DS got what we assume is a wasp sting Tuesday morning (killed one in the kitchen later that morning) Was red and a little swollen for a bit then seemed to ease up. Then all of a sudden last night started getting g swollen again, itchy and down right painful. gave him benadryl, put itch cream on it, even tried the baking soda paste thing. Not much relief. This am same thing. Weird right? Told him to text me at lunch and if no better will call Dr for an after school appt.

Is the stinger still in it?

We don't think so. DH looked last night and it didn't appear to be.

Try pouring Listerine on it. I used it once right after getting stung and an hour later you couldn't even tell where I was stung. My grand kids have used it also and it's worked like a charm. I'm not sure how well it will work if it's been so long, but worth a try. Any flavor works.

Don't wasp stings usually hurt? Every time I have been bitten, there was NO question about it. (funny aside: last time I was bitten was after coming inside and apparently one had landed on my clothing and hitchhiked his way inside. I sat down and that damn thing stung me on my ass. Hurt like you would not believe. And, really, who gets stung on their ass by a wasp? That is some kind of special talent there. ) Maybe it wasn't a wasp sting? Maybe something else, mosquito? Spider?

Definitely not mosquito. My 2nd thought was spider. He was in the kitchen chair and reached back to stretch grabbing the top of chair and yelled out.

Stinger isn't there because wasps don't die after stinging. Sometimes they sting multiple times. This happened to me this summer. I iced the site and that relieved the swelling and the itching. It took a good two weeks to go away.

Thanks whopea. We've done lots of ice and benadryl. Just odd that it seems to be getting worse instead of better.

Sounds like he is developing an allergy like I have. Each sting gets worse. It doesn't seem so bad at first then I will swell up at the site at least twice normal size with pain and itching that would wake the dead. Benadryl doesn't touch it.
I now have an epipen and I was told by the allergist to use Zyrtec instead of Benadryl because it will last longer and is not sedating. You can also take 2 where the dosage says one pill. I also have the strongest steroid cream on the market which will help in reducing the swelling. The epi pen is a last resort because he said I am on my way to needing it.
Take him the allergist asap so they can see the site. Before it clears up.

I got him an appt for after school. He had been stung years ago and wound up in the ER because it swelled his hand like 3 X it's size. But that was like an instant reaction. This is now 3 days later.

Does it look infected? The stinger leaves an opening that could have been touched with something on his hands. Wasp stings are horrid and hurt way more than bee stings. Bees leave their stinger behind, wasps don't. Let us know how he is after the Dr. sees him.

My son was stung between the eyes by a wasp when he was about 8. He was with a friend for a sleepover when it happened and the mother kept an eye on him and gave him Benedryl. The next day was Sunday and he came up to me at church and I almost didn't recognize my own son, his face was so swollen. He looked like elephant man. I couldn't believe she didn't call me. He's 23 now but anytime someone mentions wasps he runs live the devil is chasing him! I hope your son is ok.

Well the dr said it will run its course, continue with benadryl and ice and gave an rx for prednisone.

I got stung by a bee that was in a pair of folded pants I threw on. Got me right above the funzone.

Go to the ER or Urgent Care a.s.a.p.! DS got stung by something, we weren't sure what. It was swollen, and looked like he might have an allergic reaction.
They told us that if we had not brought him in, he might have died in his sleep during the night! The shot they gave him hurt like crazy, but I would have been devastated if we had not taken him in, and he had died in his sleep because of our hesitation to take him to Urgent Care.

That happened to a coworker of mine. She got stung on Monday, swelled a little, was a little red. Seemed to be improving. Tuesday night it started to hurt, got red, and swelled up a LOT. The urgent care meds said that's common with a wasp sting.

I am allergic to stinging insects like bees and fire ants. Each time is different. Sometimes, the pain is instant, sometimes, the initial pain creeps up on me. I don't think the venom is the same each time? IDK. Anyway, my reactions grow for 3 days. If I stop taking benadryl during that time, the reaction will pick up right where it left off. If he's already had a reaction before, there's your answer.

My friend had a bee sting last spring. It was right above her eye. Doctor told her to give it ten days before she should be worried about the swelling. It did not look right. She went in three days later and it was worse. She had a bad infection. She got lots of meds for it. You just never know.

Our neighbor was recently stung eight times. A couple days later, the stings were infected. Antibiotics seemed to help. Hope things get better soon!

I would be concerned about cellulitis. If it's still not better I'd take him to the doctor.
