I am hosting Thanksgiving for 29 people the year (15 kids) I ordered some Pottery Barn couches that I have had my eye. Today I got an e-mail wanting me to schedule a delivery day. I can either have them delivered before or after Thanksgiving. Part of me wants them delivered before Thanksgiving so my living room will complete. But the other part of me is scared half to death that my brand new, oatmeal color couches will be ruined by the company coming over.
Would you play it safe or take the risk? Jen

I think that might be a "First World" dilemma.

We had two nieces and a nephew stay with us for a week while their parents wen on a cruise. I asked that they not eat in the living room with the new furniture. Guess where they ate? I was at work and they were home by themselves, so they were old enough to follow directions. My furniture had stains that I could see for years after that visit. Just not worth it. Plus you don't want to spend your day worrying about anyone spilling something on them.

It wouldn't matter to me if it was just a few kids or 15 kids; that many people would have me picking a delivery date after Thanksgiving. Or buying plastic covers.

I think that might be a "First World" dilemma. That's what I get for Peaing while my son is going through my purse next to me. Jen

No brainer. Definitely wait on delivery so you can enjoy your Thanksgiving and not worry about potential damage.

Another vote for wait! (Because it would be a worse first world problem to report that your brand new Pottery Barn couch had a stain).

No way I would get them before. DH won’t even let me clean our carpets before we have a big event because he just KNOWS some kid is going to spill something on them (and sadly he’s usually right).

Imagine someone spilling cranberry sauce on them. If that image makes you want to cry and/or murder someone then you should absolutely wait to have those couches delivered.

Oh heavens, wait! I remember getting new sofas right before Thanksgiving and telling folks they were off limits to eating. What does my own mother do? Spill pie all over them, immediately staining them. And then she smeared it all around in an attempt to clean it. She thought I only meant no children eating on the sofas. Argh!

Learn from my great-aunt and delay delivery. She and my grandma always had this rivalry going. Aunt Avis just had to get her new couches delivered before Christmas to make sure Grandma Ardis would see them and it would send her in a tailspin to redecorate her living room. Aunt Avis’s couches were off white. M&Ms are not off white and they will melt in a sticky toddler’s hands and do a number on an off white couch. No one saw it happen because most people were downstairs in the rec room and away from those white couches, but we all heard the gasp when the chocolate and candy shell fingerprints were discovered. Save yourself that pain. For the record, Grandma got floral patterned couches and a mauve wing chair recliner shortly before the following summer.

Definitely wait. Who know what they will do? Spray Lysol on them or something. Probably not a big deal if they aren't leather.

Our cream colored couch has had more spills on it than I can count, between my own small children and adults, I'd hold off on delivery with that many visitors.

This thread is stressful, just reading through the responses. Now I don't feel so bad about cringing every time I have family over for an event. My nephews act like animals on my furniture and I have to tell them to sit, not do gymnastics on them. No wonder things don't last in their house and look terrible.
