going to bed-- do you do this?
I've heard "I'm putting them down" and then, when the kids are confirmed to be asleep: "they're OUT".
Sounds sort of like a hitman or sniper talking.

You know, now that you mention it, even "Sandman" sounds sinister. Off to Never Neverland.

You know, now that you mention it, even "Sandman" sounds sinister. Especially if you've seen/read "Logan's Run". I don't have children, but I've always thought "putting down" was an odd phrase, especially when people say the same thing in reference to pets, yet mean something completely different!

To put someone down is to insult them. So I guess putting children down might include short people jokes.

I would put my grandson down for a nap but I don't think I use that phrase for putting him to bed for the night. Odd 🙂

I've used the phrase, "I'm putting XYZ down (for a nap/in his crib)" plenty of times when my kids were small.

Up the wooden hills to Bedfordshire sounds much gentler.

I would say I am about to put the kids down, or something like i will cook dinner after the kids are down. I used the phrase 'out for the count' when they were sound asleep.

Hadn't thought of that. It's one of my favorite movies and I just rewatched it the other week after something like 20 plus years. Yes, the Sandmen terminated runners. I was actually thinking at first of the Metallica song Enter Sandman, creepy lyrics!

This reminds me of one of my favorite lines from Happy Gilmore: "You will go to sleep, or I will put you to sleep! Check out the name tag. You're in my world now, grandma"
