I spent ages last night on Amazon deleting books from my Kindle. I realized it didn't work to try to do it through the Kindle itself, so I went to the Manage Content and Devices thing on Amazon and worked on it that way. When I would hit delete, a window would come up that the book was queued for deletion, I would hit OK, and it would disappear from my book list.
Partway through the process, the screen wiped and asked me to sign into my account again. When I did, ALL the books were back. I deleted a couple more to see what would happen, they were marked queued for deletion, and I went to bed. Today all the books are still there. They never did disappear from my actual Kindle library, because I was looking at it as I deleted to make sure I wasn't deleting anything I wanted.
I'm at my wits' end. I just want to tidy this thing up and get rid of a bunch of books so it's easier to look at my library and find what I still want/need to read.
Any suggestions?

Huh. I delete books about once a month and have never had that problem.
Try signing out, then closing that window. Then go back into Amazon and log back in. Then try deleting a book.
If that doesn’t work, call Amazon. They may be able to help.

If you still haven’t been able to delete your books, try this (courtesy of a pea) Sign into your Amazon account and go to content and devices. Click on the second row of boxes beside the book you want to delete (the Actions row) A box will pop up with options, one of which is delete.
Hope that works for you.

Won't this delete it from your account, not just your kindle?

Mine is one of the first Fires.
All that needs done on it is hold a finger on the cover and it will ask delete from device or from the carousel. From the shelf, hold your finger on it until the pop up asks if you want to delete from device.
