Looking at getting a bed...we've always had a mattress, but when we went from Queen sized to King several years ago, we didn't purchase a headboard/foot board for it, waiting to find something we loved. The mattress and box springs have just been sitting on a basic metal frame. Welllllll.....a lot of years and another kid later, I'm back to looking for something to boost our bedroom from looking like a newlywed's first apartment into a master bedroom, lol! Several of the upholstered headboards have caught my eye, but I have to wonder, do they get dirty, and how do you clean them?? I would imagine they'd have some kind of slipcover you could take off to wash and replace, but I haven't come across anything like that. They are gorgeous new, but after a few years, don't they start to just look grimy? My niece and her husband actually built and made their headboard, and she upholstered it with that leather looking material. She even tufted it, it looks awesome! I'm wondering if I should go that route and not the linen look of most of the manufactured ones. But I love the look of the linen ones. Ugh. THIS is why, after 15 years, we STILL don't have a grown up bed! I've had a blast and been so bold in decorating my kid's rooms through the years, but doing ours for some reason has always paralyzed me... I just can't commit to buying something significant for our own room. Can't wait to hear what ya'll have, what you like about it and what you don't! Cindy

I've wondered this as well. I downsized from a king to a queen last year and I still need a headboard. I had a medium brown real leather headboard before and I loved it...and other than some light scratches (which add character IMO) it held up beautifully for 10 years. In a perfect world I'd love a woven cane headboard,,,,but I have a feeling that it would be like a moth to a flame for my two cats. Sorry for the little hijack

I do. It was pretty at first. But now a few years later it looks kinda grungy. It's hard to clean and my cats scratch on it sometimes. It also has a bunch of pills in the fabric where the pillows rub against it.

I think the fabric headboards look nice but I have visions of my cats liking it too much. I don’t know how well they hold up though. I have never in my entire life had a bed with a headboard.

There have been several upholstered headboards in the family over the decades. All DIY. Never issues with anything more than dust along the top or in the buttons or brads. But pets weren't an issue for us.

We had an upholstered headboard a few year ago. We liked it - but we our dogs would lick It. Dust a big deal (the area where I live is extremely dusty) as well. We ended up keeping the headboard for less than a year before getting a wooden headboard.
My advice? If you have pets, I would pass.

Not to mention if your heads touch the headboard, even just occasionally, it will get your natural body oils, or in this case, hair oils.
Yeah they look pretty in the magazines and showrooms, but not so practical, I would think.

Yeah, we made our own upholstered headboard a few years ago and I'm ready to replace it. There are a bunch of pulls on DH's side. I finally figured out it was his wedding ring catching on it.
I vacuum to deal with the dust, but do wonder how trapped dust and dander affects our allergies.

No. I have a rubbed oil brass headboard. I have only the headboard, not the footboard. It looks something like this.

We have one and I love it. We ordered it from a company that no longer exists, unfortunately. It is not actually a headboard-- it hangs on the wall much like a picture. You wouldn't really know this, though.
We have six squares-- three going across and two down (queen size bed). We chose the fabric after receiving some samples. Our squares are not tufted.
I've had no problem keeping it clean. I vacuum it very occasionally-- once a year, really. It can be taken off the wall to clean. It's very lightweight.
We also have a policy that we don't put our heads directly on it. We do prop pillows up against it, but we put our heads on the pillows and not on the headboard directly. This sounds restrictive, but it's really not.
We've had it for several years and it looks great. I should probably take a picture of it and share.

We have a queen size one. It’s a taupe color, so it doesn’t look look any different than when we got it. We have 2 cats, and I haven’t noticed them bother it.
We’re moving next month and get to upsize to a king, and I’m hoping to find another upholstered headboard. I like how it softens the room.

I do not but both of my daughters have recently upgraded from twins to queen and full beds and they both chose upholstered headboards from Wayfair. One is actually a platform bed, with grey upholstery and tufted with some nail trim. The other is a light off white tufted. They were both very affordable and look great.

I have a cream leather upholstered headboard, which is around three years old and has held up quite well. I would never have gotten a fabric headboard because of DH's tendency to be careless with ink pens, and I worried about being able to keep it clean. Aside from having to dust the top with the weekly change of sheets, and one small snag from the cat, it looks like new.

We have a taupe upholstered headboard from Costco. It has a slight velvety feel. Not sure the exact word for it, but it's not actually velvet (ewe) but nice soft fabric with a knap. Anyway, we have had it 3 years and it's been through a cross-country move with no complaints. It looks just as great as the day it arrived. I have vacuumed the top once or twice for dust, even though I don't notice any. We have euro shams and regular pillows, so heads generally don't hit the headboard. Will this last 15+ years like a wooden headboard? Probably not. But I imagine I'll want a change by then, and these will probably be out if style by then, too.

No, I have a wood one that was made locally. Leather would be okay, but IMO, fabric would get too dusty and dirty for me. It would be too difficult/ too much work to keep it looking good. I am a lazy house cleaner.

Yeah, we've had one for 5 years. No issues whatsoever. Our is made of a light brown heavier weight fabric, but DH is bald and I see what that does to pillow case covers after a week. No such problrm with the headboard/frame at all. I don't think we really touch it much at all, so not sure how it would get dirty. And not getting any fustier than an upholstered couch. We are way harder on couches than headboards. If a car seat can be upholsteted, certainly a headboard can. What are y'all doing in bed? :-D

well hmmm....very insightful, thank you for sharing your experiences! We do have a dog, and he's usually either in our son's room or the foot of the bed, unless there's a storm. Then he's on our head. Literally. I have pictures. LOL!! I thought yall would completely talk me out of it...but you failed. What I'm pretty sure I've decided to do is go for it, but not with an expensive one. If/when it gets dirtier than I can clean, (main concern is body grime, hair oils, etc) I'll try my hand at re-covering it. I'm pretty handy and love to do that kind of thing anyway. If it works, yay, if not, we got to have an upholstered headboard for a few years, and I'll replace it then. I'll just make sure to balance cost/value, to make sure I feel like we got our money's worth for the time we use it, and not get upset when it's time to replace. Thanks so much for all your input, it was really valuable to me!

I have a light linen-colored microfiber one that's probably five or six years old, and looks great. We don't specifically avoid leaning against it or touching it, and I sometimes grab onto it, if you know what I mean. No oily spots, no dinginess, no grime.
Frankly, I'd love to have to buy something new, but it's still in perfect shape.
