I know a lot of people watch Hallmark romances, especially while crafting, so I thought I would share this silly Christmas romance bingo game I put together for family and friends. It's pretty fun. I just watched "12 Gifts of Christmas" while I was working on something and I so wished I had a few cards out because I swear I would have gotten bingo no problem. People who hate Hallmark might even tolerate watching if they get to play bingo. My 7yo nephew played for a while. The download is here: google drive
Hopefully all of the tropes are easily understandable, although they can be subjective (weirdly aggressive carol singers, for example, although you'll know they're weirdly aggressive when you see them in a couple of movies - The Mistletoe Promise definitely has the most aggressive carolers ever). If in doubt, give yourself the square. There are no HHRB police. Let me know how it goes. I'd love to know which movie gets the most squares. Each time I watch I think of a bunch more tropes that would be good to add for next year -- feel free to suggest your favs. I have a list going, and the cards are easy to make online (the website is in the filename if you want to make your own versions).

I saw this the other day and my daughter didn’t find this as humorous as i found it.

That is so cute. And accurate. The first theme that popped into my mind was widower finds love again, but I see they've got that covered with "loss of a loved one" (covers not only spouse, but also father, mother, etc).
I'm kinda bummed I don't have access to the Hallmark channel on tv. You'd think between Hulu, Amazon Prime, Roku, Netflix and Sling I'd have it, but no. It might be available at the next level up on Sling, but I'm already paying out the wazoo for all this plus cable internet.

What a fun idea! Thank you!
My best friend and I do our own girls weekend for scrapbooking and one of the best parts is watching lifetime movies. I think we will have to do this. I am going to forward her this because I know she watches the Hallmark movies with her daughters.

I can only stomach a few Hallmark movies per Christmas season (and nobody watches them with me) so the bingo cards might be a bit too much for me. But my oh my, did I giggle reading your analysis of the tropes!
Would you be cool with me compiling a list of all applicable to my favourite Hallmark Christmas movie for my DD?

OMG - I watched this movie the other day and the whole time SO and i were like those carolers are so freaking rude!!! It was so blatantly unrealistic, it drove me nuts. As if anyone would tolerate people getting in their faces while they were eating lunch in the food court... I'd probably tell them to f-off on my way to complain to mall management... but then Hallmark isn't very good at portraying people doing jobs in an accurate or reasonable way (I need a square for "doing something completely unethical that would totally get you fired/sued in the real world" like taking a person's artwork without their permission and altering it to use in an advertising campaign, as in the 12 Gifts of Christmas).

I hear you with the cable thing - I'm sick of having to subscribe to multiple services just to get the few shows I love. And Hallmark has their own subscription channel now... ($60 a year for all 3 channels and handpicked "classic" movies) We were very lucky to find Hallmark free to air with our limited basic cable package. It was hidden amongst the shopping and religious channels after the end of the local channels. Netflix has a few similar - My Christmas Prince just released, which looks like a basic falling for royalty movie, and there's an appalling Beauty and the Beast retelling with one of the Duff sisters. That has the bonus of one of the Hallmark guys running around without a shirt on, which doesn't actually happen on Hallmark proper. He's also a widower finding love again.

I saw something else like that recently - along the lines of "two people who have a thing for each other, trapped in a cabin by a snow storm... and there's only one bed... OMG, what will happen?!" (Of course, on Hallmark there are always two beds, two rooms left at the inn, or a giant house they both inherited/bought that can be divided down the middle...)

Absolutely. I can send you my master list if you like. What's your favorite? Thank you! Don't worry: I'll just copy + paste straight from the PDF. All-time fave is 2013's Snow Bride. Even my SO sits down and watches it with me. Fave from last year's bunch was Mistletoe Promise... #aggressivecarollers Currently weeding through the 2017 movies to find a good one!

I think I've seen (most of?) that one. Fake dating is my fav trope. I like the one with Danica McKellar (Wonder Years girl) where she is the governess for the princess, falls for the widower king. One of the many stupid faux European royalty movies. "You had me at sewing kit" The only problem is that she is terrible at on screen kisses. I can tolerate chaste, but she's positively wooden!

I think Danica McKellar is absolutely beautiful, but she has one emotional expression - it's a mix of concern/confusion/worry. Now I'll have to watch how she kisses. I must pay closer attention!

LOL!! were each of these bingo cards made for individual movies?? (from your 'see which movie gets the most' comment).
Either way, I'll definitely be playing some bingo just on my own, cause I think it will be fun.
And I actually laughed out loud when I read the 'Folger's product placement' square... I saw that in one movie (a Lacey Chaubert movie where she's a widow / fashion designer, I think?) and they stayed on that coffee can so long that I thought my television had frozen up, or something!!

LOL we were watching Jeopardy Recently after seeing a rash of those kind of movies and DH, after getting the question wrong, exasperatedly blurted "You're killing me with your Hallmark Movies and all their fake countries!!"

Me and my daughter made one before I saw this on the internet. We are going to do eggnog shots (minus the alcohol).
ETA: My reading comprehension is off! We made a list, didn't make bingo. Maybe we'll do this instead.

I think Danica McKellar is absolutely beautiful, but she has one emotional expression - it's a mix of concern/confusion/worry. So true. She is so beautiful but she doesn't have a huge repertoire of emotional reactions. I'm not sure if that's why she's on so many Hallmark movies, or if the Hallmark direction causes the lack of range. I love her in both/all of her movies with Paul Greene and every so often there's something approaching chemistry if you look really hard, but then the kisses ruin it all... I guess it must be hard to make sure that there is no pelvic contact during the big moment, but the girl needs to relax a little bit. Someone's parents are dead All the parents are dead And the almost mythical, No One's Parents are Dead haha! Just like in fairytales, dead parents are a key source of (in this case, very low level) tension. It's especially noticeable when there's a wedding. We ended up going with "loss of a loved one" which is perhaps a bit too general. The revised version may have separate categories for finding love again after being widowed and someone's parents are dead. We are going to do eggnog shots (minus the alcohol). ETA: My reading comprehension is off! We made a list, didn't make bingo. Maybe we'll do this instead. Whatever works! I started this as a list but my SIL wanted it to be a little more formal. It would make an excellent drinking game, regardless.

I saw that in one movie (a Lacey Chaubert movie where she's a widow / fashion designer, I think?) and they stayed on that coffee can so long that I thought my television had frozen up, or something!! I just made a big list and the website sorted them randomly into bingo cards for me, with the free square for a happy ending (but not a "happy ending" because Hallmark doesn't go for that ;P). It's a pretty cool website - you can bingo almost anything. Some of my friends wanted to see if they could get all the squares from one movie - doubtful - but I figured you could also keep watching until you had everything on the card checked off and see how many movies it took. I'm totally playing by myself. It can be a little embarrassing when you start screaming "romantic snow falling! uh, wait, yes, falling on top of each other! wait for it, wait for it - yes... intense moment... interrupted mistletoe kiss by weirdly aggressive carolers!!! YSE! 5 squares in one scene!" and no one knows why you've suddenly gone crazy, but it does make the movies go down a lot easier. Not that I've ever done that or anything... We're going to play at Christmas with the whole family and I think it's going to be epic. The Folger's product placement is the most blatant I've ever seen. I'm glad they're not a sponsor any more, even if it does lose us a square on the newer movies. I know the exact scene you're talking about and it's just ridiculous (although that movie is one I love to hate - it's the awful Mariah Carey vehicle, isn't it? She's such a blatant mean girl, but the darn song the kid sings at the end is so catchy - argh! I got it stuck in my head again!)

- it's the awful Mariah Carey vehicle, isn't it? Yes!!! And I thought the movie was okay, but did NOT like the song / dance number at the end- it was way too over-produced for a middle-school performance to be believable, and I turned it off during that scene. (...I know, I know- like ANY of it is supposed to be believable, lol!! but it turned me off.)

(...I know, I know- like ANY of it is supposed to be believable, lol!! but it turned me off.) I know, I know... and the first couple of times I watched it I had the same reaction... but then it got under my skin and I can't help but enjoy it now. The bit that gets me is when Mariah is all bitchy about "our new single mother" over and over and Lacey just smiles and takes it. Mean girls are much less blatant in real life, and much harder to counter. Mariah's mean girl is so obvious it would make anybody squirm, and be easy to call her on (even for a conflict-phobe like myself). For some reason that bothered me more than the ridiculous middle school talent show. Also, I laugh every time I see Lacey wrap a tape measure around an already made garment and pretend that she's somehow altering the fit. Hallmark is very bad at portraying jobs.

Lolol I can't read them (on my phone, too small, so lazy) so I sent them to my printer to look at. What a great idea, DS and I like to watch these together occasionally for a good snicker. He'll enjoy this!
