I've picked up on this about a year ago. I'm hearing newscasters, journalists and guests all use the same verbiage lately! They begin a sentence with, "So......" or "Look......". It's so very frustrating!

So, my husband and I had a conversation about this the other day! We agreed it's a tad irritating as is ending a sentence with so . . . . and leaving it hanging.

Sometime in the last 5-6 years, my DH started doing this. It's incredibly annoying but I don't want to pick on him about it because it seems bitchy. So...I still haven't said anything...but so...and...

I notice and fixate on this type of stuff.
Another speech filler that irritates me is "I mean...."
I start counting how many times a person does it. It's not satisfying at all. I don't recommend it.

Listen for "sort of" also. I can't stop noticing it.

My pet peeve is when people start a sentence with , "Me and so and so..."

I can’t really get excited about it. My pet peeves are improper grammar and misspelling. But I have noticed it.

I actually am more irritated by actually how often people actually overuse the word actually. Ack. There are other adverbs out there, people.

Look, so, well you know, we all have little quirks when we're talking. Well, I mean, I tend to start a lot of sentences with well, and I mean that's actually, well, like really annoying. So...

I must not pay enough attention to anything.
In my defense the divorce has had me very distracted. So... I’ll get right on that and get back to you 😉

I don’t think starting a sentence with so is new. I know I have done it for a long time. In fact, I believe I was mocked for starting a thread with “So...” on the old board. Now I try to make a conscious effort not to begin my threads that way. Because of the aforementioned mocking.

I hadn't noticed that, but I'll be listening for it now. I've noticed how "tribal" seems to be the new catch word on every news station.

I use so a lot. I try to be conscious of it though and I tend to rewrite things when I notice that I've used it too much.
I have noticed people on news shows saying and I've chalked it up to the "dumbing down" they try to do with their presentation.

Also possible that they don't always choose the most articulate people with the broadest vocabulary to report the news on tv. It's about being physically attractive IMHO.

This is becoming epidemic. I get it when you make a statement and then try to clarify or re-word with "I mean..." But I'm noticing that a lot of young people, when interviewed, START OFF their answer with "I mean..." Odd.

Normally this stuff doesn't bother me but I had a conference call a few weeks ago with a government reporting agency and damn if that woman didn't say uh or um like 12,000 times! It was so distracting I could barely focus.

Using "myself" in place of "me" drives me batty. I think people think "myself" is the more educated sounding option, but IT MAKES NO SENSE! "Me" is a perfectly acceptable and proper word.

I am beginning to despise local reporters.
They are so crunched for time that they cut out details.
In yakima, a man was shot in the supermarket. Where is the supermarket on a person? The best sentence? The car left the road , rolled over the bank and killed the two occupants. Wth ? A car doesn't drive itself. You roll down an embankment, not over a bank. .
I hate local news.

I've noticed it is used a lot in interviews since I've started listening to NPR. That and starting with "Sure...-whatever the answer is-" when asked a question. I mentioned it to DH, he thinks it's because they want the reporting to sound more conversational, to draw the listener in. I think it makes the reporters sound very young. Maybe they are?

They all sound about 22 years old on NPR. I hate the sloppy way they speak. And they need to get off my lawn. The "Look..." thing has been happening on TV news for four or five years at least. It's like nails on chalkboard to me. I call it "pundit-speak."

Using "myself" in place of "me" drives me batty. I think people think "myself" is the more educated sounding option, but IT MAKES NO SENSE! "Me" is a perfectly acceptable and proper word. I wish I could have liked this many, many times! TV presenters who say "Join myself and other presenter" has my spine tensing up. Further up I was agreeing that I don't like So at the start of speech but it can be fine, particularly if the person saying it is the first in the conversation and is sort of laying their cards on the table. What I don't like is tv reporting where interviewees use So at the start of every response. Someone mentioned that maybe people are young. I think that's part of it and so much texting is done that younger people are not getting the hang of starting or ending a conversation. I get the feeling it's almost like a verbal emoji. Of course, my speech and writings are always perfectly formed.

Ours all put an "a" sound at the end of a word or sentence. Some even do it mid word. Really annoying.

Add to the irritations---
The person being interviewed will say, "That's a good question."
Notice how very many times that happens! UGH
