I just found out that all Texas residents can get a library card completely online to the Houston Public Library and then you have access to their digital book collection. Use the link below to apply and then you can login to their collection using the Overdrive app. I now have access to 3 libraries! Houston Public LibraryI added a second link below to another library you can do 100% online.

Thank you!!! I just signed up. Actually, doing so was easier than getting a library card/account at my Fort Worth library. There, I have to physically go in at least once every 2 years to verify my residency within the city limits.

So glad to help! My husband said you can get one at Mesquite Public Library 100% online too. I have an actual card from there but it could be worth a try. They have a decent collection of ebooks and allow patrons to request books and if they buy it they will automatically check it out to you.

I investigated a bit more and the City of Mesquite library is also free to all Texas residents and can be done 100% online. I’ve used their library for years and what I love is that they allow you to suggest books for them to buy for their collection. If they purchase the book, they will automatically check it out to you. I often go suggest books that a big name author is about to release and then end up one of the first to be able to read after its release date. City of Mesquite Public Library Application

Our library has ebooks, that we are supposed to be able to put on the kindle. I have never successfully been able to check one out and have it appear on my kindle. I think I need to go in and make the person at the desk complete the task for me until I conquer the demon.

If so, you need to be on a computer or download the app to your phone. You then add the library and sign in using your card number and pin. Check out a book and it will send you to Amazon and then when you complete the check out it will appear on your Kindle.

Residents of PA can do this with the Philadelphia Free Library, too. I wonder if other states have similar options? I've never looked. Good to remember!

I just signed up for both libraries. I had access to Houston because I have a library card for Galveston. I'm not sure how much longer before it expires though.

As long as you have it checked out you should be able to access from the cloud, but when you check it out there is a drop down menu and you can choose the device to send it to. If your Kindle isn’t showing up there check to see if it’s registered to the Amazon account you are signed in at.

Hmmmm........I didn't see anything like that. I'll call them tomorrow. The Mesquite Library said they would notify me in a few days of the number.

I'm not in TX, but I use the Northern California Digital Library to access my local library using Overdrive.
Here are a few tips
Load up your HOLDS with wait-listed items (I can have up to 8). When they become available you will get an email notification and you just have to log in and download the book out through Amazon.
In Settings change your Lending Duration to 21 days or whatever the longest is. Check the automatic check-out box.
Also (I just learned this) if there is a book you want, but its not in the library, hit the recommend button. Then if they do purchase the license for it you will automatically be added to the list. Example - On the reading threads I kept seeing The Dry. The library didn't have it, so I hit the recommend button. On Dec 28th, I got notice that they purchased it and I was added to the list. I was 3rd on the list.
I hardly ever purchase books since I found Overdrive.
Happy Reading!
