I am in my 50's, so it was bound to happen. Got a membership invite from the AARP.
Looking for input. Join or not? Pro? Cons? If you are a member, what services do you use?
Thank you in advance for any and all advice.

58 but not a member. Their views do not align with mine. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

I'm 50 and I joined a few months after turning 50. No doubt, they have political opinions and they lobby. They look out for the olds and I'm getting there. I have not used any of the services as of yet. I do read the magazine when it comes. That is about it.

Yup, been a member for quite a few years. I use it for the discounts on insurance, eyeglasses and hotels. I like saving money.

We/he joined when DH turned 50. For such a low amount, it seems logical to me. Discounts on motels, car rental etc. I enjoy the monthly magazine articles.
IIRC, many people got very angry with AARP because it supported Medicare for those who are retired. I am very happy to have Medicare insurance so I am glad that passed.
Like any organization, I may not agree with all that they do, but I find it is nice to have SOME organization willing to lobby for senior citizens.
I did become aware of something last year. The dues are only 5 or 10 per year. However, a mailing will come that APPEARS to be for dues, but it is really for the AARP foundation. I closely examine those notices now and make sure I am paying in to the place I want and not getting played.

Nope.
I have been getting mailing since I was 20, because we lived in a house owned by a woman with almost my first name and my last name.
Do you think the mailman was confused by the baby catalogs and the old person catalogs, both coming in my name?

Never joined. We have found DH can often get 'senior' discounts just by asking at many hotels. We don't travel as much as we used to so I suppose it depends on your spending habits whether you would find it useful.

I get much cheaper hotels, free gym memberships and discounts at stores I shop at all of the time. It cost me $16 a year.

We are members. We use AARP for our supplemental health care policy. We are very happy with our coverage and will continue to be members for that reason.

My husband was, but was too embarrassed to use the card, so I quit sending in the subscription, lol. I feel like my card is just the opposite. Female clerks tell me I look much too young to have a card. (I think they think you have to be 55, but 50 is the age.) I just smile and say thanks.

We are. So far we’ve only used it for restaurant discounts. My neighbor uses his for additional medical coverage on top of his Medicare. I’m just hoping in the future they will start a medical plan for people over 50 that will be better than the current Obamacare selections, which are quickly exceeding my budget.

I use it for my eye exams for eyeglass prescriptions (refractory exam). It costs me $35 instead of $110.
We use it when we travel. Some times it beats all the other hotel discounts, sometime not.
My brother-in-law and his wife use it for their supplemental health insurance for Medicare. They love it and have had it for years.

I am a member and use the card for discounts-primarily for hotels.
My mom has gotten supplemental insurance through them and it is a great plan.

I'm not a member, although I find my AAA membership is great at getting discounts for me. My husband and I are both old enough for AARP, but figured that our AAA memberships probably covered any discounts we'd actually use (mainly hotels). Based on the responses here though, it sounds like there may be other benefits that I really wasn't aware of. I may have to do a little research!

Would y'all elaborate on this. I did a quick random search and found the AARP were called both liberal and conservative by people. Google *seniors tore up their AARP cards* and you'll get plenty of reasons why many did. A quick Google scan brings up several stories from 2009. Perhaps you can share further, please? SaveSave

For those wanting to join a senior organization who are concerned with the politics of it, there is AMAC for conservatives, relatively comparable in price and benefits to AARP. We belong to neither. DH is now 55 and between all the places that offer 55+ discounts and now with our Veterans IDs, we’re good on all that. In reading about both organizations, a lot of folks say that your mail box and email box are going to be jammed full of their advertising.

I have a membership so I can get my car insurance through them. It was about $500 a year cheaper than any one else. I haven't used it for any other discounts or services. I just got a mailer from them about auto insurance, so I'm going to call for a quote. When I retired at age 47, AARP sent me an offer to join. I did, because it was so cheap and paid for itself in a few uses on motel rooms, etc. I just got a renewal form the other day and I've been debating. I am pretty much homebound now, and don't see myself traveling, etc. So, if the auto insurance can get me a great deal, I will renew my AARP.
