Everything looks so....blah! Everything looks soooo different and it's only been 15-16 years since the show was on. How vanilla the houses were. What did we expect them to do with $1000 in two days?
i used to love this show but now it seems too simple for me. I think Joanna and Chip spoiled me.

I haven't seen it yet. I was really hoping the show would focus more on the decor choices and why.
I feel like the new shows are all about knocking walls down now.

Well, it was only $1000, 2 days, and only a handful of skilled people. One that makes me laugh now that is comparable to Chip and Joann is Divine Design with Candice Olsen. I found reruns and it made me realize I'll probably laugh at Fixer Upper in 15 years.

I’m watching and it looks so incredibly tacky now! Compared to all the white and wood and clean stuff that’s trendy now!
I can’t believe it’s been so long since I was into this show but I watched it every day while the kids played!!

Tacky! That was the word I was looking for. I loved this show when it first came on. I can't believe it.

It drives me insane st how obsessed people are with open floor plans now! The other day I was reading a decor magazine and there was an article about how the tide is starting to turn back and they highlighted an updated popular house plan with a "semi" open floor plan. Personally, I dislike open floor plans due to the noise and the visual clutter of seeing too much at one time. This house and my last house were open floor plan because that is all we could find in the markets at the time. Plus my husband likes the open floor plan. Give me some freaking walls.

It drives me insane st how obsessed people are with open floor plans now I have one and I hate it. I hope if I move I remember how much I hate watching TV and listening to the dishwasher. Some rooms are meant to be separated. I never liked Trading Spaces because they never listened to the homeowner. I recall someone who had an all white home and they wanted color, so they painted everything from floor to ceiling and everything in between black. We had them do 2 homes nearby and the one homeowner wanted their bonus room made into a place for the daughters to hang out and instead they did the whole thing into a Ravens man cave. I know the other neighbor changed everything back as soon as they left.

I stopped using our dishwasher over a year ago because I could never remember to run it in the morning and it was so annoying at night! I always felt like trading spaces was like a “punkd: homeowners edition”! They always seemed to do something the homeowner didn’t want, no matter how pretty it might have been. If the person doesn’t like something then it shouldn’t be in their home.

I will watch this. I can't wait until the new episodes come on. I used to LOVE Trading Spaces back in the day.
The most awful episode was when Hildi stapled, yes STAPLED fake flowers on the homeowner's perfectly nice bathroom. Does anyone remember that episode? Or when she stuck hay, actually glued hay all over someone's living room.

The silk flowers were a very close second on why hildi should never be allowed to decorate. Ever. Not even her own house.

I remember watching that and thinking of all the dust that would accumulate on those flowers (and how the dust would probably get wet from steam in the bathroom and what a nightmare that would be.) I also remember reading an article after the fact about that bathroom and the homeowners were furious because there were thousands of staples which, when removed left thousands x 2 holes in the wall. If I recall correctly, they had to put up all new drywall due to all of the holes.

Anyone remember the fireplace lady who was so upset she couldn’t even be on camera?
Or the room with sand on the floor? If I’m remembering correctly the homeowners actually liked the sand! They thought it was beachy!

Wasn't it Doug that knew they didn't want the fireplace touched and went ahead anyway with his plan? I used to love the show, too, but only would have let Vern or Genevieve touch my house. All the shows back in the day were similar small budget and styles IIRC (Design on a Dime, Decorating Cents, etc.)

I liked trading spaces for maybe a season but probably not even that long. There were a few episodes where it seemed like some thought went into the projects, and they actually wanted to make a good space and have the homeowners happy. After that there were a few random episodes here or there that were good in terms of design but mostly not.
Then it went off the rails because they never listened to the home owners and the designers seemed to be trying to make the tackiest shit storm they could create. It wasn’t like watching a decorating show it was more like watching a train wreck. A contest to see who could do the wackiest tackiest most infuriating crap they could think of. So yea I watched it but not as if it was a design show- but more like just crafty sensationalism.
All I could remember thinking was why would I even think of hiring these designers?
I wonder which direction this re-boot will go? Design show? or shocking shit show?

Bad enough they didn't listen to your colour choices or whatever but who in the world staples flowers or hay to a wall? A real designer wouldn't do that. At least sponge painting was easy to get rid of if you don't like it or when you get tired of it when the trend changed.

I have been watching some of them. It is really dated. I remember back when it was on thinking I wouldn't want these people to decorate my house. Having a small budget doesn't mean you have to be tacky. I'm hoping they have a bigger budget on the new shows and that the decorators have better taste now.

What’s cracking me up watching re-runs is that the picture on the screen on some of the really old shows don’t fill my tv screen. The newest old ones do, but not the oldest. It’s comical how some of the stuff the designers (the respectable designers) did, I wanted so badly in my home. I was lucky to have a dh that was a painter and knew how to do all the different paint techniques like sponge painting, leathering, marbeling etc... (people paid big bucks for that stuff back then). But I wanted the tole painted vines near the ceiling (like Frank was great at) so badly. Lol! I would cringe to have it now.

What a douche move that was. I also remember an Air Force family that was on the show, and the designer (African American chick with super short hair) redid the entire space with camouflage. I thought the woman was going to cry. Holy hell, the wife was surrounded by military stuff all the time and all she wanted was a peaceful space. I was so pissed for her.

I used to love Trading Spaces. But, I always disliked the rooms Hildi and Doug did. I remember the one where Doug, I believe, used wine labels to redo the kitchen. The man was a pastor and did not drink. They said they would be taking them down. But the standout was the lady crying off camera about the fireplace, and the husband saying he just saw a lot of firewood.
