Sue Grafton's daughter posted on her mom's Facebook page that she passed away last night.
I remember reading the first few books on her alphabet series in bound volumes when I was in my 20's - ABC then DEF together. Eventually, I caught up and began buying each one as soon as it was released. I love long series where the characters become like old friends, and I will miss periodically checking in on Kinsey.
I'll admit, my first thought was "What about Z?". It looks like the family will let the series end with her.

I’m so sorry to hear of her passing. I love her books, and I’m glad the alphabet will end with Y and there will be no movies/shows, per her feelings.

That's sad.....I enjoyed her books!
And, I think it should end in Y - if someone wrote the last book, it would be wrong.....different style of writing, different feel to the characters....just wrong

Oh, how sad. I didn't even realize she was ill. I'm glad they're ending the series and keeping to her wishes. Time to start reading over from the beginning, it's been a while since I've done that!

I am sad - I just finished Y is for Yesterday a couple of weeks ago. One of my favorite mystery series - I am glad they are letting the series end on Y.

I’m reading Y Is For Yesterday right now. I’ve read of Kinsey’s cases for years. May her memory be eternal.

May she rest in peace. I started reading the series in college when 'A is for Alibi' came out. I feel like Kinsey has been a friend for over 30 years, even though it wasn't that long in the books.

I've only read the first few books but I really think that when an author like her passes it is a major loss

I thought that one of her children was helped to write the last couple of books and that z for zero was almost completed?

I'm reading X now and was planning on reading Y as soon as I finish. What a shame, I have loved this series and have read it over many years. I am glad that they are ending on Y though, it wouldn't be the same if someone else wrote it.

this makes me very sad!! I was looking forward to reading Z. Y just seemed so dark, I don't like it ending that way

I was devastated to hear of her passing. I love the alphabet books. Their familiar locations in California made me believe her adventures actually took place not too far from me. I have been reading her series since college. I always wondered what she would do when she got to Z. I never imagined she wouldn't get there. So sad. She was Kinsey and Kinsey was her.

That's sad.....I enjoyed her books! And, I think it should end in Y - if someone wrote the last book, it would be wrong.....different style of writing, different feel to the characters....just wrong I also loved Lawrence Sanders and when the family authorized another writer to continue one of his series, it was far from the same. You could tell the writer tried to emulate his writing style but He just didn't capture the essence of what made Sanders great. I just stopped reading the new stuff.

That makes me very sad. I feel her books have been around for so long. I know she has many fans that will miss her.
May she rest peacefully in the big library in the sky.

I am so sad about her passing. I went to college in Santa Barbara (Santa Teresa according to Kinsey) in the 80s and it was so much fun figuring out what local landmarks she was mentioning in her books.

I’ve been worried for years that something might happen to disrupt the Alphabet series—this is so sad 🙁. My dog is named Kinsey Milkbone in honour of Grafton’s gumshoe. I’m grateful for all the Kinsey episodes we have!

Another sad person here. I read all of her books through Y. I saw her in an interview once and she seemed like such a nice person.
