12/29/17 UPDATE #2 It just arrived. I will be playing this weekend. I will let you know how it goes. *************************************************************** 12/21/17 UPDATE!! I did it! I bought one. Someone just gave me a $100 Amazon gift card so I took that, along with a holiday bonus I received, to be a sign that I should buy one Thank you for everyone's input. *************************************************************** Original Post: I fell down the YouTube rabbit hole, watching crafting videos, and now I want a Scan & Cut! I love stamps with matching dies and it looks like this would eliminate the need for the dies PLUS I will be able to cut out all my "old" stamps. Do you have one? Which version? Do you love it? I have the original Cricut Expression and use it a lot, mainly for titles. I have spotty wifi in my scraproom, so I don't want anything that has to connect to the internet. So what do you think? I don't think I will be able to pull this off for Christmas but, if I save, I think I could do it in the spring.

Have you done a search for other threads about this? I know we discussed it a few times not that long ago, and there has been a lot of info about it.

Not having to buy matching dies would be a huge bonus, making the Scan N Cut a necessary purchase IMO.
I have the Silhouette Cameo - I'm going to learn how to scan and cut on that during the Christmas holidays. I think it's a great way to cut down on buying dies.

I just got the CM350, and I absolutely love it. I had known about it for a long time and just wrote it off because I have a Cameo, and you can cut out stamps using the PixScan mat. I just kept finding myself buying dies, though, because when I want to quickly cut out a stamp and get it done, I really don't want to get my Cameo and laptop out. I saw gale w say she had one, and then I really had to go look at it seriously. I decided to get the CM350 because it has color recognition, so if you stamp a yellow balloon with no black line, it can recognize and cut out the yellow balloon, where the earlier models can't.
And I really do love it. It's very well made. It has a no line cut that is great for cutting out masks. It cuts really fine details so much better than I ever dreamed. I was also afraid the touch menus would be complicated or hard to follow, and they are as obvious as using an iphone and very easy to navigate. The speed amazes me, and lately when I'm bored or just feeling completely uninspired, I just go stamp random stamps and cut them out to watch it do it's thing. I know I'm easily amused, but it really is an amazing little beast. I can stamp a few images, scan and run them through in less time than I could even get out my Big Shot or set up my Cameo. I also love it because a lot of times companies don't make dies for everything on their stamps sheets. They don't do words, they often don't do the tiny little shapes, and if you want to reverse your stamp image, it's harder to line up on a manual cutter. And if I want to do a shaker with little tiny stamps, I can stamp a bunch and cut out enough for a whole card in under 5 minutes. I also love that I can stamp a scene and then cut out the scene all at once when I don't want as many layers.
In terms of cost, I figured after passing on about a dozen sets of coordinating dies, I've more than paid for it.
Good luck with your decision!

This is great information. I love that the peas are such good enablers! So is that the main difference between the 250 and the 350? Color recognition? I thought the 250 also did that. Off to do some searching...

lemondropI should have said no-border, not no line for cutting out masks, but I hope you got what I meant. It was a massive "Doh" moment 2 or 3 days after I got it when I realized exactly how much I'd really use no borders because of masking. Since I'm fairly new to it myself and didn't evolve with it like I did the Cameo, I don't know the different models well. On their website they advertise the color recognition as a new feature in the 350, and honestly I figured that it was the newer model, within what I could afford, and I liked the color scheme, so I went for it. I didn't deeply research earlier models because I figured if it was like my Cameo, I'd have it for years and years and I may as well buy the most current model. The Scan n Cut is price-locked by Brother, meaning retailers are limited in their ability to discount the machine. They had a sale where it was marked down until the 9th, I think, and it's back up to it's normal price point. Amazon still has it (Cm350) $25 off at $275. I don't know how often they go on sale, I just lucked out and when I was really looking at it, they were on sale, so it helped push me over. All that said, if I had ever seen it work in person, I would have easily paid full price. I think it's one of the best crafting purchases I've ever made and I have no regrets so far.

I had some money stashed but DS went to the dentist yesterday and needs to have a couple of fillings. I still love my Cricut Expression for many things but the ability to cut out like this is very tempting. However, I don't need the features of the 650. Thank you again for your input.

Does the Scan & Cut actually cut out the middles of stamped images? Meaning the dead space that is sometimes in stamped images...Im probably not describing it well.

Does the Scan & Cut actually cut out the middles of stamped images? Meaning the dead space that is sometimes in stamped images...Im probably not describing it well. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P-mEy4omKcTry watching that. People refer to it as an "inside out cut", and yes it's supposed to be able to. You'll notice in her video she's cutting out the entire outline of the image, so it removes all (white) negative space. This is still somewhat different from cutting out a detailed stamp where you don't want every tiny line cut out, but only the larger pieces of negative space. (Negative space may not be the best word, but I'm tired, so if you have a better word, lmk and I'll edit!) I put an example of they type of image I mean below. We all have a pretty clear expectation of what the inside and outside of that stamp would be. I'm speculating here because I haven't done it yet, and basing this on how I've seen it behave so far. If you look at the wreath, if you want to cut it out with a small border, because all the lines are close together, the inside out cut should leave a small outside border and then cut the small "heart" inside section out, leaving the same small border inside. When it places the border around complex lines, the machine is really good about recognizing how the lines would overlap/intersect, so it cuts the border that makes sense. However--if you wanted to cut this inside and out with NO border, I would suspect it would be easiest to color the image in first and let the color recognition mode pick up the overall blocks of color, versus trying to cut out every single tiny black line. I don't know exactly what the software limitations are there, but I suspect that's where things get interesting. (If anyone knows, please post and save me some experimenting!)

I don’t think that video is going to do them any favors. That is a lot of clicking and fussing compared to their other machine. Granted the price is much better, but if I were going to invest in a new machine I would get the one with the scanner. This one seems a downgrade from the Cameo.

I have one of the first Brother Scan N cuts, and I have to say, I am thrilled with mine. I wanted it to cut out stamped images, and it does that. I don't do anything else with it, maybe one day I'll figure something else out, but for me, it does exactly what I bought it to do. Happy camper!

I saw that. They aren't replacing the Scan n Cut, though, are they? I took that as an alternative type of machine, like Cricut and their cake machine and the new Maker. The whole value of the machine is in the scanner to me.

I have spotty wifi in my scraproom, so I don't want anything that has to connect to the internet. If/when you get your Scan n Cut, if you want to do designing in their software to cut titles or draw fancy shapes on the computer or something like that, you don't need to use wifi. In fact, you can't unless you add on a wifi connection card, which we discussed in another thread. They sell it as a $40 add on, but it's basically paying to unlock a hardware feature. BUT the good news is that most of what it sounds like you will do is built into the machine (scan images and cut them, or cut basic shapes which are built in). And if you do eventually want to transfer images from the software you can easily do that with a cheap thumb drive. No wifi issues, no problem

It took a bit of time and reading/watching tutorials, but not as bad as I am making it sound. I regret that I put it off so long. Like you, I have zero space for another machine, but I was seriously tempted to buy it anyway. After learning to use my PixScan mat with my Cameo, the temptation to buy the Scan n Cut was minimal. Learning to use a new machine would probably take at least as long or longer to learn as it took me to use the PixScan mat. That thought is what got me to learn to use the mat.

Thank you scrapnnana I truly need to learn to use the PixScan first. I had already mentioned the Brother Scan n Cut to my husband and his response was "well I'm sure you would find space for it". haha, that was temptation right there. Neither my Cricut or Cameo are getting much use (mostly because I keep going back to cardmaking and not getting around to scrapping) so that right there should be reason enough to hold off. Thanks for your suggestion - it's good advice for me!!

@skellinton I didn't watch the video. Somebody told me there was a new Scan n Cut out. I just took a peek at it. Saw it had no scanner and said nope. The reason why I was interested in the Scan n Cut in the first place was because of the scanner. moraie I don't know if they are replacing. I don't think so. They still support my Disney SE-400 embroidery machine. That thing is like 4,000 years old. Brother tends to support things for a lifetime.

You should just watch the video, it makes it look like there are 87 steps involved and they slow it down so much. It is really a poor video if they want to show how simple it is. I agree that the benefit of the scan and cut is the scanner, I can’t really tell why this machine is better then the other scan and cuts or the cameo.

@amayalylac I didn't get the impression they were replacing the normal Scan n Cut line, either, but I really only skimmed all that. I also couldn't imagine them continuing to advertise the "new" CM350 if it was being totally replaced. IMO, the scanner is what makes their cutter unique and gives it a niche in the market. I'm still in love with mine, though!
@shells004 I didn't say anything when I saw your post the other day, because it sounded like you were pretty firm on the no space thing. I didn't have space for one, and really had to rearrange to make room. I ended up giving almost all of my acrylic paints to a school so that I could slide my Minc and Cameo under my desk (where the paints were). I thought I'd comment because you said you weren't using your Cameo/Cricut so much right now and were mostly doing cards. I'm in kind of the same place right now, and that's exactly why I bought it. The PixScan mat works, and if you don't want to spend the money on the machine, you have a completely workable option for cutting out stamps and it's not a necessary purchase. It's probably a good idea to try the PixScan since you already have the Cameo because you may be totally happy with it, and it may fit into your creative process just fine. That said, I feel like the PixScan mat is functional, but not really efficient. I know how to use my PixScan mat, and I'm fairly good with it, but there's a lot of times when I'd rather cut something out by hand than mess with setting up my laptop, taking the picture, sending it to my laptop, loading it into the software, then doing the trace/cut. Just typing all that makes me tired! With the Scan n Cut, I don't lose space to the laptop, and the speed makes a huge difference in my getting things done and even just wanting to play and make something. Anyway, I don't want to push you either way, but just thought that if card making is your primary craft right now and you happen to stamp a lot, that's actually a bit more of a reason to think about it. (If you don't stamp, there's no reason to get one.) There's several times I've seen cards on YT or somewhere that were lots of layered stamping, and I loved the look and thought about trying them, but didn't because I didn't want to make all the masks. Now making the masks is nothing, and even if I need 10 delicate flower masks, it only takes 2 minutes to cut them all out, and a card that might have taken me 40m or more before I can do in 15-20 with the Scan n Cut. It's been a life-saver the last couple of weeks because we've been having some work done on our house and my room is a mess and I have about a dinner-plate size space to make a card. I'm grateful I didn't need many cards this year, but I've managed to make the few I needed, and I've used the Scan n Cut on every one of them, and probably wouldn't have bothered without it. Good luck on your decision!
