I never understood this nor did I understand how the grandmother so quickly sided with her other daughter’s killer (her son-in-law). they quickly mentioned- on megyn kelley's show- that Debra's sister was killed by her husband (the sister's husband) but i don't think it was mentioned on dateline at all i'm gonnna have to find the podcast Yup. And their MOTHER testified in his defense. Despite the fact that he totally planned the murder. I guess the apple didn't fall far.

If you’re not a podcast listener, you can read it on the LATimes website. Totally crazy story.

I listened to the podcast and watched it on Dateline. It was pretty stressful to listen to the podcast and I almost stopped. Hard to believe that Sandra could be that clueless or allow that POS to treat her family the way he did. It was also really stressful to listen to the recordings they had from him. How Sandra had a successful business, is beyond me!

This is what I meant when I said I didn’t understand why these women seemed to kowtow to the men. How do you defend the man who killed your daughter???

Did they not mention her nephew at all? Or was that a different case. I thought she was close to her nephew and helped raise him and he tried to stop dirty John too. I feel like it could’ve been a two hour show instead of one. Also, I wonder why the other sister didn’t want to be interviewed. And they should’ve mentioned his siblings not wanting to talk to him or how they believed he killed their father in the hospital.
Weird story and I feel for the daughter. Sad to say but probably won’t be the last time her mother dates again or brings in a guy to their life without actually checking into his background.

They didn't mention the nephew either. I really suspect none of the family wanted anything to do with her after everything that happened. Dateline did a terrible job putting together the show with only about 1/4 of the story.

I'm normally a big fan/follower of true crime - podcasts, trials, shows, etc.
But for whatever reason, I had a hard time connecting with this story. I listened to the podcast and struggled to get through it just from a "give a shit" standpoint. And I made it through about half of the show until I just walked away. I'm not sure what it is, but most likely I just find most of the people so unlikable that I just don't care.

I had never heard of this case until Dateline did the show. We watched this afternoon. I thought that he must have killed oldest daughter since there were no photos of her, nor interviews etc. Apparently that daughter is done with her mother. Perhaps the mother had been self absorbed all her life and this was the final blow for the daughters. Mother: Odd detachment--no emotion about "he almost killed my daughter. He probably would have killed me." The show blamed PTSD for the lack of emotion on the girl who was featured and attacked. I thought the other daughter must have dies as well. It seemed like the mother was desperate to be married / loved in spite of being so successful. Really Sad. Horrible that her daughters had to go through all that to save her life and almost lost their lives in the process.

I live for Dateline. So there's that. ( BB quote, best series ever ). Old Datelines are also on OWN and ID. 48 Hours is usually same subject matter as Dateline. Stories like Dirty John are my faves. Not interested in serial killers or child situations. If it's a two hour show, it's a good one.

I have to admit I have a hard time remembering if I have watched an episode before. So many of the stories have similarities to other stories. But I am getting to the point where all older episodes are ones I have seen before. I like to do my housework with dateline on. Jen

I’m amazed she’s been able to keep and grow a successful business. Sadly, there are many women who are sharp about everything in their lives except the men. They have such a desperate need for "love" that they will truly overlook anything. I have seen women willing to "forgive" their husbands sexually abusing their children because "I love him./I vowed for better or worse./It's a sickness and I wouldn't leave him if he got cancer, so.." But clearly, the women in this family have an issue with forgiveness and/or willfully blind stupidity when it comes to men given how the grandmother testified on behalf of the man who planned and killed her own daughter at point blank range. And then the sister (Debra) is worried about being polite to her sister's murderer when she sees him at school events? Screw. That. Shit.

Sad to say but probably won’t be the last time her mother dates again or brings in a guy to their life without actually checking into his background. John's background didn't even matter to her once she found out about him! Still went back to him! Madness! I am hoping she is in some sort of therapy. Did they mention anything about that on Dateline?

I'm listening to the podcast now, my first ever podcast, so much easier to listen to know now that I know what the cast looks like. I'm so disappointed that Dateline left out so much of the story! Dateline made it seem like she had only 2 kids, she has 4 and a nephew. She's been married 5 times! I think that speaks volumes about her. Her sister was murdered by her husband and their mother immediately forgave the killer and even testified on his behalf in court! Resulting in him only getting a 5 year sentence, which he only served 2.5 years of. The podcast gives you John's story too, how he became the person he is. Sadly, there are many women who are sharp about everything in their lives except the men. They have such a desperate need for "love" that they will truly overlook anything. This is so true! The podcast said after they got married (2 months after meeting) and she rented the house for them, she paid a year's worth of rent up front. It was $6500 a month. If she has that kind of spare change sitting around, how could she marry someone she didn't know and risk him stealing her money??? The other curious thing I wondered was why he kept all his prison and arrest files in her house! Her daughter theorized that those were his trophies and he enjoyed having those records.

I watched it and will now listen to the podcast to get the rest of the story. He wore a University of Arizona cap in a couple photos. He seemed close to my age so I looked it up. We were a year apart there. It was a big campus and none of my college friends knew him...thankfully!!

This was mentioned during the podcast, his new wife found it weird a 50 year old man would always wear his alma mater. They interviewed one of his college roommates who said they lived together for a year and after he disappeared realized that he knew nothing about John's background/history.

I’d love to know the name of his roommate! There’s only a slim chance I’d recognize his name, but you never know. I’m going to start the podcast tomorrow.

I’ve never heard a podcast, but that’s a topic for another thread.
After watching this episode of Dateline & reading this thread, it only confirms that should something happen to my DH, I’d never date again. But that woman ignored all the red flags.

On Facebook, in a local group I belong to, there are people who knew him as a neighbor. They shared a few scary stories about him. A lady I know went to U of D with him and had experiences with him. Small area I guess? I am not from the area so I find it intriguing but most people don’t really want to talk about it.
