My DS just turned 13 and is starting with the breakouts. He washes his face with Cetaphil each night but I would like to get him a face treatment cream he can use each night. What do your teens use?

ProActiv X-Out (bought from the kiosk machine in the mall) works better than prescription medication for our teen.

Clorox water Or Epsom's salts.
My son rinsed his skin for a month with Epsom's salts and it clear up his chest and back.
Baking soda water will work too.

After washing, is he using any kind of moisturizer? If not, his skin is making even more oil to compensate for lack of moisture.

Mine is struggling with black heads rather then pimples. I haven't figured anything out yet for him.

My daughter uses this moisturizer and it is very gentle. It has salicylic acid and she uses benzoil peroxide as needed on breakouts.

My 14 year old dd uses Proactive ... she's really good about using it properly ... it's not cheap so that was the deal with us I ordered it online for a lot less than they sell it at the mall kiosk ...

What he needs to do is change the ph of his skin. And stay away from chocolate/sugar and dairy.
Blackheads: Stop touching your face and pull your hair back. You want to use a gentle exfoliant twice a day. Oatmeal is good. And an egg white mask.
For acne on the chest and back. Start use dye and fragrance free laundry soap. And absolutely no softeners. If you use bleach or vinager in your wash , rinse it again. In the shower try dawn dish washing liquid. Just a bit.
Use clean towels and paper towels to dry hands and face with. Clean under fingernails everytime you wash your hands. Clean pillowcases are a good idea.
This may seem extreme, but you are trying to clear up an infection.

My niece had terrible acne and the only thing that worked to clear it up was Proactiv.

my 15 year old finally started accutane after a year of terrible breakouts--almost cystic. She put him on various topicals for 2 months and then we finally moved to accutane. It's not a decision to take lightly, but after 2 1/2 months on the drug his skin is almost perfect.
I went on accutane myself at 23 after 8 years of terrible acne. I didn't want him to go through that.

Paula's Choice has a line for acne that is very good. It treats the pores and acne and includes moisturizer as well. They also have a trial size so you can try the products out for <$20. Link

We've had good luck with proactive, but after time it stopped working for my dd. She then started using something from dermatologist - she freaked when she couldn't get it any longer because pharmacist said it wasn't being made. Another pharmacist told her it was over the counter now - it's called Panoxyl.
Most of my kids have gone between the two, Panoxyl and Proactive and we've had pretty good success with them.

My ds and a nephew both had bad cysts and acne - the only thing that worked for both of them was Accutane. Ds took it almost 17 years ago and nephew about 8 years ago. Both have clear skin now and no lasting side effects.

My oldest had acne. Tried Proactive. Made it better for a while, and then got horribly worse. She ended up trying everything over the counter and RX and finally Accutane got rid of her acne.
My younger DD (17) has had a small bit of acne. Nothing like her sister. We immediately went to dermatologist. She uses a gentle face wash and has a cream/lotion that is RX that she applies at night. It has cleared her skin up completely. She is diligent with it though. She also uses a gentle moisturizer in the a.m.

My 16yo DD kept having breakouts so the dr gave her Retin A cream. It look a couple months for it to work but it has really cleared her skin up very well. She also tried another medicated gel that she only used a few times because she was having reactions to it. It was burning her skin and really making it peel. So she just kept up with the Retin A and her skin has been very clear. And it's super soft. She doesn't have any cystic acne.

I was on Accutane for 6 months about 10 years ago. I found the side effects to be unpleasant. My skin dried up and split around my eyes, mouth and nose and actually bled a little. I looked like an Ebola victim. Blood pressure went up and I had hip pain for months after.

My oldest was on Accutane while in HS (she is now a Sr in college). The only side effects she had was dry skin and a dry mouth/lips. She carried lip balm with her always, and always had water. She also had to be careful in the sun - always wear sunscreen.

I've read of numerous cases where acne (even cystic acne) cleared up after people dropped dairy from their diets. You can look for yourself at forksoverknives.com under Articles and then Success Stories when you see the pop up. You have to scroll down a bit but look for the article titled "How We Cured Cystic Acne with One Simple Diet Change". It's about a couple of twins and their story.
You obviously don't have to take this approach, but it's cheaper and healthier than some of the other choices especially cystic acne.

My DS (18) has had a rough go of it with acne. We tried Proactive and Humane with limited success and then went to his PCP and they put him on Clindamycin gel and Desloratadine oral. He still uses the Humane and some of the Proactive with the Rx and his face is much improved.

My youngest DD started to get acne when she was about 15 or 16. My Mom, who was a firm believer in Dial Antibacterial bar soap, told me to have DD was her face with Dial. It worked and in a few weeks, was gone. DD was lucky and it never came back. When my sister was a baby, she got a horrible case of cradle cap. The pediatrician had Mom use Phisoderm (?). It only made it worse. Our neighbor's grandmother told Mom to use Dial soap on her scalp. Mom did and it cleared up the cradle cap. After that, Mom was sold on Dial soap.
