I related that my DS is no fan of Amtrak because of there constant delays and he rides the train home from boarding school every two weeks.
Well, today is his day/night to come home and he is beyond unhappy. Actually, one of his posts was: "Amtrak: "Because we don't care about you, you paid the money, so f**** you"."
I have tried to tell him that for once, it is not all Amtrak's fault.
The weather front that came through the deep South has been causing all kinds of delays. They usually board the train at 4 and arrive here at 10. 6 hours to go just a bit over 250 miles.
Tonight they didn't get to board the train until after 6, then there has been delay after delay. Besides the weather, it got stuck behind another train and so it was stopped for a while.
DS reported about a half hour ago that they have been delayed AGAIN because a car hit the train. He thought the person was probably killed, but one of his friends reported seeing them load someone in an ambulance.
The website keeps updating its ETA. Now it looks like it will be after midnight when they get in. DS us hugely disappointed because he and his friends were going to see Rocky Horror when they got in tonight. One of the group hasn't seen it, so they were all looking forward to it. DH was going along as the designated adult, LOL.
However, I think his main frustration tonight is he is tired from working hard at school, and that on top of his disappointment with missing the movie, and knowing the delay eats into his limited time home (He usually gets about 37 hours here before he has to go back).
I have a feeling that after the new year I am going to be making a 500 mile drive every two weeks. Thanks a lot, Amtrak!
I don't know how the Northeast peas deal with Amtrak as a mode of transportation, especially in winter.

That was me posting last weekend. Wouldn't you know we had 2 delays in the way home due to freight traffic??
I would be frustrated to if I was your son. I'd also give up on the tdain.
Hope he gets home safe!

Can they take a bus? If not, maybe you and the other parents can set up a carpool system.
I used to be a frequent Amtrak passenger. The final straw was almost two years ago when I was taking the train to visit my father. Due to snow, the train got delayed and since Amtrak doesn't own the rails it uses, we sat on the train FOUR hours waiting for clearance to proceed. In my destination city. As my father was in the hospital dying. Fortunately, he didn't die until the following day. (My father wasn't taken to the hospital until after I boarded the train so other modes of transportation weren't an option.) After that experience I looked into taking the bus. Upsides are that the bus cheaper, on time more frequently than the train and on busy days they add buses to accommodate increased ridership. The downsides are less room, no tray table (for laptops, books, food, etc), no dining car (you can only get food if they have a rest stop at a place with food) and only one bathroom on the bus. All the bus rides haven't been uneventful, but overall it's worked great for me. I'm 5-6 hours from my usual destination (NYC to/from Syracuse) and several times have taken the bus NYC to/from Virginia Beach without issue. That said, if I had to travel when a big storm was predicted I'd likely spring for the train as, IMO, there is less chance of an accident and there is food and multiple bathrooms on the train.
