I have to put my daughter's number on her soccer bag. There is already a number on there but it is the wrong one so I need to cover up the old number and put her number on. It is regular sort of (student) backpack material. Do you think I should use regular vinyl -- which seems a lot easier to apply -- or am I going to need the heat transfer vinyl? And, will the heat transfer vinyl even work?
I am planning on cutting out a square of black vinyl and then placing white numbers on the black square.

Isn't regular vinyl just going to be sticky? If you think it'll hold, maybe, but I would think with all the jostling and putting stuff in and out it would come off. I've used heat transfer for us on clothes and, for the most part, it stays put. Maybe iron it to the vinyl backing you plan to use to cover the incorrect number and then adhere the black square with the number for double protection?

Definitely heat transfer. I doubt regular vinyl will stay on. Because you need to cover up the old number I would probably apply the heat transfer vinyl to fabric and sew it on.

If the bag is made of polyester or anything synthetic (which it could be) it might melt if you try to iron something on it. In that case, I would iron the number onto a piece of fabric and sew that onto the bag over the other number.
