Shortly after the inauguration, Trump tweeted something about not bailing out Puerto Rico. I was curious, so I did some reading.
Yes, Puerto Rico was facing serious financial problems before Hurricane Maria. Most of those problems were caused by the U.S. Congress. Several years ago, PR was doing well because Congress had passed tax breaks to encourage pharmaceutical companies to set up manufacturing plants on the island. Those plants brought in a lot of money and jobs. Then, Congress took away the tax breaks. You can guess what happened.
I think it's reprehensible what this country's policies have done to PR. The people there are suffering and have been suffering for reasons beyond their control. Our government should be ashamed of the misery it's caused to American citizens.

My sister works for Henkel. They have business in PR. In addition to an employee relief fund, they have continued to pay their employees who live there. You can look up Henkel to see what kind of products they manufacture: Loctite, Dial, Persil,Purex and more.
Also, I just saw an article that TJMaxx, Marshalls and Homegoods have continued to pay their employees though their stores are currently closed.
Something to think about when we think about supporting Puerto Rico!
