My DD is turning 21 My very best friend is turning 50
Need two good gift ideas, not expensive but memorable.
I'm stuck. I did get DD a cute wine glass that marks her 21st.
Best friend doesn't live nearby, and I can't make it to her surprise party (it's over Thanksgiving weekend and no way I could make it) She isn't the type who would expect an expensive thing, or name brand. I have always teased her saying her middle name is 'coupon' as since she has always had a coupon for anything since she the day we met.
I keep trying to THINK of something a bit different...

for your friend - 50 somethings...if she likes chocolate, then 50 pieces of chocolate; if she likes tea, then 50 tea-bags and so on...

For 50th birthdays I gave a number of friends a copy of Life magazine from the week they were born. Every time I was near an antique mall I would flip through the magazine stacks and found most of the ones I was looking for.
One of my BFFs also got a special edition 50th anniversary reprint of To Kill A Mockingbird. The book was originally published on her birthday.
ETA you can check out the best seller book lists and/or buy her the Best Picture winner from 1967.

Do you have pictures of the two of you for years? You could put a collection of pictures (50?) into an inexpensive photo holder (Michael's) and mail it to her. When I retired on my 50th birthday, the ladies got a slide show together and I loved seeing all the pictures from the beginning of my teaching days.
