My parents weren’t really picture takers. I’m thinking of doing a few layouts about my early childhood using journaling and some embellishments. I’d love suggestions and ideas since I’ve never done a page without photos. Thanks.

There are a few pages like this that I want to make, but since I like having pictures, I'm going to use ones I find online.
Since I don't have pictures for that time we picked strawberries, I'll use someone else's picture of strawberries. Or that beach in the 70s, I'm sure I can find a photo online, even though I won't be in it.

I have not done anything like this so take my suggestions with a grain of salt.
1. Themed products. Treat your journaling like a photo in terms of your design and theme your products about the story you want to tell. 2. What Msliz said. Find a photo related to what you want to talk about. If it's about a vacation, you could probably even use current postcards of that place to help tell the story. 3. If it's about a tradition or something that you've done as an adult, you can use more recent photos and can start the journaling along the lines of 'This <insert event here> reminds me of how my family used to do <insert event here>.' Then go on to tell the memory you want to capture.
ETA: If the memories you want to scrapbook about are events where you had relatives in attendance, you could also call them up and ask them if they have photos from it that they wouldn't mind letting you borrow to copy.

There have been some lovely nostalgic lines that could be a base for a page like this. Graphic 45 has some lovely ones. I have an older Storytime line by We R Memory Keepers. If your page has lots of graphics you just need to add a bit of journaling.
I guess the other way you could go would be with art journaling style?

I've done several pages like this. I usually make my journalling the focus and either use that paper I love that never works with my photos (we all have those papers, right?) or use themed embellishments.
Like a previous poster - I also will look for photos or postcards that fit the page even if they aren't of me/the event in particular.

There are a lot of instances that I don't have my own photos of my memories. I find the internet to be this amazing treasure trove of photos of the same things, and places that I've been to or remember. Seriously, Google is your best friend.

I have done this many times. One of the things you can do is get images off the computer, especially of places. But even if it's an event like Christmas, you can perhaps have pictures of some ornaments that used to be on the tree, or close ups of things reminiscent of the memory you are going to write about. When I did a picture about gymnastics, I did a paperkins type thing (that's how long ago I did it) and dressed it to look like me in my leotard. I found a photo online of a bike like mine and wrote about learning to ride. An amusement park we sometimes went to long closed and no photos of us there - I found old photos online of the park in operation.
The other thing I have done that is a bit more difficult is I have scanned in fabrics that evoke a memory, like a tablecloth my mom used every Christmas. I may not have any photos of the table but the tablecloth is still around.

I think this is a great opportunity. You are not limited to coordinating your papers and embellishments to specific colors the way you would if you wanted to match photos. You can use anything you like.
I would treat the journaling itself like a photo, such as for a one picture, one page layout. Then decorate and embellish around it. Or you can divide the journaling into photo sizes and treat the journal blocks like photos for a layout sketch.
I'd love to see what you come up with. Please share your layouts when you are done.

I've thought about doing this as well. And my solution was gonna be to find some type of photos that relate to the story I'm trying to tell. Like my love for rainbow brite and other 80's toys, I will just find photos online. You could also just use any photos of yourself from that time period and tell the story, not necessarily the exact photos that go with the story.
Good luck!

I did one page like this. Our grandchildren's other grandpa took them to a breakfast on a farm event. I just used themed products and typed out the story. I hope it will trigger happy memories some day when they look at their scrapbook.

I knew I had done a few photo-free layouts, so I went to my YouTube channel and checked it out. I've actually done more than a few: 17! You can check out the playlist here.

Old magazines, especially National Geographic, and Reminisce. You can also google any year and or topic.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did go online at one point to see if I could get pictures of things like my grade school or church but both have been remodeled. However there’re are plenty of pictures of Disneyland, the beach we used to go to, and some Los Angeles landmarks I remember. thracian, I checked out a couple your YouTube videos and you have some good ideas. I’ll look at some more later. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did go online at one point to see if I could get pictures of things like my grade school or church but both have been remodeled. On facebook, my hometown has a town history page, and lots of residents and former residents have contributed photos. Maybe there's a similar page for the place where you grew up? Or you could even contact the church directly or your town's historical society. Best of luck to you!

msliz, I grew up in Los Angeles somthat probably wouldn’t work for me. But you sis start me thinking. A history of Los Angeles layout would be interesting. And since I was born in the Hollywood area I could so one on that. Thanks!

I've started doing an album of growing up in the 70's. I do have quite a few photos but have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to things I owned but don't have photos of. So far- dolls I owned the record player shaped like an UFO - yes I actually found a photo of the one we owned! vintage avon bottles terrarium in the shape of a hippo! toys and games we owned I wore a one shouldered black lurex top with red satin pants to a high school dance - found separate photos of very similar pieces and will journal about the night. I even found a copy of a novel my mum bought me for Christmas when I was 11! I just put in 70's to Pinterest and follow other peoples boards. Most of my photos are of things I had totally forgotten about! My best find- when I was 11 for some reason I wore a red, enamel turtle hair pin on one side and a yellow goldfish pin on the other. I have a blurry photo of me wearing them but managed to find some pictures of the clips.(for sale on etsy but sadly already sold- I would have so bought them!!) Luckily I have lots of 70 themed scrapbook paper so I can use that for the "only journaling" layouts I end up doing. Please do come back and show us some finished layouts! Corinne

flickr is another site I use when I am looking for images of something I don't have a photo of. I'm in the camp of looking for an image that helps your story--whether of a location, toy, outfit, something with the right "feel" as you remember it.

I like the idea of treating your journaling spot as a picture. Other ideas I have: 1. Do you have memorabilia like pictures you drew as a kid or event tickets you can use? 2. Do you have physical things from your childhood (a teddy bear, blanket, etc.) that you can take a picture of now and include those pictures in your layouts? 3. Include a map of your town. I am sure you can find creative ways to make scrapbook layouts without pictures or any of the above as well, but I did a couple searches for inspiration and it's hard to find!

I love the ideas here. I would add that maybe you can find photos online of some of your favorite places to get food? Maybe there was a special burger place or taco or hotdog joint where your family liked to go? Or if there was an ice-cream shop and you liked to get the same thing each time you could scrap about that.
