My all time favorite is The Family Nobody Wanted. It is about a pastor and his wife post WW2 who end up adopting 12 mixed race children. This was just not done at that time. I first read it in 5 th grade and bought a copy of it in a Scholastic book order. I have had that book ever since then.
The Little House series. My 3rd grade teacher did the first 3 books as read aloud a to us each day. When I found our there were more in the series, I insisted that my Mom had to take me to the library to get the next one. I have read them multiple times over the years.
The Harry Potter series. I wish more authors wrote such good stories that appeal to both kids and adults.
There are so many more that I could list, but these would have to be at the top.

100 Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - read it back in the 70's and reread it occasionally. Thank you, hutchfan , for this thread. We have it occasionally and I often get a good list out of it. You are very welcome, I am making a list too of books I need to read from this board.

I can hardly pick a favorite.
The Bible is first.
A few others:
A Thousand Splendid Suns The Nightingale The Book Thief To Kill a Mockingbird A Prayer for Owen Meany
I have to say that Charlotte's Web forever instilled the love of reading in me when my teacher read it to our class when I was in fourth grade.

My absolute favorite book is East of Eden by Steinbeck. Mine too! I read a lot and have a lot of "favorites", but East of Eden stands out as my all-time favorite. Other favorites are: Too Kill a Mockingbird Farewell to Arms Snowflower and the Secret Fan Wintergarden by Kristin Hannah This is not a novel, but I love it anyway--Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh I guess that's enough favorites. LOL

This is an easy one for me: The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay.
I even bought the children's version for my DD to read when she was in primary school. To my dismay she didn't really enjoy it. I was just thinking yesterday (after seeing his widow post something on his Facebook page) that it's about time I read it again.

These books have had an incredible impact on my life.
The first three are far and above my favorite. I still get mad thinking how bad the Despereaux movie was and how the screenwriters missed the entire point of the book! And I think that pretty much anything The Little Prince had to say can be used in my office every day!
Harriet the Spy just had a giant impact because all I ever wanted to do was know everything (aka spy on people), and she did it! I didn’t like the ending (she got caught!), but I loved the story. Player Piano was my first Kurt Vonnegut book. It was brilliant and visionary. How to Learn Anything Quickly is what every parent should read. It embraces the differences in learning and stops trying to stick us all in one box.
The Little Prince by Antoine de St-Exupéry Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery The Tale of Despereaux by Kate di Camillo Sophie’s Choice by William Styron Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut How to Learn Anything Quickly by Ricki Linksman

The Sheltering Sky, by Paul Bowles. I have never read a book where I felt quite like that while reading. I love his writing in general, although it has never motivated me to want to spend time in heat or sand.

Anne of Green Gables and 9 Stories, I could read them both over and over and over again. ETA I keep hoping someone will post their favorite book they HAVEN’T read. I think mine would be The Wind in the Willows. Solely based on my love for Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride in DL. I have read that book probably half a dozen times in my adult life. I have an odd sense of humor and would have to say that for an adult book, Sh*t My Dad Says, was so dang funny that I am picking it. Second favorite is Pride and Prejudice.

I'll assume you didn't mean "which is your ONE favorite book"... that would be an impossible question. lol. So I'll list a few of my very favorites, ones that I reread (often many times):
-- Lord of the Rings series -- Harry Potter -- Tripod trilogy (old, and one of my favorites from teen years) -- Mitford series -- The Stand -- Watchers (horror, and I read only the chapters about the dog, skipping the others) -- Laura Ingalls Wilder

I was thinking, trying to think of a book that would be my favourite, that I don’t actually have one/any! I work in a library and read at least 110 adult books for pleasure every year, plus all the kids fiction and picture books that I go through—if I spent time rereading, I wouldn’t have time for all those awesome new books!! So my favourite book would probably be the next one 😉
(I did enjoy A Man Called Ove more than most other books I’ve read in the last couple years ...)

I remember a movie was made about the book but it did not do the book justice. Swoon. I just love this book.
