Life threw me a terrible reminder how important they can be despite being a bit of a inconvenience. I witnessed a terrible automobile accident this morning and the young driver was thrown from her vehicle as it flew up an embankment and rolled in the air. She was alive when I last saw her, but I don't think she'll ever walk again. She was not wearing her seatbelt. Please don't forget to buckle up. Please.

A young gal was killed a few days ago while driving. She lost control. No seat belt and they believe she was texting. So senseless...

Oh no. I'm so sorry you had to witness that accident. Seatbelts are a soapbox issue for me.

That's terrible. I'm sorry that you had to see that. Talk to someone if you need to. Witnessing a terrible event like that can leave some scars that need help in healing.

Many years ago back when everyone thought seatbelts were optional I saw a tv show with a young man in a wheelchair. He was in a car accident and was a quadriplegic because of it. Couldn't move below his neck and needed total care. He said he wouldn't be sitting in that chair if he had worn a seatbelt. I've worn a seatbelt ever since.
Another PSA: if you ever drive an international student/visitor, make sure they realize they must wear a seatbelt. In many countries seatbelts are still optional, especially for those riding in back seats. You need to check that they are wearing one for every trip because they don't remember from trip to trip, even on the same day.

I'm amazed this is still an issue. I don't know anyone who doesn't use a seatbelt. When my son was in a roll-over accident in Las Vegas about 5 years ago (it was in a company owned van that was driving them from an event out in the desert back to their hotel) he and all the other 8 passengers had their belts on and it saved their lives.
I'm sorry you had to witness something so horrific.

I just watched a video on instagram of 3 girls driving in a car during daylight, not drunk, singing along and no one was wearing a seatbelt. I was shocked!

Ahhh what a terrible thing. Yes, yes yes to your PSA.
I think I mentioned here, and I know my fb pea friends know, about my friend’s husband who was in a terrible accident. 3 men in a car. One was checked over and released from the hospital the same day. My friend’s husband had multiple injuries, including 3 fractured vertebrae in his neck. He was walking within a week and a short 7 weeks later, he’s already out of the neck brace and starting PT! The guy who chose not to wear a seatbelt didn’t survive. 😔

My MIL had a big fear of seat belts, she witnessed a friend burn to death in a car because of the seatbelt jamming. But I had 4 little kids that were watching everything the adults did so I made her wear one in the car. We also have a special hammer in my car that can break glass and cut seat belts if needed, which appeased her a bit.
Many many years ago there was an accident in GA, 6 girls in a car toilet papered a house of a classmate and the dad chased them down in his car. The girls crashed and the only survivor was the driver. None of the girls were wearing seat belts and there were more kids in the car than belts (I think it was a 4 passenger car). The whole thing went to trial not only for the girl but the dad that chased them. One stupid mistake led to many more and now both of them have to live with being responsible for the deaths of 5 girls.
Our classic car didn't have seat belts and if it didn't originally have them you don't have to put them in but my husband installed 3 shoulder belts in the car. Thankfully it has a full roll cage so we had places to put shoulder belts in the back dash or it would have been just lap belts which are also dangerous.

We lost a beatiful 15 year old girl from our church in October. She wasn’t buckled in and her brother went off the road on their way to school.

Just another way being stupid and not wearing a seat belt can hurt people. So sorry you had to witness that. Even reading it is upsetting, so please take care of yourself as you continue to process it.

I can only imagine how scary that was for you to witness.
BIL is paralyzed waist-down because he was in a single car accident in which he was drunk and not wearing a seatbelt. As much as I hate to do it, I use him as an example to my boys of the dangers of drinking and driving as well as not wearing a seatbelt. Knowing someone personally can have a bigger impact than all of the warnings in the world. Neither one will start the car unless we all have belts on. I hope they keep that habit.

I hope bil would be giving the same message. Before I was married, my dad was in a single car accident drunk driving in broad daylight. He spent months recovering in the hospital, and many more months recovering at home. When he went back to work, his supervisor, who was a longtime friend, had the bumper from his car waiting on his desk. My dad lost strength and ability after his accident. You bet your bippy I have used his accident as an up close and personal lesson for my kids not to drink and drive. I’ve talked to them about the everyday effects his drinking/alcoholism had on me. I want them to connect those dots.

The absolute maddest I ever got at my daughters, was when one of them did not wear their seatbelt because there were not enough in the car. Both girls got a punishment, because one watched and one did. They were not allowed to drive anywhere but to and from school for two months and I reminded them of it constantly. The year my girls got their license, five teenagers were killed in tiny car accidents on roads with speed limits no higher than 40 miles an hour because they weren't wearing their seatbelts.

I'm sorry you had to witness such a horrible accident.
My kids are young adults and they are really good about always buckling up. I fear they text and drive, although they tell me they don't.

I am so sorry you witnessed that. I have to say that in arguing with libertarians who are opposed to seatbelt laws, one of the things I always point out to them is that their "free choice" affects a lot of people in ways that leave indelible scars -- witnessing someone get severely injured or dying, and/or being emergency personnel dealing with that, is horrifying.

My parents turned it into a game when we were younger, who could get in the car and buckle the fastest. It totally stuck for me and my kids know we won't move unless they're buckled. My dad was always the hardest one to convert, on long drives he unbuckles for comfort. However, the best thing that ever happened was the dinging noise that's in cars now when you're not buckled. It annoys him so freaking much, he has no choice but to stay buckled. Thank you whoever thought of that little idea.

My next door neighbor, a young father, passed away when he lost control of his car and hit the embankment. His wife was with him and was thankfully wearing her seatbelt. He was thrown from his vehicle and prounouced dead at the scene. His wife had multiple injuries, but survived. It was so sad when it happened. So tragic that something as simple as wearing your sealtbelt can prevent such tragedy.

That is heartbreaking.
29 years ago I was rear ended. I was not wearing my seatbelt (didn't want to wrinkle my blouse). I deal with the fallout from that decision every single day.
Wear your seatbelt.

I'm so sorry you had to witness this. DH lost a 25 year old employee a few years ago when he was thrown from a truck in an accident that everyone else walked away from with minor bruises. It was one of the most heartbreaking memorials I've ever attended. His twin still works for the company and is just not the same person. A few years ago I jokingly said to a carload of girlfriends "is everyone buckled?" as I started driving away and was stunned to have one of my backseat passengers say she only belted up when sitting in the front. I was raised by parents who didn't put the car in gear until we were all buckled (way before it was the law), so am the one screaming at DH for taking off before we are buckled. And, FTR, he didn't start buckling up until we had kids. idahopea, that's an interesting reminder about international students. There was a horrific local accident that involved international students where 3 were killed and I wondered if it was teen invincibility or a cultural difference that they weren't wearing seatbelts.

I now always wear my seat belt.. it's just habit for the most part. Once and awhile I will find myself usually within a block of my house without it on.. usually because I was doing something else or removing my coat to drive.. I slap that sucker on so fast...
Years ago.. I would say 23 years, I would wear mine but not faithfully.. just was starting to try to get in the habit. I was driving to work and some guy rear ended me pretty hard. When the police came and I gave my statement and such, the cop told me it was probably good I wasn't wearing because in the kind of accident I was in that it would have cause way more injuries. But I never give anyone that excuse not to wear a seat belt. Ever.

It amazes me that people still do not wear seatbelts.
But kind of not. Because every day people make willfully stupid decisions that can and will have negative impacts on themselves and others. Starting smoking, driving drunk, driving while texting, choosing to take that first hit of heroin/meth/crack.
But also kind of not because I have seen people I would have otherwise thought were reasonably intelligent not buckle up, not buckle up their kids, etc. I raised my girls that the car did not move if anyone was unbuckled. I told them that if they were ever with other adults and the adult did not have enough belts for them, they were to get out of the car. They had to do that several times. The worst was a mom in the neighborhood who invited my dd to an event and I had specifically asked if she had enough seat belts for everyone. She assured me she did. When my dd went to get into the car and get a seat, she learned that she was expected to sit on the floor. She insisted on getting out and the mother said, "Damn, I didn't realize you were serious."
As they got older, I explained that another consideration was liability as a driver. I told them when they drove, to NEVER allow anyone to stay in the car who refused to belt up. More than once, they had an argument and/or had to kick people out of cars because of the refusal. In fact, oldest dd just told me recently more details about one time she offered to drive her car on a college field trip which was a class requirement. One of the guys in her car refused to buckle up and only agreed after she said the car was not moving without it. Then, once they were on the highway going 75mph, he gleefully released his seat belt and cackled, "Whatcha gonna do about it now, bitch?" She ended up leaving him at the next exit.
