I was running errands this morning and was in an area that was new to me. I passed by a Tuesday Morning store and though I would swing in for a quick look around on my way back home. Ha, quick look around. I must have been in that store for over 2 hours! They had a lot of paper crafting things and a whole aisle of pet stuff. I had my dog with me, and typically when choosing a stuffed toy for him, I hold it up for him to look at, and if he looks away, I know not to buy it. He showed a lot of interest in a little rooster that was extremely sturdy and well made, so I bought that one for him.
As I was about to leave the aisle, I noticed some cat toys. I found a battery-operated stuffed lady bug that is just adorable. When you turn it on, it just buzzes itself across the floor on little brushes that are on the under side. I have given the cats little hard plastic battery toys similar to this, and they love them, but I've never seen a stuffed one like this. And for only $2.99, why not?
We hit the dog park after that and I let him run and run and run with the other dogs to tire him out. I figured he would be sacked out all evening. Well, he did immediately curl up and go to sleep in the new dog bed I found at Tuesday Morning for him. I continued to unpack the bags and put things away and when it came to the lady bug toy, he seemed to sense it was a toy and came into the kitchen to supervise. How can they sleep through unpacking of everything else, but become immediately alert when I open a pet toy or package of treats? He was in the family room about 20 feet away from where I was. How do they know?
I turned it on and set it on the floor. OMG, the dog went nuts! He was charging at it, but the vibration freaked him out a bit and must have tickled him or just plain felt weird, because he wouldn't pick it up. He just ran around it, barking at it and doing that funny little jump thing that dogs do with their front feet coming off the ground, but the back end staying still. Then he would run out of the room, and back in again, lifting his front feet up like a Clydesdale horse, then as soon as he got close, he would jump back as if it lunged at him.
He kept charging it and retreating again, barking the entire time. I picked it up and turned it off, and he jumped up and pulled it out of my hand and ran off with it. He was running as if his tail was on fire, around from the kitchen to the dining room, through to the living room, then back under the stairs and into the family room, and into the kitchen again, sliding on the turns.
Then he ran into the family room, jumped up on the couch and started pawing at the comforter that I had on there, pulling it back and dropped the bug onto the couch. Then used his nose to shove the comforter back over top of it again. Once he had it well buried, he looked so pleased with himself and jumped back off the couch. I waited for him to be distracted in the other room, then reached under the comforter and turned it on again and really quickly walked away from it.
A few minutes later he walked back into the kitchen and his body language immediately changed when he heard the buzzing noise again. He was so amped up over this thing, and I was laughing until I had tears running down my face. It was like he was afraid of it, yet needed to "kill" it to protect us. Yet he didn't want to pick it up, and became very anxious if I did. I have truly never seen him so animated over any toy before.
I guess this has now become a dog toy instead of a cat toy. And now I wish I had looked to see if they had any other styles of stuffed battery toys. Fortunately, my cats are easily entertained with a string, a feather, or the plastic piece that comes off of the cap on a milk container. They won't miss the ladybug. Oh, and they adore paper. Not just any paper, they prefer MY paper. It seems it is only appealing to sprawl out on my bills, any paperwork I am trying to read, and of course, my good scrapbooking papers.
If you have a Tuesday Morning store near you, I highly recommend that you check the pet aisle for these battery operated cat toys. Obviously since they were made for cats, you can't leave a dog alone with it due to the danger of them chewing and swallowing part of it. I hope your dog finds it as entertaining and confusing as mine did.
