Anybody an HVAC boss? WAIT, where is sharlag ??
4 months ago: A/C got inexplicably loud out of the blue. Sort of whistle-y and just generally could hear the air flow more. I literally ran around checking rooms, thinking a door in the house had blown open or something, it was that noisy. Had a very nice, competent A/C guy come out, they couldn't find anything wrong with it, and of course, they didn't know the "before" vs "after" level of noisiness to compare. The outside unit was a little low on freon, so they charged that, which made the air colder, but not quieter. I also did not care for the colder air and complained about it for 2 weeks to DH. He was not impressed.
2 weeks ago: Turned the heat (same unit - heat pump) on for the first time, and all of a sudden it was like there was a very small animal playing a very quiet bass drum in our attic. Since then, we've flipped back and forth between A/C and heat (thanks TX) a few times, and it makes the same noise on both A/C and heat. Basically, the air is blowing out of the vents at a very inconsistent speed. It is just faster/slower/medium/slow/fast all within a 15 second period. Air is plenty hot/cool. In addition to the inconsistent whooshing, the tiny bass drum sound is almost like a piece of sheet metal is flexing back and forth. DH went up and checked the duct work, couldn't see anything wrong. Filters are all clean and replaced regularly.
HVAC guy is coming out again in a few hours, but I am not going to accept "nothing is wrong" again. I think this is some sort of advancement of the previous issue. It is making me lose my mind.
Thoughts? I'm thinking something is going wrong with the blower - blower motor or circuit board going bad and causing lots of speed cycling, unbalanced blower, something?
Here's a video. It's kind of quiet, but I think you can get the idea of how it's cycling up and down rapidly. Can't really hear the miniature bass-drum feature though.
