Just wondering...
To how many colleges did you/your kids apply?

My son only applied to one university and he was accepted. He has Asperger's and is very single-minded! He didn't even apply to our home school, Univ of Arizona, because he already had his acceptance back in mid-September of last year. I'm sure my middle son will be different, but he has 3 years to go.

Oldest dd applied to 2. But she had her heart set on the one, so the 2nd one was sort of an eh moment in case she didn't get accepted to the one?
Youngest dd applied to 5, and got accepted to all 5.

My dd visited about 8 schools. She applied to three. By that point she had it narrowed down and was strongly leaning in one direction. She got accepted a all three schools and went where we figured she would choose.

DD applied to three colleges. One was her fallback, close enough to live at home, option if she didn't get enough scholarship money to go away to school. One was her first choice, and the third was one that she had not considered before, but they were giving a full, four year scholarship to one of our students. After she visited, she decided to try for the scholarship and got it. It has turned out to be the best thing ever...she is really happy there. (And I am happy that it is affordable for us!)

Gosh, that was a long time ago , but I believe I only applied to the one I went to since I was pretty adamant about attending. I was seventh in my class, played varsity sports for all four years, and lettered 12 times so I wasn't incredibly worried about getting accepted. There were two other state schools that would have been my backups though. Melissa

My oldest goes off to college in August. He visited and applied to 1 college. It is one of our state universities. Since he was in the top 5% of his class he was automatically admitted into the honors program after applying.
I was a bit bummed he didn't apply to other schools. I thought it would be good to visit and see what options were available to him. He was absolutely certain that is where he wants to be for the next 4 years of his life. At this point his life plans include graduate school.

I have twins that will be seniors this year. Right now they each have 16 schools on their list, with at least 3 that I think they will definitely cut. Yikes!!!

DD1 applied to two-but had her heart set on going to the same college as her best friend. Luckily, they were both accepted and they're getting ready to start their 3rd year. DD2 applied to 3 and went to her #1 choice. DS is starting 10th grade this year and we've already talked about going to the college fair at school this fall.

My oldest applied to 3. He knew exactly which program and which school he wanted to attend and he chose to go to that school even though one of the others was possibly more prestigious and offered slightly more financial aid.
My 2nd is applying to 9 0r 10 -- as advised by a college finance class he and DH attended. He's a strong candidate and we're told that with multiple offers come some negotiating leverage as far as the financial packages. We'll see how that goes. He's a very driven kid, and he's got a strong application, so he may have multiple strong choices.
For myself, way back when . . . Five.
Think of it this way -- applications fees are very minimal compared to the cost of college overall. You're investing time and energy and a certain amount of emotional engagement, but the potential payoff can be big and well worth it.

Twins here... they both had 1 choice (differnet from each other) and their fallback was the local community college. They both got into their first choice though.

My older dd visited 3 colleges but only actually applied to one and was accepted. She just finished her first year and really liked it.
Younger dd will be a high school senior this year and is looking at 3 colleges also.

I applied to something like 9. Even then, there were certain lottery schools. I had the stats for such schools, but being a white girl from NJ who played some musical instruments and did theater was not special enough. In the end, I was waitlisted at some of those schools and went to the place that I was the best fit in the first place.
Dd17 technically only applied to 1. But, she's unusual and not exactly attending college in the full time traditional sense.

Thanks everyone!!! Our list has 9 right now.
An Early Decision school (his first choice, a top tier out of state)
An Early Action school (his second choice, a state school, first if there is no financial aid at the original first choice)
We also have 3 other state schools, 1 private school (in state), 2 Ivies (you never know), and one out of state public school)
Should we narrow it down?

My son applied to five schools. My daughter only applied to two schools. Both kids ended up getting into their first choice schools and are very happy with their choices.
I don't think nine schools is to many. Good luck!

My D1 applied to 5 and visited 4. All were large state flagships and, using reach/match/safety terminology, there were 2 matches and 3 safeties and she was accepted by all. This was a few years ago; she's a rising college junior now.
FWIW, my D was at the low end of college applications at her high school. Most applied to between 8 and 12, and some applied to more than 20. A lot of kids had reach-heavy lists and cast a wide net.

My dd and her friends all knew they wanted a state school, since we're so fortunate here in Virginia to have a large selection of state schools of all sizes. She visited about six of them and fell in love with one. She applied to only that one at first, because they have the Early Action thing -- that's where you apply on line, then attend one of their open house weekends and bring your transcripts with you. Then they will let you know by THAT WEEK if you're in or not. We went to the weekend right before Thanksgiving and they called her on Tuesday to say she was admitted. omg. Her senior year was practically stress-free compared to some of her friends.
Anyway, she only applied to one because she knew that if she did not get in she still had plenty of time to apply to a few more. Turns out she didn't have to. And it sure saved us a bunch of money on application fees. lol

My son only applied to 2. We only visited 2. He loved the school that he will be attending upon his first visit. He only applied to the 2nd because it is a good private school. He visited it and didn't like it. The whole process with him was very easy.
I have a daughter who will be graduating this year. She will be difficult. Her biggest desire is to move out of state. We have visited 2 schools so far. One she loved. I told her she needs to start seriously looking at schools so she has some choices. The school she loves is difficult to get into and very expensive.

My niece who is a stellar student applied to 10. She was playing the scholarship game as well as applying to her top choice schools. She was accepted at 9 and wait listed at Brown. Not sure what happened with her wait list status, but she ended up picking another school that gave her a full ride scholarship, the others were in the half-ride range.
My son who is a middle of the road student applied to 3 1/2 state schools. I say 3 1/2 because he never sent in his SAT scores to the 4th school as he changed his mind about them before he got that far. It turned out they accepted him anyway. But, he's going to his first choice school.
