s engine, causing a third car, to hit the engine. The tanker truck overturned and one of its tires came off and rolled into and caused an accident with a fourth car. Several people were hurt and one was killed. (I copied this from the online article because I could not remember the exact chain of events)

And I never heard that our airbags were bigger and more aggressive. And a deer hit my DH years ago, knocked out the headlight and the framing around it. He just fixed it himself rather than get the insurance involved. Was done a lot faster too! And yes, if you see one deer, slow WAY down because there are a lot more behind them.

Unfortunately, hitting deer is a way of life where I live. I personally have hit (or they hit me) at least six. My husband has hit three or four, and each of our girls have hit at least one. We are taught from a very early age, never swerve to avoid a deer. Hitting a tree or another car is much worse than hitting the deer. Then there are the close calls too! Thankfully there is no deductible on the insurance.
Glad you are all OK!

Let me correct myself. Or rather rephrase that. There are still many states that do not have primary laws that mean police can ticket non seatbelt wearers. The statistics are getting better, but there are still a shocking number of people that don't wear belts. The percentage is much lower for secondary states. Which means the IIHS has a requirement that US cars airbags have to protect a non-belted driver. Here in Europe the requirement is a bag that complements the belt. I don't remember the sizes exactly, US bags are somewhere in the region of 50% bigger. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbag

I think most of the people in my son's generation use seat belts (at least in CA.) When he was in a roll-over accident in Vegas 4 years ago, all 7 of them were belted in otherwise there would have been deaths. They grew up belted in so it is second nature. My parent's generation was harder to convince. My aunt used to take scissors and cut the belts out when they bought new cars back in the 70-80's.

My used '66 Chevy was the first car I had that had seat belts. Started using them right away, have ever since! Trying to remember when shoulder belts came on the scene, they do cause bruises.

We hit a deer about five miles from our home about 15 years ago. It was dusk, my DH hit it and I looked in my sideview mirror and said omg you just hit a dog. It flew over the hood of our car. DH said no, it was a deer. Not one minute later a guy in a pickup truck came by and asked if we wanted him. Um-no. Poor deer. Our car was in the shop (actually it was a company car ) for about three weeks. On a happier note, about two hours ago, again around dusk, there were eleven deer in our yard! The smallest (baby) was coming up from behind, really cute.

Glad you're ok, those are scary and deadly! My grandparents had that happen, they had to get a new car, my grandma was seriously hurt. That one took them a while to recover. Scary stuff! Hope you're not feelin it too much. Sometimes you don't feel it till later.

Ugh, it happens here too. They just come out of no where. My husband managed the ambulance service up here in the later parts of his working life, having been on the road in the service since he was a teenager. I know that at least two ambulances were written off by deer crashing into them in recent years. There was a badly injured deer in the drainage ditch by the side of the house a while ago. No one here carries guns so could not put it out of its misery and I had no way of contacting the local gamekeeper. A farmer eventually came and removed it. It’s interesting how your insurers treat damage by deer. I’m sure that doesn’t happen over here. Hope you are feeling ok OP

Ugh.... I love all wildlife, but dear can be deadly. I am glad your auto was the only thing harmed. We have a ton of deer near us and one of my biggest fears is hitting them and the subsequent damage.
