I have removed the tiny embellishment stamps from sentiment stamps and added them to similar sets for filing. Now I’m toying with breaking apart the phrases to to make them easier to locate. Has anyone done this and how do you like it? I have tried the Evernote route and though I like it for images I don’t care for it with the sentiments.

While I think it could be a great idea, my OCD would never allow it to happen.

While I think it could be a great idea, my OCD would never allow it to happen. That’s what I’m facing now! I just seperated the packs with mixed phrases and I’m going “UGHHHHH”!

hmmm...i am in the midst of stamp organizing and hadn't thought of doing this....how about you create a file with all the sentiments typed up, and which set they're with. That way, you can do a search for 'happy birthday' phrases and then easily find it? ideally, you'd include an image of the stamped sentiment so you'd know what it looked like. just thinking out loud

It worked great for awhile until I kept forgetting to add new stamps in.

I'm not following how you want to break them apart. Do you mean put all your "Happy Birthdays" together, all "Thanks" together... I love EN for sentiments. In fact, that's what I mostly look up. I have all sentiment phrases as tags, so all I have to do is search for "happy" and all sentiment phrases with happy (day, birthday, valentines, st patricks, etc) appear. Then I can click on the different sets to see which style I want to use. My OCD won't let me separate sets. I have to keep the sets together.

I don't think I could ever break up a set intentionally. Storing single stamps that aren't part of a set I could manage, but the idea of breaking something up is just something my mind about explodes just thinking about.
If you think there is even the SLIGHTEST chance you'd want to purge, you'd need to sell them in sets...broken up stamp sets do not sell well AT ALL. If I were to even remotely conceptualize doing something like this, the very first thing I would do would be catalog photos (either take a picture or save one from the internet) of what the initial set was so I could put it back together if I wanted to sell off some sets OR more likely...I didn't like it, lol.

While I exclusively incorporate stamping into scrapping, am not a cardmaker, stamper, or mixed media artist, & do not seek to be published, I separate sets - whether wood mounted or unmounted rubber or clear - as necessary. Note I also donate images/phrases that I won't use from sets, rather than waste valuable storage space on them.
I like opening a drawer (ie stamps are stored in a flat file) & seeing all of my options together, rather than spend time perusing sets in every drawer before choosing a stamp to use. I routinely keep an image of every set (with donated stamps marked out), so I can reassemble those that have been split up if I wish.
HTH & happy organizing!

This was an issue for me when I began the task of organizing stamps (like 3+ years ago). I have a lot of PTI sets and they typically have very different sentiments in one collection, for example there could a "With Sympathy" stamp with a flower set that also has birthday and thank you sentiments. I wanted a way to know where all my sentiments were without breaking up sets, so I came up with a symbol key. I used webdings in a word doc and made my labels with collection name and manufacturer, then put the symbols in the corner so I would know which sets had what type of sentiments. Sorry, this is hard to explain! I've actually been working on a blog post and youtube video to share, and hopefully will have it posted up tomorrow so you can see.
Even though it took me a bit to get it together, I have to say it has worked really well. I've been using my stamps more overall bcz I can clearly find things and see things labeled that I didn't before. You could probably do something similar with colors or numbering, as long as you have a key and know what they stand for.

I don’t like breaking up sets if they’re clear stamps only because they store better on those cards they come on. Whenever I get a new stamp I try it out and save the image. That gets cataloged and I store by catagory. What I started doing with the sets is making two images. One goes with the set and the other by categories with a note telling me where the stamp is stored. If the sets is all phrases no problem but if it’s mostly flowers or whatever and a few phrases my method comes in handy.

I am OCD with a few areas of my life. I have allowed myself to let go of some things if it makes my life easier. If I could find a way to store the stamps (like in a large clear Stampendous case), I think having like stamps would be beneficial.

OK, I think I figured out a system for now.
After putting the stamp sets back together, I restamped my inventory pages separating all like phrases into columns, i.e. happy birthday print (L/M/S), script and so on. I attached a number to each sentiment set before hand so i could write that number next to each stamped image. Now I can in one glance see all my happy birthday stamps and easily pick the size and style I need, go to the sentiment section in my bins and find the number envelop I need. With EN, I was not able to compare the phrases side by side like I can with my notebook. This is really handy when trying to find the right stamp to fit a small space.
Any stamps that were part of a set of images I removed and made new backing sheets from Duralar to place them on. Those sheets also got a number to reference. I also stamped the cardstock insert so I had a better view of each stamp on the duralar. Since I save all the original packaging from every set, I can still reassemble broken apart sets for resale. I have also stored my unmounted rubber stamps this way.
Mind you that it took me all afternoon to just do my birthday, hello and sympathy stamps. I still have a long way to go, but in the long run I think this is a system I can easily maintain. I am still working on logging all my sets into EN, which I like to use when shopping, or identification. There are merits to both systems.

aeryn kelly, an old 2peas member who I think went to paperclippings forum did this. She separated all her stamps into like with like instead of keeping sets together. She has a video showing it here. I so want to do this, but I also want to know which set they come from. I'm glad you found a solution that will work for you.
