I just heard about Movie Pass and I am intrigued, but then I heard about the Costco deal - 12 month membership for $89.99. Sounds like a great gift for movie lovers! You're welcome

Movie Pass is a subscription based service where you buy the card for $10 a month and you can go to as many 2D movies as you want (one movie a day per membership) so the Costco deal would be an even better bargain. Some friends and I were just talking about Movie Pass yesterday! We don’t go to movies at the theater often enough for it to work for us now, but for someone who does enjoy going out to movies frequently it would be a crazy good deal. ETA: The Costco deal also includes a one year membership to Fandor which is a movie streaming service similar to Netflix, normally $4.99 a month. MoviePass.com This website describes how it works. You can put in your zip code to see a list of participating theaters near you, there were about five within 20 miles of my house.

it's not limited to specific theaters, but the theaters have to take them.

If you click on the link, there is more information (one pass per day) and you can enter your zip to see theaters near you. Here is a Variety article on the pros and cons.

Has anyone bought a Movie Pass as a present for someone who is under the age of 18? I looked at the deal on Costco's website and noticed under the Terms and Conditions it says: Must be at least 18 years old to sign up. I'd like to buy it for my 16 year-old. Can I purchase it and give it to her to use? Would I be the person to sign up? I'm sure my questions are as clear as mud.

If I'm reading this correctly, you have to have your cell phone, go to the theater, click on the app and select your movie then go to the box office. Since I usually buy our tickets earlier in the day, I'd have to take DH's cell phone with me. And I also read some theaters charge $2.50 for premium seating which our theater has.

Around here they're very careful to card young-looking people who are in line at "R" movies, so a 16-year-old here would be limited to "G" and "PG" movies only, if they were alone or with young friends.

Anyone know how this works at theaters where you choose your specific seat when you buy the ticket? Here these are the theaters with the nice reclining seats. We always go online and choose our seats and pay ahead of time to be sure we're sitting together and not in the front row. I guess with some movies it wouldn't matter but popular ones or new releases and at popular times it might make a difference. I was thinking of getting this for dd but if she and her friends couldn't pick seats ahead of time and had to do it when they arrived at the theater it might be a problem.

It’s a pain in the ass. I’m going to cancel mine.had it theee months and I’ve only used it once. Plus if you are going with other people you have to sync with them to make sure they buy their ticket ASAP for the right seat.

I typed in my zip code and the closest one to me is not on the list. It is a nice one too, that is probably why. Trying to figure out if it is worth it. Sounds good on paper!

My daughter and her boyfriend have been using it for about six months and love it. They go to movies ALL the time, usually 3 times per week. There's a theater that takes the passes across from their apartment.

Yes, I bought subscriptions (hadn’t realized there was an age limit) flr my kids (15,17,18 and ds’s gf 17). I purchased through the gift subscription option. They send a notice to their email and they sign up. Can’t really surprise someone. They love it. The theater does offer the option to buy and pick seats online and of course they can’t use that option but they’ve never had any issues getting seats together when buying at the theater.

Cinemark is offering an $8.99/month ticket subscription too. unfortunately, it doesn't apply to the dine-in seats and those are the ones we usually buy. so, no movie passes for us from either offers.

(or however many people are going) At our theater you pick your seats. If buying at the theater they hand you an iPad to choose. All the transactions are seperate, but my kids all go up to the same teller. They choose where they will sit when the first person buys their ticket, all the rest follow suit. They have always been able to sit together using moviepass (4 diff transactions). You can not pre buy online at most theaters however. (There are a few chains that you can do so within the moviepass app but most you can not at this time). My kids love going to the movies and are perfectly willing to wait a few weeks to see a movie, so seating isn't difficult. The price is worth it for us.

True - however Cinemark's is only good for one movie a month? Not only that, Cinemark quit waiving $1.50 convenience fees for GC holders and now, even if you have an online balance with them you get dinged!! Bad Cinemark

Bad Cinemark yup---it's good for one ticket but you can buy a companion ticket for $8.99. and you get the 20% off the food. but that's still not such a great deal that i would jump on that. now, if they gave discounts on the dine-in seats......

Went to a theater that has a mix of seating and has an upcharge for the premium seating. It was irrelevant. I paid the cost for the entire thing (movie and premium seat) with my MoviePass card which is actually a Mastercard. MoviePass is good for one movie per day. I have now seen 6 movies since 11/28. Dh and I just came home from seeing "Disaster Artist." I no longer think in advance about whether a movie is worth spending money on. Now I think it terms of time- is it worth spending an evening or afternoon watching. Usually, it's with my husband, so it's worth it.

It's $5.25 each so basically if we both joined it would only save us about $20 a month. Since cell phone coverage is spotty by the theater, I'd rather not go through the hassle. I'm glad it works for you though.

The theater we were at tonight charges $14 something before taxes per person. Before MoviePass, we'd usually go to a local university where I went to med school. With my alumni ID, I pay $5 and dh pays $7, but the movies choices are limited there (lots of action films) and you sit in an actual lecture hall. It feels decadent going to a theater with the luxury seating now! LOL. It's the little things.

We've gotten so used to reclining leather seats that I can't imagine going to a regular theater again.
