Right now I have a small area. I have it pretty well laid out the way it can be for now but I have a new space in the works so I will be looking for something better for my stash.
I am the type of person who needs everything within arms length. Even my "dream" room will be cozy, but well thought out. LOL
How do you store your stuff? Do you categorize things and store them together (papers go with papers, CS all in the same place, all letter stickers together) or by theme/pattern/color (all the blues, browns, greys... all the florals together, stripes together, etc)?
What about your pens, markers, colored pencils?

I'm in the process or redoing my small scraproom as well so I'd love to hear ideas, too.
I will say, though, that I've organized by color in the past and it was a huge mistake.I ended up reorganizing everything by type/category after about a year. It just didn't work for me because I didn't think that way. I don't think "Oh, I need something pink here", I think "I need a die cut" or brad, or ribbon, or whatever. I also forgot about what I owned because who wants to go through 9 bins by color to see what's in there that you forgot about?
I'll also add that I got the Stamp'n'Storage ink pads, refill & marker holders (2 of them, they each hold all 3 things) and they are fabulous and so helpful - they're on one side of my desk (an L-shaped desk) and so easy to reach for and everything is so pretty and organized. It was one of the best storage investments I've made. The punch holder is pretty fantastic, too.

I have a large room - but I love good organization.
Papers are stored by manufacture, except for specialty papers. Those are stored by the type of paper they are. Vellum with vellum, glitter with glitter... Cardstock is stored vertically by color.
Embellishments are a bit different. Flat stickers are stored in a drawer together, sorted by brand. Enamel dots are are in a drawer together (not sorted). Die cuts are in a metal trough, sorted by color. Ribbons are just in a jar. Same with washi tape. Brads and flair are in their own jars.
Pens, markers, coloring pencils are in buckets sorted by type. Paint is just thown into a bin, not sorted at all.
Flat, smaller alphabets are stored in a 6x8 album sorted by color. Thickers are stored in a drawer by color.

When you plan your new space, visualize how you will craft in there. Here are a few questions with MY answers, which may be completely different from yours.
What do you reach for, first? I look for papers that go with the theme of the photos I want to scrap (the seasons, holidays, family, indoor/outdoor play, school, sports,...)
What do you think of, next? Then I look for cardstock that will either back the papers or act as matting, or whatever. So I need something that will match the colours in my photos &/or Paper
How do you do your title and journaling? Up until now, I have used a lot of letter and word/phrase stickers, and a few journaling/PL cards. The letters need to match the colours on my page; the phrases need to match the theme
What extras do you add on? I go in fits and starts from one embellishment type to the other: wood veneer, metal, brads/eyelets, chipboard (either pre printed or naked) I often think of the particular SHAPE I want, as well as the TYPE of piece. And then there is bling...
While my scraproom lives in a perpetual mess as I play in it, each of these elements have their own place in here: Papers are sorted by theme. Collections stay together until there are just too many scraps or too few papers, but then are mixed in with other similar themed collections. Cardstock and letter stickers are organized by colour. Phrase stickers and journaling/PL cards are stored by theme, often with the collection they came with. Embellishments are stored by type (for example, all wood veneer together) but within each type, I have them sorted by shape. I love divided trays or containers for this. Bling and inks and pens are sorted by colour.
Oh, and I tend to store all my tools in one section of my room, with accessories for a tool next to it (for example all my dies and embossing folders under the stand that holds my Vagabond.
Have fun visualizing, planning and playing in your new space!

It was one of the best storage investments I've made. The punch holder is pretty fantastic, too. I organized my very small embellishments that are bits and pieces by color. I have a few tags, small pieces of twine, left over enamel dots, and gems organized in 5 x 7 photo holders. With the rest of my stash, I keep like things together. I do like being able to take the small cases to crops and have just that little something extra I need organized by color. I keep my regular twine, dots, and gems together in separate storage containers.

I store embellishments by type, mostly on my clip it up. I mostly scrap with kits at the moment, so have a section of kits and then also make my own page kits and put them in bags (makes it easier for me to scrap when I have fewer choices). Random paper I store in one container by colour. My paper and kit are on a shelf behind me but within reach.
I also store cardstock in the same area as the paper - I organise that by colour but don't have a large selection of coloured cardstock as I use a lot of white.

I have a small space too, 7 feet by 7 feet. I moved from a space that was triple that size. I did have to do quite a bit of purging, but I've never been happier with my space. The back wall is a 5x5 Ikea cube shelf, my desk with drawer storage is on the opposite wall. I have one Alex drawer unit and two Raskog carts. I literally spin my chair and everything is in reach. I had at one time dreamed of cabinets with doors for my space, but that's just not the way I work. Everything is out in the open.
Cardstock is stored together in ROYGBIV fashion. Pattered paper is in the cropper hopper paper holders sorted by manufacturer, that's how I scrap. I do have some sorted by themes...birthday, Christmas, camping. But most is kept by company.
Embellishments are sorted by company as well. I keep one Raskog of Tim products, markers, etc.
I generally do not sort things by color, that's not the way I think. The exception is card stock and my project life cards. Once I've gone through and used some of a kit, I separate the cards by color, with some categories for themes.

I don't think I have as much stuff as many of you have, but I still try to keep it somewhat organized. Almost all of my supplies are on one wall right behind my craft table (an old kitchen table). I have 3 IKEA 8 cube units on their sides, and I can fit a row of 12 Sterilite 3 drawer containers on top of them, and baskets on top of those. Everything is pretty easy to find because I know where it all is, but sometimes I have to dig a little to get to it.
I started off using my baskets for sorting, but when I was done, I just kept using them for storage. One for ribbons, one for strings, twine, and cords, one for acrylic paints, one for acrylic mediums, one for misc small containers, and 2 for glues (how did that happen?) I have other baskets for various other projects too.
I have my stamping and coloring stuff in a separate section of my drawer space, way off to one side, and my papers and card stock are off to the other side. The middle section has all kinds of miscellany. The contents of those drawers change often depending on how much shopping I've been doing and what projects I'm working on.
My alpha stickers and words are in a drawer together, but all the rest of of my die cuts, stickers, wood, etc. are lumped together in a couple of photo boxes in the IKEA cubes and sorted by theme. So when I go looking for Halloween stuff, I have all my Halloween stickers, die cuts, and anything else Halloween right there in one place. I also have a "jewelry box" for brads and little tiny bits of things.
In other IKEA cubes, I have supplies that I don't use often in about 2 dozen more photo boxes and a multitude of large plastic jars. They hold things like paint markers, extra adhesives, my glue gun, and lots and lots of kid craft items. And of course, on the bottom shelf, lots and lots of albums. I'm not sure if that's inspiring or depressing.
There are lots of smaller containers in the room too, like jars for paint brushes and scissors, but my colored pencils are sideways in a basket because some of them are too short now for jars. These little containers sit on a table where I keep my die cutter and dies.
The stuff I use all-the-time is kept in a few travel containers (Snap-Lock) so they're easy to grab and go for a crop. They usually just sit out on my table when I'm working on something.
I love looking at room tours online, but in the end I just do what works for me and the way I scrap. I'm sure you'll have a great time setting up your new space!

I have a small "in hands reach" space also but I'm a simple scrapper so what works for me might not work for you.
I have PP and cardstock sorted by colour (I have 3 of the Recollections cubes with shelves -so 12 spaces - Black/Grey, Red, Blue PP, Blue CS, white/vellum, pink, green PP, green CS, brown/beige, yellow/orange PP, yellow/Orange CS, purple.
I have my scraps sorted into file folders by colour as well.
Stickers and flat-ish embellishments are in file folders by theme* - I also have a small 3-drawe unit (letter stickers, generic embellishments, brads etc...)
* I have a handful of themes with more stuff and they are in 2 3 drawer units on top of my paper cubes (the file folders with scraps are between them) - Christmas, Girl Scout, Navy, other Military...
Pens I have in pen cups - I don't have a ton though.

I have a small space, maybe 8x8 corner of my basement? and sound just like you in that I'm an "arms reach" scrapper.
I can't strongly enough recommend the low ALEX drawer set from Ikea. I also love my raskog. Both are on wheels, so I can store them neatly, but pull them right to me when I'm scrapping.
Paper: by manufacturer, plus date. New stuff kinda sits separate to encourage me to use it. No colour sorting. Embellies by type: rub ons, die cuts, stickers. Enamel dots on a binder RING. Flair are glue dotted to a piece of acetate that I stuck to cardboard, and store in a baggie so I can see what I have at a glance.
I really need to do some re-organizing too.

I have a relatively small stash. Everything is within reach of my desk.
All paper, patterned & cs is standing upright on the desk.
I have a wide mesh office "cup" for my pens, Sharpies, ruler, & scissors.
I have one cloth 12" cube for embellishments. They are organized by categories that I scrap in gallon size Ziploc bags.
My adhesives are on my desk.
I have my stamps and dies next to my desk in Sterilite drawers.
I like to have everything within reach. And I've been careful to not outgrow my space.

I have a small space where I can reach everything while sitting at my desk. I have two sets of old metal drawers that sit on top of my desk with most of my embellishments, and another taller set of drawers that sits beside my desk with just about everything else. I have two themed drawers - for Christmas and travel, just about everything else is stored by type.
All my paper is in two small desktop drawers. Cardstock is sorted ROYGBIV, patterned paper has no order to it other than the newest things (or the ones I've pulled out but not used on my last pages) are on the top.
My embellishments are broadly stored by type. I have drawers for rub ons, pockets and envelopes, washi, and journaling tags/labels/cards. Enamel dots, brads, eyelets, and wood veneer are all stored in one drawer. The brads are sorted by colour, the wood veneer loosely grouped by shape (hearts, stars, basically everything else), and the enamel dots have no order at all.
I cut my sticker sheets into individual pieces once I've used them a few times. They are stored along with die cuts, puffy stickers, and anything else that is sort of flat-ish and would likely be used in clusters. I have these sorted by colour as I find I usually think "I want a die cut or a word sticker or something and it needs to be pink". After trying to sort everything by colour and hating it I've found sorting smaller categories by colour was the trick to making it work for me. It's also helped use up lots of random left over pieces because I can usually find enough other things in the same colour from other collections or manufacturers.

Hehe, I watched Jennifer McGuire's organisation video yesterday and thought that, if I had a) so much stuff and b) such great organisation, I'd never get anything done. I'd just sit and play with putting it all into ROYGBIV order!! She's amazing in so many ways!

I'm all over the place. Generic embellishments are stored in gallon bags by color. If I have a lot of a theme, embellishments are stored in Iris Cases (labeled). If I have just a few of a theme, it's stored in a sheet protector in a basket inside of my Expedit. Letter stickers, words on paper, word stamps, etc... are stored in an Iris Case (not by color).
Paper and cardstock are organized the same way. Stored in vertical paper holders with labels.
I use a lot of scrap cardstock. It is stored by color in another basket in my Expedit along with pattern paper of the same color.
Messy things like stickles and inkpads are stored in small three drawer plastic storage I got from Wal-Mart. I have a big tub of pens (mostly used for adult coloring books). I don't have colored pencils or markers for scrapbooking.
