I guess it's all a futile question now. Mom fell a week ago and broke her hip. While hospitalized it was discovered her blood was very low, needing several transfusions prior to surgery to fix it. they then discovered with a ct scan what was thought to be a small section of the bowel bleeding, they went in to fix it but found her filled with colon cancer. The small section that was bleeding was removed but the rest of it was too far spread. Pathology needs to type it before we know if it's a fast acting aggressive kind, or a slow moving kind. I'm told she could go in three months if it's aggressive or she could live for years if it's slow growing. Chemo would likely cause more bad sideeffects than provide benefits. Today she couldnt even remember why she was in hospital. Im stunned. I’m so sorry this has happened to y’all. My granny and my grandma experienced some forms of dementia right after surgery. My grandma lost words, telling me to blow the bed, when she meant lower it. Like the dutiful granddaughter I was, I leaned over and blew on the bed. Grandma looked at me like I’d lost my mind. She finally made a hand motion to show me what she actually meant. Yeah, I felt dumb, but I still repeated it to her dr and he told me that it might take as long as 6 months for her to go back to normal. Granny had emergency surgery when her previously undiscovered ovarian cancer grew to cover and collapse her bowel. After the surgery, she had a number of times where she acted completely irrationally. It was very scary. Granny did recover her faculties faster than Grandma, but she never really remembered much of her time in the hospital. Both of my grands experienced dementia-like symptoms when they had UTIs. Out of the blue they would start talking to the dead. It’d make the hair on your neck stand up when they’d casually speak to their long dead mothers. Both recovered when the infection was treated, but we kept an eye on them for any strangeness after that so we could catch it early. Marcy

I'm so sorry you're going through all of this theshyone It is never easy to take care of an elderly parent when the parent doesn't want to be taken care of. Obviously, to top that off, you have problems of your own and you worry about your kids. Ugh. I am just sending lots and lots of cyber hugs your way.

Thank you. We have an appointment set up with the cancer centre in June to discuss options. On Monday mom was moved to higher level care ward. One day at a time.
