Alrighty, it looks like we are going to replace some flooring in our home. We have an office on the main floor and our dd's bedroom that we are starting with. My dh and brother are going to do the install. My brother has installed a few floors so I'm not concerned about that part. I'm hoping my dh gets this as we want to do our living/dining room combo too at some point.
What do you recommend? DH said something about laminate and a"floating" floor.
Thoughts? Recommendations? Where to purchase? Things to stay away from?
Anything else I need to know?

I'd go walk on a laminate floor. I had it in my old house, and even with the good, sound deadening underlayment, it was still very hollow and echoey. Make sure you're good with it.

We installed laminate in 2 bedrooms about 8 or 9 years ago and it has not held up well at all. There are some worn spots and buckling from pet accidents and spills. If you don't have pets or spills and aren't 'rough' on your floors, you may not have those problems.
Personally, I would never go with laminate again. We're replacing the carpet in our living room soon and are going with wood-look porcelain tile.

The flooring from cost co is what all the builders here use. Ours has held for 18 years....dog, cats, a parrot and a vomit comet child.
In the new house we put the 68 cent flooring from Home Depot. I like the consist color. And it really doesn't look horrible after our whole house flood last year. We are still going to replace it though.
A floating floor is one that they just snap together, there is no nailing down. It allows the floor to shift with the house.

Not a fan of laminate. It has an echo or hollow sound when a person walks on it.
We put cork in our kitchen and I do like it.
NWIW--New homes around here are using a ceramic tile that looks like wood.

Do you have any pets that may accidently pee on the floor? If so then don't put laminate.
Right now luxury vinyl plank is hot as well as the waterproof laminates. Look into COREtec its a thick waterproof click flooring. If your going to do it yourself and you like the vinyl plank I would highly suggest a click flooring. The glue down has so much prep work to the actual sub floor where a click can just go over some minor imperfections without being noticeable. The larger the mil number the more resistance to scratches it will be. The warranties don't mean crap so don't go by that. Literally the warranties only warranty the actual wear layer getting worn not scratches, indentations, anything else. So people will say it has a 30 year warranty...means nothing. COREtec will be harder to cut then regular vinyl plank because its much thicker but its super durable.
If you are not paying for installation then Lowe's, Home Depot are great options. If you are paying for installation then I don't suggest Lowe's or Home Depot because they are extremely high for the install.

We have floating engineered flooring in our basement. It’s horrible to walk on. It’s noisy and shifts as you walk. I don’t know if it’s a bad install, inferior product, or a bad subfloor, as it was here when we met bed in. But it feels cheap and even the dog doesn’t like to walk on it.

We have laminates in the bedrooms and there are no problems whatsoever. We previously had tiles but removed them due to the cold in winter. We went with the middle of the road price range which serves us well. In our previous house we had the cheap laminates which did not stand up well to normal everyday household conditions.
DH installed the boards and said it was very easy to do.

It is definitely one of these things as the floor should not shift when you walk on it! We just installed a wood laminate floating floor with Pergo Gold Underlayment and we love it. It looks beautiful, makes the house feel warmer, and is not any louder than any other hard surface floor. A friend of ours and DH installed it. We did not buy super expensive flooring - Allen + Roth from Lowe's is what we used.

I'm about to replace carpet with the wood-look porcelain tile in my small (10x8) study. If that goes well, I think I'm going to replace all the hardwood with it as well. My dogs nails have really scratched the crap out of my wood.

My house is wall to wall tile that we installed ourselves. (DH is a builder) No carpet/no wood. I LOVE it for ease of cleaning and all that. It is cold but you can put area rugs down. We've been here since we built in 2004. No cracking or lifting. Lots of use and dropped stuff.

Thank you so much for your input.
My dh has looked into it and I haven’t....yet!
So I’ll pass along everything you said and see what he says.
