DH is wondering what I want for Christmas and I was thinking it would be nice to update our plain white dishes. Right now we have a set of Correlle dishes and they obviously work fine, but I think I want something with a little more pizzazz. Here are my guidelines:
I want some color Need to be dishwasher safe Cannot chip or break easily Not too heavy Moderately priced -want to start with a 6-8 piece set, but would want to add to it over time.
I would like to start with dinner plates, dessert plates, soup bowls, maybe some coffee mugs, pasta bowls.
Thanks for any ideas, and links would be wonderful.

Would you consider Fiestaware? It can be moderately priced if you watch for a good sale.

I second Fiestaware. Pretty soon you will see 5 piece sets for about $20. Four piece sets too.

Fiestaware fits everything on your list except "not too heavy". I think the dishes are on the heavy side, but that's a fair tradeoff because they rarely chip/break.

Fiesta ware!!! I have had mine for 12 years and have ZERO chips and only 1 broken plate (when I dropped it on the granite counter). They do not chip, they aren’t “pottery” like most of the other colorful sets.

DH and DS are not easy on the dishes, and I am afraid I would start seeing chips within a few weeks. They are really durable. I have granite countertops and have yet to chip a piece. Kohl's usually has some great promotions so if you have a Kohl's card, keep any eye out for their 30% off codes combined with their Kohl's cash and sale promos. The only thing I'd caution about Kohl's is that I found quite a few flaws, from deep scratches, glazing bumps, cracks, etc. I'd only order from Kohl's if you have a store nearby to swap out the faulty sets.

I didn’t mention them because of “heavy.” If the weight is fine for you, they are exactly what you are looking for! We have Fiesta for our everyday dishes and Pfalzgraff for our holiday set. Fiesta do not chip. We have had our set for 20 years now with no chips.

Does Fiesta ware scratch? I have a white stoneware like set. We often put our dinner in bowls aND eat with a fork. Over the last 3 years we have got a lot of dark lines in them from the silverware going aganst them.

I also have some plain white Corelle dishes. I also have a set of fine dining that my Mom began giving to us for Christmas. She started when I was about 10 years old, and I got a few pieces every Christmas until they were completed. They were very expensive, and I love them, but don't use them much. I also have a set of Christmas dishes. I wanted to do just like you are doing and buy a better set of daily dishes. Every time I looked at colors, I loved them, but picturing food on them and it just didn't work. It looked either too busy or just wrong. My son kept telling me, the food is the focal point, not the dish, other than its shape.
I ended up with white square dishes that are thicker and very rustic looking. I really like them, but 99% of the time when I am grabbing a dish, I pull out a piece from the Corelle. When Mom was living with me, she wouldn't use the rustic dishes because they were too heavy for her to carry. As generic as the Correlle are, they are really my favorite to eat out of. I would not use the Corelle when entertaining though, so I am happy that I purchased the white rustic dishes. And since my son taught me some techniques for "plating" my food instead of just dishing it up when entertaining, the white truly works the best and makes the food look so much more appetizing. Especially if it is something that I can squirt a little squiggle accent of a sauce or something on the plate. I adore Fiestaware, and keep telling myself I should go ahead and get a few place settings, I can't really justify it because I know I prefer looking at them to actually eating off them.
Just something to think about.

Over the last 3 years we have got a lot of dark lines in them from the silverware going aganst them. Some of the colors can get silver utensil marks. But that is easily taken care of with Bar Keeper's Friend. My plum, cobalt, and shamrock have all had a few of those marks and they come right off.

Over the last 3 years we have got a lot of dark lines in them from the silverware going aganst them. Some colors show worse than others. I had the ivory and the flatware marks would not come out no matter what I did. I have about 6 other colors now and am not experiencing the same problem. I did avoid some of the darker colors because those tend to show actual scratches a bit more than the other colors.

I've had my Fiestaware for about 7 years now and I don't have a single chip, including the rims of the bowls. Countertops are quartz and marble. I think I've only broken one piece, and that was when I dropped it on the tile floor.

I'm getting ready to sell most of my dinnerware collections. I do have a big Christmas collection of Nikko Christmas dishes (service for 8... probably 12 but I'd have to check) + hostess pieces too. They're microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe and I think they're oven safe (I'd have to double check b/c I never actually put them in the oven).
I used to LOVE making all tablescapes for each occasion and season, but it's getting to be too much to drag out all of my seasonal changes. I'll post a pic if you're interested.

My only complaint with Fiestaware, is that I have a light color (the discontinued butter yellow from the 1990s) and it shows silverware scuffs badly. I tried a few suggested methods to get rid of them. The magic eraser didn't work, the cream of tartar didn't work, and the baking soda paste didn't work. I bought a can of Bar Keepers Friend and will try that next. From what I've read, if that won't get rid of the scuffs, they aren't coming off. I mean, my Fiestaware has been in daily use for going on 20 years now. But aside from all the scuffs, it's still in great condition and I'd like to be able to use it for company without feeling like I'm serving people on dirty dishes, KWIM?
I'm wanting some other, really colorful dishes. Probably with some yellow in them that I can mix in with my Fiestaware serving pieces. But it's not an immediate want, so I'm just looking right now.
Any other Fiestaware lovers dealt with silverware scuffs on light colors? How did you get it clean?

I waited tables in a restaurant that used Fiestaware. It is almost indestructible! It is very heavy though!

I fought against purchasing Fiesta for so long, to the point that I bought service for 12 in Pfaltzgraff Napoli. Within a year of buying that stuff, I had a huge stack of chipped dinnerware, and that was being super careful. Then I got Rachel Ray dinnerware. Once again, chips all over. Finally, I broke down and started collecting Fiesta. Two years now, not so careful, and not a single chip. They are not my favorite as far as looks, although I do think they are pretty, but I love the durability so much that I don't know if I would ever be willing to own another kind of dinnerware.
Also, Pfaltzgraff and Corelle both get wicked hot in the microwave, so that might be a consideration for you. Fiesta gets warm, but not like the other two.

DH and DS are not easy on the dishes, and I am afraid I would start seeing chips within a few weeks. I've had my Fiestaware for 5 years with 2 boys who are not easy on them. We have no chips. I did break a canister lid when I dropped it onto the granite countertop just right, but it broke into 3 nice pieces and DH was able to glue it back together.

I tell this as a dish whore who use to own about 20 sets of china, dishes, etc.
I had and used Fiestaware for years, and it is pretty resilient. I would purchase 3 place settings and all serving pieces of each new color. I loved pulling out the colors for the seasons, and mixing and matching, and tablescaping for seasons and events. And then it got to be annoying!! And food would not always look appealing on some colors. Some did scratch, but no ships.
I ended up selling it all (a dealer came and bought everything, for more than I ever paid!)
And have used the white dishes that I bought one year for Thanksgiving when I had 20 guests daily ever since. They were 4 pack place settings, and I bought 5 packs for $19.99 each at Macy's. They have an interesting edge detail, and I can accent it with whatever I want, and change my linens, and glasses for a different look. It's so easy to buy 8 accent plates to change out the look and all food looks good on white dishes. I have used these daily for 20 years, no chips, no breaks and not nearly as heavy as Fiesta Ware. It also takes up half the space in my cabinets than Fiesta Ware.
My other suggestion, if you really want color or pattern is check out Noritake. They make oven proof, microwaveable and dishwasher safe patterns. I still have, and occasionally use my set of "Royal Orchard'. You can toss that stuff like Frisbees, and they do not get damaged.

I recently purchased Fiestaware and was concerned about chipping as well. We have not had any trouble with it and the manufacturer provides a 5-year chip free warranty.
I second being careful about where you purchase it, however. I bought several sets from Macy's and had a broken or damaged piece that I wanted to exchange. They required me to return the entire set, rather than just the damaged piece.
I purchased several other sets from Bed Bath & Beyond. Not only did I not have to return the entire set for a problem with one piece, they didn't even make me return the damaged piece - just shipped me out a new one.
