I just received my results and it is so interesting to see my background!
Looking over my DNA matches, there is a woman listed at the top under "Close Family" which in this case Ancestry says the possibilities are aunt/uncle, niece/nephew, great-grandparent.. This person's daughter is listed under "1st Cousins" - along with two of my cousins. When I click to see the shared matches between the two of us it shows those two same first cousins, who are on my dad's side.
I'm assuming my dad had another sister that no one knows about? The woman is close to my age or a little older. It shows her age range to be 50-59, but she looks on the younger end of that; my dad's youngest sister is now 70-ish. I'm so bumfuzzled! I keep wondering if perhaps she's MY sister, but then with it showing her daughter as my cousin?
How accurate are the tests with pinpointing how you are related to a person?

Click on her name. Look for the "i" inside a circle, click on that. You will see Amount of Shared DNA. What does it say?

My experience is that it's pretty good with close relatives. My cousin's son and I (1st cousins 1x removed) compared our Ancestry results. If you were just looking at them side by side you would be hard pressed to see us as related. However, under my DNA Matches, he shows up as a 1st-2nd cousin with Extremely High confidence. He has no family tree so they are basing that comparison on just DNA results.
Good luck with solving your mystery!

Her daughter "could" be your 1st cousin once removed (if she is your sister)

So another question - since she and her daughter are both showing up in my matches, that means I'm going to show up in theirs, right? And they'll be notified of a new match?

I share 1,878 with my niece. So she might by your Aunt.

Her daughter "could" be your 1st cousin once removed (if she is your sister) Wouldn't that be a niece if this person is a sister to Rhondito? Her daughter and Rhondito's daughter are the ones who would be first cousins.

And they'll be notified of a new match? yes you will show up in theirs (unless there's some privacy tickbox you can tick to avoid - not sure on that) first cousins are the children of your aunts/uncles so if her daughter is a 1st cousin, she would most likely be your Aunt. I imagine that a half-sibling would show a closer match but perhaps not.

Okay, I'm thinking probably aunt.. I share 787 with her daughter, and 960 and 788 with my other two first cousins who are listed. So that seems on par.
I was getting a little freaked out about a surprise sister! LOL Although, a surprise aunt is a shocker too!

Most of her tree is private, including her parents. :/ That's so cool!! If it's private you can send a message. We discovered my blood dad's grandpa grew up in the same small town in Sweden as my Dh's family. The families all knew each other. It was fascinating especially comparing Dh's grandpa's journal. That's so cool I hope you can have good contacts. It also does give the little leaf if it has a new connection. My half siblings do show up on my dad's side as well, it's pretty accurate. We haven't done it yet, but thinking about it for DH's birthday.

You could just ask if it's a distant relative or you just want to see if it is the right personal in general and see her response. You never know if they're looking? I'll get ones every so often that it's a great uncle or aunt something like that so they want to verify the information. Same with Dh's on the Swedish stuff a lot of them names are the same just different spellings. So you could just be really general about it? Is there anyone in your family you could ask as well?

How old were your grandparents when your youngest aunt was born? If your dad's youngest sister is 70ish and this woman is 50ish that's a long time and would be more likely to be a half aunt if your grandmother was no-longer child bearing age would change the anticipated shared dna.

Is there anyone in your family you could ask as well? Well, both of my grandparents are dead, as well as my dad and his oldest sister; he has two sisters who are still living - one who doesn't speak to us and the other lives out in New Mexico and is getting on up in age. I may email her. I've reached out to one of my cousins to see if she's had any contact with the lady or if she knows anything. Do you recognize any of the names or places she has on her tree? I really can't tell anything from her tree, but I looked her up on FB. She's from my hometown and my mom thinks she knows who her "dad" is. She lives in Louisiana now. I don't know any of the people in her pictures. I'm pouring over her pictures trying to see any resemblance to anyone in my family LOL

So when this exact same thing happened to me, the person turned out to be an unknown half-sibling, because we were both conceived with donor sperm from the same donor (I had no idea that this was my personal history). I assume that my story is not super common, and I am now close to that half-sibling and am glad we connected, but make sure you are emotionally prepared to kick open doors if that is what you choose to do .

(my grandmother) She would definitely be a half-aunt. No way she could be my grandmother's child - my grandfather though, yes. I'm by no means an expert, but a half-aunt would not have the same amount of dna match as an aunt, she'd essentially be a 4th degree instead of 3rd. This chart puts the max at 1446 with the average being 891. The one thing that can totally throw this off is double cousin marriages or a long history of close relatives intermarrying- any of that in your family tree? My New Mexico branch DNA is totally worthless as pretty much everyone intermarried from the same small pool of people for 300 years - so I have 3-4th cousins who aren't really that close, we just share a higher amount of DNA than typical in distant relatives. A half aunt might make more sense if you've got some double great-grandparents in there, otherwise you should prepare for half-sibling and if it's something you definitely don't want contact about, hide/delete your results off ancestry. sorry forgot the chart: isogg.org/wiki/File:Shared_cM_version_3.jpg
