I'll preface this by saying that 9 years ago I Nannied for a sweet woman who was a full-time Mary Kay lady who had a very, very busy career with it. She had the Mary Kay car and everything.............. Needless to say, she'd show me products and somehow I wound up buying a ton of her products. It wasn't worth the job for me!!!!!!!!! Fast forward to now. We have a neighbor who seems to be nice. She's close to my age and seems cool. DD29 takes care of her dogs and we met. She invited me in a few times and she's very friendly and forward. She moved here a few months ago and I think she wants friends close to her age. Fine. I have limited alone-time, and I don't get to spend time alone with DH with my 2 adult kids living here. It's nuts.........
She offered me to "do my face" with her Mary Kay stuff. I finally said yes. I made it CLEAR that this was just to get the colors and a list of things I might want. Fine. She hands me the foundation (it is perfect) and a foundation powder and tells me that we can work off the $$ slowly. I get home and she calls to tell me it would be $248 for everything I "need". NOOOOOO! I told her that I'm not working and I'm disabled. She said, "We take credit cards, debit cards..........." OMG. Awkward! I told her that when I say I have NOTHING, it means I honestly cannot afford a stick of gum! She says, "Well now you have my 2 pieces from my inventory that I used on you so you owe me $48." Nice..............
To create peace, I have to pay her (and put off paying my car insurance for a week or 2!) and learn to be even more blunt with people. I didn't want DD to lose her doggie duties with this woman. Everything was very friendly until she pushed this makeup on me.
How would you handle it??? I swear, I kept saying, "NOOO" every time she tried to hand me another tube of makeup! She made it seem like she knew my situation and she was giving it to me. Now I feel very weird about even seeing her. Ooh, and she won't take it back because she opened it and used it on me (or so she says).

"I'm sorry, but I didn't agree to buy anything."
"No."
"No, and please don't call me again."
Honestly, there are other people who will need your DD's services, and this woman will just move on to trying to sell her things next anyway. Then she'll get offended when your DD says no. Just make a clean cut now.

That is totally wrong. I used to be a "Mary Kay" lady and this goes beyond what is right. We had samples and all kinds of tools to be able to have someone try out the colors and skin care line without having to purchase one item. We were taught how to keep from contaminating our sample jars and tubes so we could do this. Also, there is a point where selling can become obnoxious and if she were truly interested in becoming a good sales woman she should learn to back off. As a MK lady, I gave away a lot of samples, I mean a LOT. But that is what it took and it was part of my business. While I was never able to "recruit" I was in the top ten sellers of the Houston area one year, so obviously, I was doing something right, and that meant NOT pushing.
One should not use their friends as a source of income. My friends got their make up from me at wholesale to make sure they knew that I was not out to use them. Your neighbor is trying to be a friend as well as make money off of you. You have to wonder if she wants your friendship or your money, or money she thinks you have and are lying about.

@bergdorfblonde, I'm a MK consultant. First, I'd like to apologize that your neighbor doesn't seem to understand your financial situation.
All MK products come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Even if you've used it. You can get your money back from her. Call her back and tell her that you're not happy and that you'd like your money back. She will not be out any money at all. She can/will/should make it right with you. Then she submits a form on line and is reimbursed from MK.
Again, I'm sorry that you're neighbor is not very understanding of your financial situation.

I was jumped on by a lady in Target once. She kept raving about my eyelashes (it was so awkward). When she pulled out her MK card I realized then she was just casing for customers. It was super weird.

I hope you return the products. I just did a MK face over with one of my friends (I caved because she is such a good person) and I bought a little bit. The very next day I took it to a hotel and accidentally left it there. I was so so SO sad. My MK lady came and replaced them free of charge. She did not have to do it (I didn't ask) but just to tell you that there are a lot of MK people who are not like your neighbor.
With friends like those, right?

I was going to say what Mary Kay Lady said........
Those types of products come with a money back guarantee in a certain amount of days. She can totally be reimbursed!! Don't let her bully you!
I do direct sales with a beauty products company and am always providing samples to my customers. Usually a weeks worth of product so that they have a chance to fall in love with the product. I don't want to sell anything that my customer won't love.....

THANK YOU all so very much!!!!!!! Makes so much sense. DD and I felt sick about this last night. I do understand our new friend's situation. She just lost a good banking job and she is now relying on the Mary Kay to get her through until she finds another job. She's been a great person to know thusfar. She helped me find a moving person and gave me her reference break. She seemed to be very giving and sweet. I thought she honestly was eager to just have me try the makeup, so I relunctantly went over there. When she HANDED me the foundation and powder and I tried giving it back, saying, "Noooooooooooooooo," she was still so insistent.
I didn't even pay for it. She handed it to me. She knew my $$ situation and what DH and I are medically going through, so this is pretty crappy to use your friends to sell the makeup. That's NOT the way to do business, and I'm so happy to read the RIGHT way to do Mary Kay business here. Kudos to you!!!
I'll bring the makeup back to her today, as hard as that will be, and say something about it not being right for me (which kills me because she knows I love it). I WAS allergic to all of the eye makeup she did on me though......... It's awkward, and I'm sure that DD won't be taking care of her dogs, and this woman is an extremely strong presence. She'll make things hard for us here. We're here for 7 years and this woman seems to know what's going on in this complex more than we do!! She gets the workers to do things that they've made very clear they're "not allowed" to do!!!!! (We've asked them a few times if they could take down or install our ceiling fans, but they can't--we were willing to pay back then. She's getting them do to hers for no $$. I guess she uses her pushy ways to get things done.......).
With friends like these, it's better to keep to yourself! Sad!
THANKS again for your wise words!

What a jerk. I'd go so far as to report her tactics to MK Corporate. @bergdorfblonde I think you should listen to @missjen and talk to corporate. This woman is coming about it all the wrong way and she is obnoxious. This is what I would do. If I get great customer service from anything I let management know. If I get bad customer service I let management know. I have done it in the smallest grocery store all the way to Louis Vuitton.

I've been fortunate enough to only met MK consultants that strictly follow the integrity guidelines set by your founder. It is darn near impossible to buy from anyone but your normal MK consultant. Only after I explain that my regular consultant only orders 2-3 times a year am I able to place an order with someone else.

She does lose the sale. She should have used samples on her anyway or her "kit" stuff in a sanitary way. Not open a new product then force the customer to buy a product she tried. MK is taught how to ask questions that lead them not to get a no. For example you don't ask are you available Tuesday? You say would Tuesday or Wednesday be better for you? But what she did to you is horrible, when you said you have no money and explained you situation. Not your problem is she needs the money, you have your own problems. I hope you get the products returned.

I'm not sure of where you live, but you can order products that you need through a consultant's web site. (Do you live in the United States? As a consultant I am able to sell only to people who live in the US or US territories.) My web site is www.marykay.com/sneff2When you order through a consultant's web site the products are shipped directly from the company. If you're needing samples I have almost every sample Mary Kay makes and would be happy to help you.

Actually, the 100% satisfaction guarantee from Mary Kay doesn't have a time limit on it. It doesn't matter if you bought something 50 years ago and want to return it. It can still be returned.

*hijack* Mary Kay Lady I have recently developed some very dry flaky patches of skin on my face. What product can I add to my current regimen to get rid of them. I use Timewise 3-1 cleanser and moisturizer for normal to dry skin. I use Clearproof toner once per day because I still get acne at my age (48). I've stopped using the toner due to the dryness but now I have acne *end hijack*

I just had someone local to me get mad at me for not buying a hand cream from her (other MLM) and she told me "But you LOVED it..." Yeah well I don't love it now so I don't want it. I hear you, @bergdorfblonde. I also didn't want to see the other "amazing products" that she wanted to demo to me.
I feel you. I do.

Thank you all for your advice and for sharing your stories. DH and I have discussed how to handle this, and he's is 100% in agreement with facing this head on and making it clear that I didn't want or ask for the products to begin with, and hand them back in and end this............ however, keep in mind that I didn't even PAY for the products yet!!!!!! She had me come over under the guise of just trying the new colors, so I didn't even have my wallet (thankfully). Still, she pushed the products on me and said, "Don't worry". Weird........ Then she called me and I had a heart to heart about our financial situation and make it CLEAR that I cannot afford any payment plan, etc. I don't even need or want makeup right now. I'm going to be having major surgery soon and can't even wear makeup, so why would I invest $$ in it? ?? She still didn't take "no" for an answer, and then said that little fact that she opened those packages for me and they're now mine and I "owe her". She got more and more insistent on being paid the $48 NOW, which I don't have. It would have to come out of my car loan $$ and I don't know how I'd make up for it, but I might do it!! Here's why: This woman has only lived here in our complex for almost a year. She knows the business of EVERYONE here and they all seem to know her. Since we're planning on living here for another year, I really don't want to cross her. I'd rather pay it, learn to keep more of a distance between us and be MUCH more firm with anything resembling sales or finance. If I suggest giving the makeup back, I know how angry she'll get, and, yes, I know this is not the Mary Kay norm. I have had an extremely pushy Mary Kay friend in NJ, but that was her career and she was good at it. This woman here had a fulltime job in finance and just got fired, so she's doing Mary Kay as a backup until she could find another job. I understand her stress, but, yeesh, don't target a disabled person who's barely getting by + I have my own medical issues, my husband's cancer to contend with and 2 adult children (1 disabled but not declared disabled yet here) who I'm trying my best at getting them stable enough to move out........... So... I might just take the stupid $$ out of my car $ and try to figure it all out, just to keep peace in my little community here. I know it's the pu$$y way out.

P.S.: I'm just now thinking that it was strange that this woman also told me to bring over my Social Security paperwork and Medicare paperwork and she'd help me to see if there's more gov't aid here in FL. I don't really know her credentials in her Finance job she supposedly had, but I'm glad that I didn't give her my personal information. I'm just now wondering if she's snookering other people for a living. She did tell me that she's "helping" 2 elderly women here in the complex who can't figure out their Medicare. Hmm...........
