12.7 million people 79.5% turnout 61.6% voted in favour of Marriage Equality (non-binding, but paves way for legalization) Love is love.

It'll be pretty hard for their government not to pass the law now.

Can I say that I am impressed at the voter turn out for a non binding vote.
Were there other things being voted on?

I am so happy with the result. Now the public has spoken, it needs to be passed in parliament.

I was so happy when I heard the news. I won't have to be embarrassed about my country's lack of progressiveness on this issue for much longer. I messaged my 20yo DD as soon as I heard and she was sitting in her car crying (with happiness), listening to Macklemore's Same Love.
However, I am still rather ashamed that it came to this - why couldn't we just DO IT instead of spending millions of a stupid non-binding postal vote? What an insult to all LGBTI people in this country.

I agree with Aussie Meg....disgusted that we had to waste money on a vote. Thankfully, commonsense and equality have triumphed in the end. Now you politicians...pass the bloody law and let’s get on with things!

I am really happy about this - though, I am surprised that Australia hasn't approved this before now.

Bad news for New Zealand, now we miss out on all the money from Aussies traveling here to get married!
Seriously though, very pleased Australia voted this way! 🤗

And it's about bloody time! I'm ashamed that it's taken this long and it's been done this way. How dare we be asked for our opinion on equal rights for non-heterosexuals - it should be just a given.

That's a great step forward. I'm shocked it wasn't before since it's been for so long here.

It'll be pretty hard for their government not to pass the law now. Let's hope so..,.basically this was just to see what the public opinion was, the vote itself is non binding. Just because the majority voted yes, does not mean any law has been passed and it is still not legal here. This vote just shows that most people would be happy to allow same sex couples to get married, but our political system still has to actually create and pass the laws to make this legal. Fortunately this time our Prime Minister seems to be on board...the last 3 have actively opposed it. So lets hope they get this into law quickly before the momentum dies down or the 'no' group can create more obstacles.
