I never liked the show. When you do something that the homeowner specifically asked you NOT to do, you are a jackass.
I can't believe they brought it back. Why can't someone come up with an original idea?

I used to love Trading Spaces. But, I always disliked the rooms Hildi and Doug did. I remember the one where Doug, I believe, used wine labels to redo the kitchen. The man was a pastor and did not drink. They said they would be taking them down. But the standout was the lady crying off camera about the fireplace, and the husband saying he just saw a lot of firewood. Hildi, the most hated TS designer of them all, did the wine bottle label kitchen for the Pastor. *SMH* I felt sorry for the fireplace woman although I didn't think the new fireplace was that horrible. SaveSaveGlad you remembered it was Hildi. She and Doug always had the worst things in their rooms. I remembered those wine labels, but forgot it was her. It was such a strange way to decorate walls. I wonder how their design businesses did after doing designs like they did on Trading Spaces?

Does anyone remember when Hildi put cardboard up on all of the walls of a room? I've googled the heck out of it and can't come up with one picture! That to me was one of her worst- totally ruined all of the sheet rock!
I've watched some of a few episodes that have been on lately. They bored me. I can't believe that I used to love that show. And someone above is right, with the design styles we're used to seeing now $1000 is going to make for some tacky rooms.

now $1000 is going to make for some tacky rooms. I think the promo that I've seen on TV said $2000. But I'm sure we will see tacky!

I actually enjoyed watching the Retro episodes. I wouldn't DO any of the designs, but I was a big fan of the show back in the day and it was fun to watch. Frank was on a couple of the episodes I watched and he was always my favorite. I'm anxious to see the reboot and to see if Doug has changed at all . He was always such a pain in the ass, but for some reason I liked him.

Wake me up when they redo Changing Rooms, or at least rerun those. That was a fun show and although the designers were nuts, it was in a good way and they never did the hateful things Hildi or Doug did. Didn’t Hildi have a picture of herself painted for one house too?

I'm hoping for 'real' ideas and not tacky... it still can be fun but doesn't have to be stupid like hay or sand..
I always giggle when they do the fast forward of moving everything around... I totally forgot about that.

I will watch this. I can't wait until the new episodes come on. I used to LOVE Trading Spaces back in the day. The most awful episode was when Hildi stapled, yes STAPLED fake flowers on the homeowner's perfectly nice bathroom. Does anyone remember that episode? Or when she stuck hay, actually glued hay all over someone's living room. I remember both of those. Ugly ugly dust catchers. Lose-lose. I haven't read the whole thread, but I remember being mad about the den, they turned into a movie theatre. I think it had tiered seating. The family had not asked for a one-function room. Ugh. They started to do this nonsense so often, I suspect they thought it increased ratings, but it turned me off.

I used to love the show, but got frustrated when some designers (Doug and Hildi, especially) seemed to make it a goal to do exactly what they knew the homeowners did NOT want. It's as if they wanted to see how outrageous they could be and were taking up a challenge. For them it wasn't about doing something cool design-wise, but how they could create dramatic reactions.
I liked the work that Vern and Frank and Laurie did.
We will watch, to see what it's like now.

Some of those designers were so disrespectful to the homeowners. However, anyone who watched the show knew what they were getting into.

OK, I watched a retro episode last night and can't believe I used to watch this show regularly. Doug & Genevieve were the designers. Doug gave his team 3 couches that looked like they'd been abandoned on the side of the road to pick from and made a slip cover for it. The other couches were left in the driveway with a "free" sign on them. Genevieve update a white couch by adding a black fringe. In fairness, I did like most of what she did to the room and the team working on it hated the fringe. IIRC, Doug didn't even have any design experience when he did the show. I was looking for google to confirm this and came across this article (with photos) on some of the most unique makeovers. Flower & hay wall are in there, but I have no recollection of Horror Show kitchen or the Upside Down Room.

There was one episode where Genevieve stuck moss and twigs to the walls and said it smelled like Oregon...

I totally forgot about that. I definitely watch more for the "entertainment" factor, but I do agree with this. I also think when someone asks them not to touch their ceiling fan or fireplace (or anything!), those things should definitely be off limits.

I only saw a few minutes of episodes during its first run when flipping through channels & am shocked anyone would consider or celebrate its return. It was incredibly disrespectful of homeowners & their property. While I've rarely watched HGTV in the last few years, I'll definitely skip it now!
