I've worked there since October.
Since I started, six assistant managers have been hired and fired, and sixteen co-workers have been fired or quit (mostly fired).
I've never worked where there was such instability.
Any wise words?

Honestly, I'd start looking for a new job. That's insane. I'm sorry.

Wow that is crazy turnover. Is it that they are recruiting the wrong people and hiring people not suitable or is there a real culture problem that you've noticed.

The pay is low, and I think most people who come in think that they won't have to work hard because of it. But then someone who had been there for 14 yrs was just fired. One day he was the go to guy. Next he was gone. I have no idea why.

I'd have my eyes and ears open for a new job, but at this point, I don't think you'd be remiss in talking with your manager about this. That's pretty crazy. No one has any idea why the guy with 14 years was fired? Do they want to keep you? Do you want to stay? You need to know more.

Oh my goodness. How incredibly stressful for you. Time to look around and see what's out there if you have to bail quickly. I imagine your manager is in the same boat as everyone else.

As others have said, I'd be looking for something else. Stat! In the meantime I would be saving as much money as I could just in case they let me go.
I'm sorry to hear that you are in this situation. It must be stressful.

What kind of industry? I think this is somewhat common in some areas - especially in low pay positions where they hire a bunch for the holidays, then have to let them go.

Is is possible that there is something going on behind the scenes that you don't know about? I read your question and thought about 2 times when a new hire might have gotten similar vibes in companies I have worked in:
1) The account was failing, and a temporary leadership team replaced the established team. That team settled in and began cleaning house. I was one of the first new hires, and I was hired with the intention of replacing one of the temporary leaders. There was a lot of turnover all over during that time because the leadership was taking a really hard look at who was successful and who was part of the problem. Thinking of this from the perspective of someone who didn't know what was going on, it probably would have looked a lot like your situation. After things settled down, we had a full year period without any turnover at all.
2) A subcontactor was being replaced. Since we didn't really differentiate between those who were actually an employee and those who worked for the subcontractor, it is possible that most employees had no clue why so many people were suddenly being replaced.
I'm not saying that either of those are the case, but that sometimes, there is just stuff going on that isn't obvious to everyone. The leadership team doesn't always know what the perception on the front line is...and we sometimes don't figure it out until someone asks.

That is a lot of turnover. Is this a company isn't doing well and is trying to reduce expenses? Were there any other problems that you were aware of? Poor performance issues that were never addressed? Possible corruption with employees lying about hours actually worked or stealing? With that many people let go or fired, I would hope management issues some type of statement as to what's going on or at minimum offers some type of reassurances. Just to be on the safe side, I'd start looking elsewhere as well. Better to leave on your own terms than to be let go without any warning.

You either work at the White House or you should probably be looking for a new job. I’m sorry, that must be very stressful. I’d definitely be trying to take some sense of control back through looking for a job in your terms before you have to.

You either work at the White House That made me laugh out loud. I agree, keep an eye out for a new job, document, document, document, and hopefully things will even out. And, if you work for the White House, my sympathies.

LOL.... Not the White House. Made me laugh, though.
I work at a thrift store.
I think the problem is that the store is inspected every week. Any problems, and the manager gets a write up. The manager then writes up employees. I think a specific # of write ups in a certain period of time and you are fired.

above and beyond the turnover, it's weird to me that no one talks about it. i must have worked at the most gossipy places ever because as soon as heads start rolling, tongues start wagging. it's not uncommon in low paying jobs to see lots of turnover... but then the reason it pretty clear... they found something better or even equal (low pay doesn't usually result in a lot of loyalty). i would be updating my resume, brushing up on interview techniques and keeping my eyes open!

That’s very stressful! Unless you can pinpoint exactly why it’s happenong (bad hiring practices, manager retiring and doesn’t care) I think I would be looking at option job options.

I agree with this, especially in the retail world. A while back, I worked at a big box craft store, in a few different positions over time. People might not have know the true story, or the whole story, but they were definitely talking!
