They look to me like they're just weird bracket shapes, with some other smaller shapes thrown in to boot.

If you look at the small pics along the left side of the screen, it looks like it cuts and scores the accordion piece for the back of the book? and there are some swoopy edges plus some smaller accents (I saw a heart, maybe a flower?)

The rectangle piece with the scores vertically along the spine create the tabs that the individual pages attach to. It would be accordion folded in and out in such a way so that there will be extra space between the pages to accommodate bulkier embellishments on the pages.
