I totally agree, and thank all those giving out candy.
My neighborhood is a little rough, and fewer and fewer houses are participating in TOT. It thrills my kids to get the candy and walk around in costume.
Do we have a weird great thread yet? No lie, my kids got a soy sauce packet and a Famous Dave's bbq sauce packet. Why though?

I sat right next to the front door in my house. I wasn't going to stay outside all night! I have no idea how many we had. They came from 5:00 to around 9:30. There is no designated time in my town. I gave out about 8 bags of mini candy bars and everyone only got one! The rest of the peas are more generous than me. I was sad/not sad we had one bag left. I wanted leftovers, but don't need them. My favorite was a two year old boy dressed as a Transformer who knocked continuously until I opened the door. It reminded me of Sheldon on The Big Bang theory. I could tell it was someone small. I opened it and he put his hand out like I don't get this, but you put candy in my hand. His parents, who were waiting on the front lawn were busting up laughing when I opened the door and apologized.

I love Halloween. We gave out candy to about 150 trick or treaters of all ages last night. Only two house on our street decorate and two others gave out candy but no decorations. I wish more participated. I'm an admitted Halloween junkie. I decorate the yard and front patio, string lights in the trees, make dh wear a couples costume with me to hand out candy, have my kids pose for a million photos in costumes, dress up the cat, etc. Lots of trick or treaters will take photos in our yard too. I LOVE that they enjoy the decorations. It is all so much fun!

We got about 40 I think. We usually have 35-50, but wouldn't have had that many this year except for a family with 7 kids who were the first bunch for us. Their grandparents live across the street so they were there for pictures and then came across to our house.
It was cold here and we didn't end up with very many little kids. And there were more than usual who were coming in by car, maybe partly because of the weather. We don't have a lot of kids on our street, and never have in the years we've lived here.
We give out full size candy bars, packs of gum, bags of chips or mini cookies. We have Goldfish crackers for little ones. I let the kids choose one from the tub. Some kids are totally blown away and have a hard time choosing. Some ask "Just one?" after I've already said that, and some try to sneak two Hershey bars. Those aren't as much fun as the ones who say "I knew this was the house." One parent near the end of the time said "we always try to get here before it's over and we were walking really fast to make it!" We got quite a few middle school and maybe high schoolers right before 8pm (time is 5-8 for almost all the towns here), including some who are collecting for the food drive competition between schools while also trick-or-treating. They got to choose two.
Some comments are funny, sometimes because they don't always make sense, or do only to the kid. We had one group of young kids who were really happy with the full-size choices. The boy was the oldest and he said "No wonder you have an upstairs!" - as if having a two-story house means you can afford to give out the good stuff. We always get at least one kid who comments about liking our house. I told one little girl that her dress was really pretty (although covered by a winter coat so you could only see the skirt) and she replied with "I know." which cracked me up.

That's a sweet OP. I get so excited to give out candy, and I'll tell you why.
When I was growing up in the 60s, my mom made candy apples for the trick or treaters every year at Halloween. The kitchen was filled with bushels of apples and the stovetop was fired up all day with mom boiling sugar, water and food coloring and dipping apples. (My job was poking sticks into the apples first.) She made - literally - hundreds of candy apples, and kids came from all over town for them. At 8 pm she would shut the door and call it done, and I remember high school kids standing outside our house calling her name....."Mrs. so and so, we want a candy apple!" She had the biggest heart and made every holiday a special occasion.
I try to do the same but just don't have her talent. Still, I think we are a pretty good house for treats, and every year on Halloween I think of my mom and her generous spirit.

I almost didn't pass any out this year but I'm so glad I did. My kids are grown but my daughter usually comes and does it with me, this year she didn't. I also didn't even put up any decorations this year.
At the last minute I told husband to bring home some candy, I put the costume on the dog and took him on the porch to sit out there with me.
It was cold and we didn't get as many as we usually do but it was still fun. Every one was really polite, even the teenagers that were taller than me and not in costume. Lol I never care though whether they are in costume or not.
This was a nice post!
Oh- my dd took her nephew to another neighborhood with a friend and the friend told her they had to stop at this house she had been going to since she was a little girl. My dd said they went inside and it's an older lady and her whole house is just decorated with lights and Halloween decor and the lady was dressed up as a witch. She had Halloween music playing and a hallloween show on tv. She had birds and their cages were all decorated. She said it was the coolest thing she had ever seen and she wants us to start doing that. It does sound so fun!

Thanks for your lovely post.
You know I always dread the thought of handing out treats in the days leading up to Halloween but then when the kids, young and old, come to the door I quite enjoy it. We had about 140 kids this year, a bit less than normal but it was fun. I dressed as a sim (plumbob I made on my head) and the teens loved it. I usually rather go out with my son trick or treating but it was a fun 2 hours handing out treats this year.

Such a nice thread, ohYvonne We always love seeing all the costumes, giving out candy, and we dress up our doggies and most kiddos and adults get a kick out of them and pet them. Many people also comment on how BIG they are---I guess because bulldogs are so STOUT and COMPACT! One girl last night gave me and my husband little Happy Halloween wishes she had drawn on notebook paper and carefully folded up--never had that happen before! Mystie ---Wow! What a SWEET little girl !!! I wonder how many notes she wrote?

I couldn't do it this year. I did buy candy and give it out at my church trunk or treat though. I also made up 7 bags of candy bars and took it to the three kids next door, and one on the other side, and three bags for three of the grandkids that will be here tomorrow. I can't give out candy at my home anymore because my large noisy dog barks too loud and would scare the kids away, and I can't hold him back and open the door at the same time. So this year, I opted for the church. Gave away a TON of candy.
