Would you think that's an internal problem that Verizon would replace phone? Or something you file an ins claim for? DH phone wouldn't charge all night. Kept plugging charger in and would start beeping and flashing the message on screen to plug charger in. I say it's something he needs to take to Verizon. What say the peas?

Not sure who would handle it, but I hate the Samsung Galaxy phones for that! We had two that were barely a year old before the charging issues started. Galaxy 3's. We did not have insurance and they were off warranty.
Ended up just replacing them with something else.
I have several friends that have the same trouble. I would never get another one of these phones.

I have had charging issues with my S3, but it has been the charger and not the phone. It does not like the cheap cables that you can buy at the checkout stand of most convenience stores.

I had an S3, had no trouble charging it. I loved that phone. It got crushed so I had to upgrade to the S5, and the battery on this thing is great.
If Verizon won't help with your S3, take a pin and try digging inside the port to see if there is any lint or dust in there that's interfering with the charger. I fixed my DH's iPhone by doing that. I was sorry of afraid I might damage something, but when Verizon wouldn't help,I thought I might as well give it a try. Voila! Phone magically charges again. There was a lot of lint in there that I had to dig out that couldn't be seen. I think men run into this problem more often because they tend to run around with phones in pockets, while women more often have them in a purse.
ETA: I'm assuming he's tried more than one charger.

I have to replace my charging cable occasionally. Those micro USB connectors are very fragile and wear out fairly quickly. Go to Radio Shack and get a new cable--you don't need a new wall charger, just the cable. I got a cheap one from Amazon and it wore out very quickly. The one from Radio Shack seems to be holding up pretty well. Also, make sure he doesn't pull on the cord to unplug it.

Yes!! I'm on my third Samsung Galaxy because of the battery port. It's my only issue with this phone! This one started giving me the same issue off and on last week. Ugh.

I had issues with mine and it needed sending off for repair, but they fixed it and it's been fine since. I would have said contact your phone provider first?

My BIL's phone (galaxy S3) quit charging last month and then suddenly just died. Wouldn't turn on at all. He took it to Verizon and they did replace it (with a refurb model) but they couldn't turn it on or get any data from it. So I would suggest backing it up ASAP just in case.

type of cable made no difference for us. We tried everything. Brand new factory cables, cheap ones, expensive ones... nothing worked. She finally bought an extra battery and would charge and swap batteries. A real pain

If it is under warranty, then it is a Verizon issue. If it isn't, probably an insurance issue, but no harm in checking with verizon.
Charging ports are sensitive. Making steam the cord isn't hanging down while chraging, thereby pulling on the port, and unplugging carefully can extend the life of the port
