So on the don't need anymore thread someone mentioned Rae Dunn mugs...
Who is Rae Dunn??? Why is she popular?? What started the white with black letters craze???
I see it all over my igram.. lots of people I follow collect.. and show off their latest finds... its cute but I like the colors of fiesta or pioneer woman better...
Just wondering..

It's a bigger version of our all buying a recommended product. I've bought so many things that Peas bring to my attention.
Rae Dunn is a California artist whose products are "THE" current hot item because they are not mass produced, so getting one is a status symbol.
I'm reminded of the frenzy to acquire the Elmo toys a few years ago. If you scored one for your child it was akin to saying your toddler had already been accepted into Harvard.
I ain't buyin' no Rae Dunn stuff.

I like them, but I've liked her for a few years. Simple stuff. I just got 2 dog bowls from her and they are plain and cute at the same time. And yes, TJM I didn't realize she was super popular

My sister loves Rae Dunn. She has tons of mugs and plates and bowls. She gave a mug to my mom and my mom said it gets too hot in the microwave, and then read there's a warning on the bottom, so you can't even use the mugs in an easy way. They're cute but not practical.

The Rae Dunn that everyone on instagram are collecting, are very easily found at all our TjMaxx, Home Goods & Marshalls stores in mass amounts.
For the most part the people on ig i see collecting it, are into white on white country home decorating & the Rae Dunn fits into that decor nicely.
I never buy it but i sort of love the coffee mug collections I've seen on ig.

I just Googled and it's those plain white mugs and housewares that have a word that looks like it's written with a black pen?! I've seen them on Instagram I didn't think they were a hot ticket and sought after they look cheap and mass produced. A little too plain and simple.

Her items are in several stores, but they can be hard to actually get your hands on. So when you do find one its like you are winner. A winner of what though, is the question. LOL SaveSave

In some areas people requested notification when her items would arrive, to the point merchandise was snapped up without ever making it to the sales area.
Crazy!

I personally don't think they're a status symbol either (I don't even own any lol), but there are FB groups that absolutely do. I got put into one (thanks to a friend 🙄) and they have "Dunn girl of the week" showcasing their collection and these people are treated like a freaking royalty. I left as soon as I finished eyeroling at all the ass kissing.

so getting one is a status symbol. Bwaahaahaaa! tee hee hee! Right? Certainly not the platters and mugs that are being warehoused at HomeGoods stores all over the US. Maybe the original pieces she shows? Maybe that's it.

I have a couple of items...a serving plate and a platter. They are cute and fit with what I have going on in my kitchen but I hate the shape of the coffee mugs and they aren't big enough for me...I need a 17oz so I can put in enough milk 😉

I liked the stamped products better. I don't like the font or hand lettered? items.

Only because they are trying to grab them up and resell them on eBay at very inflated prices. It's a brand that comes up often on a couple of eBay groups I follow.

I read the Rae Dunn post here, then went to FB and lo and behold there's a Rae Dunn ad for mugs in the side bar.
Not getting it at all. And I can do that with some vinyl and my Silhouette Cameo.
I guess good for her for cashing in.

had to google... i have seen mugs like this before but assumed they were from chapters indigo (our biggest book store that comes out with new mug lines every year), just in time for holiday gift giving.
i expect if they are a "thing" you won't be able to give them away in a couple of months.... isn't that usually how it works?

I think I started all this but holy moly I didn't realized I would be judged so rigorously!
My BFF collected and I hunted for her. I thought it was fun, the same way that we hunt together for her vintage Pyrex and my depression glass pattern. Sometimes we find something, sometimes we don't, but the hunt is always fun. The biggest change was instead of vintage hunting, we were retail hunting.
I don't know what makes them collectible, other than they are hard to find most of the time, and you are competing against resellers who upsell. I do agree it's like beanie babies all over again, with certain vintage lines being hard to find, and all kinds of social groups to share collections, trade, and hunt for each other.
I never thought of finding any of it as a trophy any more than finding a piece of my depression pattern being a trophy, but OK.
And I do have fun collecting the different words.
But they are totally made in China and mass-produced. Just apparently not mass enough, hence the search. Although the fights that break out can be entertaining. Just try driving by one of those stores at opening and you can see the lions at the gate, waiting for the doors to open so they can pottery-pounce. I have not been enticed to attempt that gauntlet, but good on those who do, unless you are one who takes items out of other people's hands, carts, or gets in fights over it (which all happens).
