We aren't huge travelers but we get away a couple times a year. I was reading a blog post about what place have you made your own. I haven't ever thought about it that way but it made me wonder if others do. I am not talking about buying property but a place that you just love and feels like your place. A place that you go to over and over and it feels like home. For 5-6 years Destin was our place. We loved it. I had dreamed of taking my boys and once we went we found a way to go back many more times. We loved it! We would still go visit again but we got to a place that we wanted to try something new. Here is a Link to blog post that made me think about this topic. It may not work (I haven't done a link yet on the new boards so if not I will try to fix it) but give me a minute. Our family camp (East Texas) is our place currently for our family. We have gone for 9 summers and share it with a few dozen families each year. We love it. It is where my kids will remember spending a week each summer and a lot of great memories being made. We love the ocean and so that always feels like our place. Each coast looks different but when I am at the ocean I feel at home. I feel like it is my place and I am so glad to be back. My moms family growing up had a cottage in Upstate NY. That was their place. They eventually sold the cottage but it was the family for decades and where summers were spent. Do you have a place you have made your own?

Door County. Very end of the thumb in northern Wisconsin, Gills Rock, is where we rent a house each summer. No ocean, but Green Bay on one side and Lake Michigan on other is pretty close. Then spend our time all over some of our favorite spots up there and try to check out something new each time. Kids are teens now and I've been wondering how much longer it will last once they go off to college and on their own. Since we rent around the same time every year (owners check with us first before renting to anyone else) maybe if I keep renting it, and consider it an "open house" for kids and friends etc, they would keep coming. Going to miss those times when they go on their own.

Walt Disney World is ours. We don't go every year, maybe every 2-3 years. Even though the kids are getting older (they're 12 and 13 now), they still love it and can't wait until our next trip. We've tried different resorts, but we think we found our "home" last time at Port Orleans Riverside.
Locally, we have a state park about 45 minutes away. We go there about 5 times a year to picnic and hike. There's also a lake where we can swim and paddleboat. It makes a very nice day trip.

There is a church retreat in the Texas hill country that rents houses and hotel rooms called Mo Ranch where we love to have week long family reunions. There are lots of activities: a river with rapids, canoes, swimming pool, rope course, hiking wild animals and a lots of safe acres for the kids to run loose. We have 12 grandchildren and it is everyone's favorite place to go with family. There is one huge house that sleeps about 30.

We go to Christina Lake, British Columbia every summer ... it is really an undiscovered jewel The best part is that we meet up with a number of other families every year at the same time and it is so freaking fun ... we spend our days on the beach or on our boat and then the evenings sitting around visiting ... totally relaxing ... this year we also spent one day going on a wine tour which was excellent - we visited nine wineries The owners of the complex where we stay have become true friends and we book the same condo each year ... I love it

We go to a dude ranch in Wyoming; have done for 13 years. My daughter worked there in college, too. She can't wait until her babies are big enough to go.

Pensacola. I've only been there a few times in my life, but when I step onto that beach, I feel like I'm coming home.

We go to the same resort in northern Minnesota every summer. My dad and brother have places there and the resort is right next door. We went there when I was a kid and now my kids look forward to it every summer. We boat out to the same island every year to swim and picnic and the kids love having an entire island to themselves. We fish and four wheel and the kids can drive the golf carts around. We are a city family, so it's nice to relax and do different activities every year.

I go to Silver Lake, Michigan. My mil's grandparents built a cottage there around 1910 and their families have been going every summer. I immediately loved the place for many reasons, but especially for the family tradition. When dd2 was a baby my inlaws bought another cottage for their four sons and their families, which allowed me to spend more time in Michigan. About ten years ago, dh and I bought our own cottage next door to the one we co-own, and my inlaws bought another one that is on the water and a half block away. I LOVE my cottage! Even though it's in a neighborhood, our property is surrounded by large trees (much larger than what we have at home) and I feel like I'm in the woods, but still near people (I don't like feeling isolated). My favorite thing in the world is to sit and read either on my shady deck or lieing on the daybed in the living room. Another big bonus, the weather is much more comfortable than a Texas summer.

for my husband and I it's New Orleans. We're taking the kids for Mardi Gras this year, their first visit ever and we're hoping they fall in love with it too. For my family (parents, siblings, kids) it's BethPage Camp Resort We bought a cabin there and my mom stays most of the summer, she had 5 of the grandkids with her for 6 weeks this year...they LOVE it there!

The Staff Club at the company I work for owns a beach house in a coastal town called Inverloch, and we go there regularly. I'm sure DS thinks that it is "our" house and not just one that we rent every now and then! If I had the money I would buy my own holiday house down there for sure. Especially now that DD is a member of the surf lifesaving club there. I love it. We have definitely made it "our place".

Miami Beach! We didn't get around to vacationing until we were in our 40s and now we go every year. It is so exciting for us to go there because we dreamed about it for years and years. Now our kids are out of the house we can go on vacations. We love it there so much we may move there when we retire. We know the entire layout of the city and where everything is and how to get around. This is our first vacation together alone. We have also now started to go to Chicago every year but we take the grand kids with us there.

Pensacola. I've only been there a few times in my life, but when I step onto that beach, I feel like I'm coming home. It's the best feeling isn't it. My DS who is 14 when we first entered Door Co this year... that's A LOT coming to a teenager esp. a boy, who aren't usually so sentimental- let along sharing it. Almost brought tears to my eyes. (and will now if I don't stop thinking about it)

Ours is Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. We go for 2 weeks every July/August. It's my favorite place to be. I always say it's the best R&R&R money can buy - the perfect combination of rest, relaxation, and recreation. Plenty to do. If you want. Some days we go go go; others we sit on the beach and lounge our day away. We've gone since my youngest was 2 years old and she's 11 now. We've gone when I was still married to their dad, we've gone alone, we've gone with great friends. It's seen us through the napping years when you couldn't keep your eyes off kids around the water to now when they can tube and kneeboard on their own. We have our traditions and always try a few new things each year as well. So, so much fun!

One particular lot in Devils Lake Park in Wisconsin. It has to be that tent site. I'm totally particular about that site!

A small resort in Maui called Napili Kai beach resort. It's my favorite place on earth, on a beautiful, calm bay overlooking the islands of Molokai and Lanai. It's not a high rise or a 4 star kind of place but it's so nice and perfect for families. We've had 7 family reunions there and plan to go back next year too, when we were there this summer there were 17 of us between the ages of 16 months and 88...4 generations! We are scattered all over the country, with one nephew living in Japan, so it's very special to be able to get together.

A resort in southern Portugal. We've been going for about 30 years (along with over travel) and have seen it grow from a little known place to a very desirable and expensive destination with some of the best beaches in Europe. We SO should have bought a home there in the early days

Thank you for your responses. I enjoyed reading them. It also gives me some good ideas to check out for future trips. I think that we tend to find traveling stressful it is a new (we could never do Amazing Race!) and so for the place we go back to many times it removed that element. I know not everyone feels that with travel and I do some trips more than others but I think besides tradition that is one aspect of it for us. There are new places we want to go so we try to branch out and some years can.

For us it was Osoyoos, British Columbia, in the Okanagon. We took our boys there every summer (plus some long weekends).
We stayed at a hotel right on the beach, swimming pools, lake, jet skis. We've been many times since the boys have grown up, just not every summer like we used to. Mostly they have been weekend trips with them, their girlfriends or their friends.
And now just last week our oldest son went there with his fiancée for a week.

Growing up "our place" was on Martha's Vineyard. We couldn't afford the pricey hotels there, so we camped. It felt like a second home. I've only been 3 times as an adult, but it still feels like home.
With our family we've gone to Sea Pines in Hilton Head at least 10 times over the last 20 years and we have made it our place. So much so that now my 16- and 21-year-old DDs think its getting a little boring. DH and I are secretly excited that in 2 years we might be able to sneak away to Hilton Head without while they are off at college or on their own.

My sister and her family found Bozeman to be their place. After years of going and loving it they decided 2 years to take the plunge and move there. They love it! I do dream of going for an extended time o the ocean. Sometimes when I see the rental prices for a month (during off season) I think man that is great deal! One day I will do it.

For our famity it's Ft Walton Beach, FL, specifically Okaloosa Island. Same complex every year the first week of August! For just the two of us, it's the Excellence Resort in Punta Cana, DR. We go each year in February.

My in-laws rent beachfront condos along the Florida panhandle for a month at a time during the off-season. October and November have fabulous weather and they can stay for an entire month for less than the price of a week during spring break. Put it on your bucket list!
