All 3 of my girls applied to one school. It was the one they really wanted to go to. They all were accepted and got scholarships. They LOVE their school, and it is definitely the right place for them!

I do, too! My one daughter has her heart set on U of Michigan, but we are out of state and the cost is prohibitive, plus the out-of-state acceptance rate is 15%. So her back up school is Notre Dame . We are in VA and we have GREAT state schools. I told her she needs to have a REAL backup school so she's applying to UVA, So three for her. My other DD only wants a state school because that's what she can afford. She has her heart set on UVA, but I'm not sure she'll get in. She's looking at James Madison and George Mason too.

DD who is a student with Aspergers applied to three and got accepted into each one. She put a deposit on the school she wanted in April but one of the other schools relentlessly recruited her and offered special accommodations including a private room on top of the Presidential Scholarship she received when offered admission. She rescinded her admission to the first choice on May 1st for a refund and paid the deposit for the other school the same day. It was agonizing trying to help my daughter with this because I didn't want to provide too much input or opinion and sway her. We visited two of the colleges 3 times from January to March to interview for additional scholarship money, take tours, sit in on classes, and meet with department heads of her intended major/minor. Before applying she visited all of the colleges several times as well. I think it is a good idea to see the campus at different times throughout the year if you can.
Oh and since it does cost money to apply, we asked our daughter to refine to 3 choices after visiting and researching 6 colleges. Good luck!

Just wondering... To how many colleges did you/your kids apply? We have many colleges/universities in VA so it can be overwhelming but check out the school's counseling web page for college fairs or college search engines.

While we're on the subject of college, can I just make a push for college visits? A lot of my kids at school wanted to apply to this place or that based on pictures and visits from recruiters. If you are really serious about a school it is well worth the time and money to make a personal visit.
We had a grant that enabled us to do field trips with our kids to about six or seven different colleges around the state last year, and being able to just get on campus and kind of soak up the atmosphere is really important to making a good decision. There were several kids who adjusted their list based on a visit.

My s leaves for college in August. He applied at 5 and he was accepted at 5. We don't qualify for any financial aid (even the most generous schools) so he was chasing the merit scholarships. He cast a wide net with a variety of schools.
Younger s will be doing this soon- hopefully the list will include some more safeties so we can get it under 20,000 a year after scholarship

mine are both at a local community college, so while you "apply" there, everyone gets in so no big deal.

I love this thread as I have a son who is going into his senior year of HS. We are getting ready to do our 3 main college visits. All of the choices are 2-1/2 hours from here (about as close as you can get), because he doesn't want to be too far away his first year. I'm sure he'll apply to all 3 and maybe a 4th. I'm excited and nervous! Maybe we should start a post about everything we need to do in the next year to get ready for graduation/college with our kiddos? I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed!

For anyone new to this- my first two suggestions would be run the net price calculator on each college website. The FAFSA only predicts federal aid
The calculators are pretty accurate as long as there is no special circumstances like divorced parent, small business, family farm, real estate investments etc
Also go to collegeconfidential.com. Tons of info!!

OK, we have narrowed it down to 7 3 state schools, 2 top tier and 2 ivies. FWIW, DS has a 32 ACT score and is an underrepresented minority. VA peas - we do have so many state schools here. Thanks to all who continue to share their experiences. ETA, we have visited 3 schools so far, we will visit another in July.

Ds visited 6, applied to four (a mix of in state, out of state, and private) and was accepted at all of them. He attend ed the one that offered the best scholarship package (University of Florida) and he was very happy with his decision Dd visited 6 and knew right away which one she wanted to attend. She was prepared to apply to other schools but only applied to one, as her school of choice aggressively recruited her and she received her admission letter right away.

I applied to University of Northern Colorado and Kansas State University. I was accepted to both and eventually decided to go to K-State.

I was able to visit both the colleges I applied to my senior year (sans parents no less) and fell head over heals for K-State. It was such a great fit for my personality that despite not living anywhere near it I still want to go back and finish my degree there.

DD had her heart set on one university when she was a sophomore. When she was a Jr and Sr she visited 4. She only applied to her 1st choice and was accepted.

My oldest visited 4 colleges and applied to 3 - 1 competitive private college, our state flagship school, and an out of state state school. She received scholarships at 2 of them. She picked the private school, went there for 2 years and is transferring to the state flagship this fall.
Youngest looked at 4 state schools, and one non competitive private college. She applied to 3 of the state schools and was accepted at all 3. She went to school for one semester and decided it wasn't for her. Came home and is going to community college part time. She suffers from depression. The combo of being away from home and a rigorous course load was too much for her.

My brother & I both only applied to one. I regret not applying to the second one I wanted; I'd have gotten in. That wasn't the issue. I was convinced by others to stay local and I regret it. My bro was happy he stayed local (girlfriend & such).

DD applied to 3 schools. Two were in state (and happen to be where DH and I went), one out of state. We visited 2 of the 3. She was accepted by all 3, and went to summer orientation last week for the school of her choice.

My ds will be a senior this year, he just went to visit Washington State University, and this fall he wants to visit another Washington college. I personally wish he would choose NAU but he has his heart set on leaving, this mom would love for him to stay in state but I know he has to fly...

Both dds applied to one and got in. Youngest dd will apply to more to have options of dance teams, scholarships, etc. the other two knew exactly which school they wanted and were willing to wait if they had to to get in.

DD applied as a Freshman to 3 and didn't get accepted to any because her foreign language wasn't accepted. (bad advice from guidance counselor in high school on which college course replaced a year of language.) So she got her AA from our community college and as a transfer student applied at 5 and was accepted to 4.
DD2 went straight to community college and hasn't made it through that yet!

DS will be a college junior. He applied to 8 plus our state university system. It was a mix of long shot, middle and safety, and his guidance counselor's predictions were pretty accurate. We visited most of them. In the end, he was accepted to his first choice and is at a school that is a perfect fit.
DD will be a high school senior, and will have about the same number, but completely different schools. We are in the midst of the visiting process.

My son's list included 9 schools. He applied to 4 UCs, 1 out of state and early decision to one in state college (obviously his first choice). He was accepted in early December to his first choice and had to withdrawal his applications to the other colleges and then the two private and another out of state he never ended up applying to.

OK, we have narrowed it down to 7 FWIW, DS has a 32 ACT score and is an underrepresented minority. S is a high stats/ excellent ec kid- URM ALSO- but not low income or first generation. He also hasn't suffered any hardship so I don't think the URM was really an impact. He applied for 2 diversity scholarships at two different colleges and didn't get either but we are happy with his choice

Happymom,
We are not 1st generation or low income either. I am hoping it may help. It may depend on which URM the school is looking for.
BTW, what does ec mean?
