My dad is so difficult to buy for. He doesn't really get excited about presents, there's nothing he really wants, he has no hobbies. Usually I get him some undershirts or socks in the brands he likes, and that's fine. I'm Facebook friends with Dad's first cousin Jim, and he just wrote a memoir about his growing-up years and self-published it. Dad and Jim are just about the same age, grew up in the exact same area, went to the same school and church, lived near each other, so I know this book will spark a lot of memories for Dad. Hopefully good ones! I bought a copy for myself because I'm interested in family history, and one for Dad for Christmas. Dad isn't on Facebook so he won't know anything about it. I get excited about giving gifts and I just love that feeling when you find something really good. Have you ever found the perfect gift for a difficult person?

That sounds like an awesome gift, I bet he will love it!
I've just started thinking about Christmas shopping, so many hard to buy for people.

Congrats on finding the perfect gift for your dad!
I've barely started thinking about Christmas presents this year, but I always try and come up w/ presents I think my friends and family will really like. Some years I do better than others. Last year I gave my sister in law a Shutterfly book w/ about 20 years' worth of pictures I had taken of our family Christmas celebrations. I also included the photo Christmas cards she has sent out the last 20 years and pictures of her Christmas decorations. I think she really enjoyed it.
My brother in law is really hard to buy for because he's not interested in many things other than politics. I ordered a personalized Tervis tumbler for him one year w/ the name of a political newspaper he co-publishes printed on it. He uses it all the time and really seems to love it.
Last year all the young guys in my family got Peter Millar shirts w/ their favorite college teams' insignias on them. Those went over really well.
I'd better get busy w/ my list for this year!

My sister in law writes poetry...and one year my brother snuck out her journal and gave it to me.
I laboured for a couple of months rewriting in fancy writing, typing etc her poems (not all of them) and then decorated the pages (similar to a scrapbook) and gave it to her for Christmas.
On the day, she opened it, glanced at it and said thank you. I was disappointed in her reaction, but shrugged and thought that's the last thing I would personally do for her...
It wasn't until a day or two later, she phoned me, crying to properly thank me. She said she did not realise what the book was until she picked it up a day later and looked again, with more time. She still treasures it to this day.....
It's a fab feeling when you do something right for someone!

Most of my loved ones are the kind of people who insist they don't want gifts and they don't need anything but, secretly, want a surprise on Christmas Eve. It's a very difficult situation. I have to navigate constant disappointment and zero clues about what to get them. Drives me nuts. I think about Christmas gifts all. year. long. Doesn't help that the main culprit's (my mother) birthday falls just weeks before Christmas. More gifts to find! So far, this year, no perfect gifts found yet but a few good ones. I have learned to be happy and satisfied with "just good." Congrats on finding just the right gift! I hope your father will have a wonderful walk down memory lane.

Great gift! Give him a notebook and pen and ask him to write down the memories it sparks for him!

Sounds like a perfect present. I love when that happens. That's my aim each Christmas. Sometimes the items cost a lot, but often they are moderately priced. Makes all the thinking and shopping worthwhile.

Perhaps next year's gift is a trip back to the area? Love that you found the perfect gift.

That sounds like a great present. I hope he loves it! My dad is similar when it comes to buying him things. I have not had inspiration hit yet.

Awwww, that's wonderful. Years ago my mom told me that she had always wanted a teddy bear made out of real fur. She grew up really poor, spent her whole life low-income, and just thought it was an incredible luxury item. I think she saw one in a magazine when she was a little girl. But one year when I was into sewing (at least 15 years ago), I got an old, battered mink coat off ebay, tore it apart, and made a bear for her. She actually cried when I gave her that.

Mystie, I bet your dad will love that! What a thoughtful gift. And I love gillyp's idea of giving him a notebook to record his own memories that pop up while he's reading.

I know the feeling! My middle boy has a girlfriend. She's 17 and she is into art. She makes amazing drawing and paintings and she is really into cartoons. I found a lightbox, the kind you hang on a wall, in the shape of a text bubble, that you can write things on. I just know she'll love it. The whole thing was only 7 euro's or so, it's not even an expensive gift, but I'm really looking forward to giving it to her The book sounds like a great gift!
