I have my mom's old set of Thistleware dishes in boxes in the basement, and thought I'd use them rather than let them sit down there. They say 'stoneware' on them, but I can't figure out whether it is dishwasher safe (or microwave safe). Apparently the company that made them (Buchan in Scotland) either went out of business or discontinued the line a long time ago. Does anyone else have these? I have three boxes of it, and my mom doesn't cook or have room for it in her little apartment. I'm not going to bother if they have to be handwashed, LOL. They're really pretty:

They are gorgeous! Looked them up on Replacements and your dinner plate is $80 just for a single plate. The only way to know for sure if they are dishwasher-safe or microwave-safe is to put a single piece in (like a saucer or something trivial) and see if it's OK at the end. Or maybe ask the folks at Replacements Ltd: I'm sure they can't guarantee it but they probably know whether or not it's OK to nuke and dishwash them.

Maybe I should rethink the everyday use and leave them in the boxes. I'm a clutz and no doubt I'd be breaking some. Replacements Ltd is a great idea. I'd forgotten about them. Thank you.

Use them and enjoy them. They do no good in boxes in the basement!

True that they’ve been sitting in boxes for years now. I’ll have a little chat with my mom and see what she says. Meanwhile I emailed replacements Ltd to see if they are ok in the dishwasher.

this pattern was highly collectable and there is still a facebook group www.facebook.com/BuchanThistle/You may want to post on it to get some actual customer experience with use in the microwave or dishwasher.

Use them if you absolutely love them or you could sell them and buy something you really like .

I have an old stoneware set I still use occasionally. I put it in the dishwasher but I do not put it in the microwave - a lot of stoneware contains reasonable amounts of trace metals (found in the clay it was made with) and so tends to attract heat and get very hot in the microwave. It's not the best kind of plate to heat things on.

They are very pretty. I say enjoy using them. They aren't doing anyone any good by hiding in a box.
