Hi All,
I'm trying to emboss using a due cut and embossing mat but my paper keeps tearing. Has anyone else had this problem? Or problems with technique in general? Any tips? Thank you!

Which machine are you using?
For my Cuttlebug I use (bottom to top) A + B + embossing pad + cardstock + die + B (I think)

Sometimes if the paper is thin or the folder really detailed the embossed edges crack ...I have a Vagabond.

It might be the paper is too thin or you may be applying too much pressure. Are you using a Spellbinders type die where you run it through twice (first to cut and than to emboss)? I have a whole page of configurations for my Big Shot. If you could please give me a few more details it might be something I can help with.

From bottom to top: platform base, then the rubber mat, then die-cut, then paper, then an embossing plate. Thanks for any help!

chances, here’s what I’ve got: First pass—bottom to top—platform for thin dies, plate, die, paper, plate. Remove the extra paper leaving the cut image in the die. Second pass—bottom to top—platform for thin dies, shim (I use a thin piece of cardboard), die with cut image inside, 2 rubber mats, plate (or shim depending on whether your plate is warped. I know this sounds complicated but it’s all that works for me. I came up with this after a lot of trial and error after watching some YouTube videos, all of which used the Spellbinder machine. I could find nothing for the Big Shot but that was years ago. It gives you the general idea. I’d suggest experimenting to see what works best for you.

It sounds to me like it may be the paper you chose. Some paper will cut fine, but tear when you try to emboss it.

The smooth papers that die cut nice crisp edges can crack when embossed. A paper with more rag in it may work better on the edges of an embossing die. You could also try a thin piece of copy paper between the embossing die and the CS you are embossing. Your image won't be as crisp, but it may not crack. Humid weather is the best time to emboss. That extra bit of moisture in the paper is helpful. But you can't always just emboss on humid days.

If you have a way to provide humidy that helps too: a steamer or maybe a steam iron? i have had success sandwiching the piece I want to emboss between two other pieces of paper. Then I get 3 embossed pieces to play with.
