Would it piss you off if somebody in your neighborhood painted their house an usual color?
Like orange, purple, blue?

absolutely.
Edited to add: I would have a problem with it, but unless we were in a HOA that covered this type of issue, I would never say/do anything about it.

I'm a firm believer that, outside of public health issues, people should have dominion over their own property.
But I also grew up in a place where those colours wouldn't be out of the ordinary - my grandmother's house was a Pepto pink, my parents' is teal.

Nope. I live in an old subdivision which is now part of the urban core. Some homes are beautifully updated and some are showing their age. It’s a sought after neighborhood and ugly houses aren’t a deterrent to sales.

Nope.
About two blocks away there is a house painted bubble gum pink with highlighter yellow polka dots. Makes me smile every time I see it.
I don’t believe this is the kind of thing that can or should be regulated by neighbors or government.
I would never even consider looking at a house in an HOA.

I would never tell someone what color they could paint their house and we have a ton of variety of houses in our neighborhood...but those colors would stick out like a sore thumb in my very wooded area, so I'm not sure exactly how I would feel about it. There is a purple house in a neighborhood I drive past (also similar wooded area), it makes me happy to see, but I don't know if I would feel the same as a neighbor.

No. My husband and I bought a house in a non-HOA neighborhood because we wanted to do as we pleased with our homes. Before we bought our house we lived in a condo that was part of an HOA. We had a red curtain over our kitchen window and after a year of living there we were told we could only have white, black, or brown curtains on our windows. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life in a world of beige.

Backstory:
My genius husband had a brain fart the day he ordered our shingles. The shingles are terracotta orange and old brick brown. So no blues grays greens purples pinks for a house color.
I am now thinking that an orangey (ish) white might look good And have the added bonus of annoying a few people. We don't have HOA so we can paint whatever colour we like.

Is it something small, like a door or mailbox? I'm fine with that. My front door of my boxy beige house is blue, several neighbors have red, blue, yellow doors on their boxy beige, brown, tan and white houses.
But painting the whole house some vivid color would not make me happy. I'd be rounding the corner of "upset" heading for "Pea livid"
But that's why I like having a HOA. To each their own. If you want to do that, just be sure to avoid an HOA. If you're a fan of unifomity (and boxy beige) then read the HOA rules.

As long as my neighbors keep their homes up, no junkyards, etc. I couldn't care less about the color of the house. In fact, I'd likely love it.
I agree with the theory that you get to do what you want with property you own. I would never live in a HOA. I'd never even look at a home in one.

Nope
My neighbors house is white with burgundy trim. He painted the trim a few years ago going for the same color trim. The first paint he brought on was a pink color. He went with it for a bit thinking it would dry darker. It didn't. He repainted with the correct color, but he said there were lots of really slow cars going with funny looks from other neighbors the day of the pink paint. It really wasn't that bad.

That doesn’t sound that far out there, it sounds like a lot of the Spanish style homes in Southern California. Go for it!

I don't know that it'd piss me off, and up until recently "odd" colors on houses didn't bug me at all - until someone a few blocks away painted their house bright school bus yellow with cookie monster blue trim - it stands out like a sore thumb and I'm very thankful that I don't have to look at it every day. They not only painted the house, but the mailbox, the flowerbed surrounds and any other object in the yard that would stand still long enough to be painted. It's the ugliest thing I've ever seen. The house next door is for sale, and I'm dying to know if it was put up for sale after the paint job or if the paint job was done after it went on the market to discourage anyone from buying the property and moving in next door...

I wouldn't care. In our old neighborhood someone had a pepto pink house and I thought it was hilarious. They also had 2 Doberman and were bikers.

Somebody in our neighborhood put on a bright blue tile roof. It was heinous, but I figured it was their problem. The house sold recently and the first thing they did was replace the roof!

Hmm. I live in the "brightest" house in the neighborhood, probably. We repainted last summer; the house is the same color it was originally, but the paint had faded to a paler yellow. I love it, and painted the shutters green. We look like a daffodil!

No, most of the houses in Ireland are painted bright colours. I love it, it's a happy thing to me.

this thread makes my head spin
i certainly don't care what color someone paints and it doesn't pain me to look at any type/color home
i try to not be a twit about things like that
american HOA neighborhoods are so plain, vanilla
i think the color livens things up
my house has cedar siding - and my door and roof are dark brown -
i'm married to a boring paint color guy!
i LOVE european villages with brightly colored homes
so much character and personality in those homes
i always imagine HOA dwellers being named Karen and pissy about something!
i know it's a stereotype and all but - whoa - lots beige going on
i love being able to do and build as i please
and i don't give two shits what my neighbors think -

Our neighbor tried to reroof in that color, but she had something happen health wise that affect how she saw colors. Her blue roof is bright red brick. And then to make it even more gorgeous ..... She had the place sided in duck egg blue.

No way that sort of thing can be controlled where I live so I’d just have to make the best of it. Thankfully all of my neighbours have gone with neutral colours.

No, it wouldn't.
I've been looking at houses. My favorite is <1K sq ft and dark blue. It is very well done.
Within a 5 mile radius, there is a house with bubble gum pink shutters and the "Barney house" (Barney purple). I find them amusing.

Every home in my 1950s neighborhood has a brick front. All different, but somewhat the same. Mine is a very light beige. I have wood siding around the rest of my house and it is painted a cream color that shows every bit of dirt. I hate it. This summer we are having our house repainted. I went up to look very closely at the roof. I live in a ranch so it's hard for a shorty to see from the front of the house. And my roof is green. So we decided to go with a green color on the siding. I cannot wait. I feel like it is going to really freshen up the look of my house. Last summer, I put a green chair on my front porch and added a decorative sign.
I love color on homes. I love our neighborhood. It's affordable, but it does sometimes seem like all the houses look the same. My ex and I once considered moving to an urban neighborhood of newly built, mixed housing. The homes in there were adorable. Beautiful colors all around. We never did buy there, but I always thought that neighborhood would be fun to live in.

The older couple who lived in the house directly across from mine painted their house purple. Not a bright purple. It didn't bother us at all. When the house sold the new owner painted over the purple with brown.

Nope, but I live in a mixed neighborhood of manufactured homes, ranch homes, tri-level homes, and low income apartments. Not exactly upscale. I'm just happy the neighbors that hung a dead dear from the tree in the front yard moved.
