In response to mary 's thread about how you DE-stash, how do you actually USE the stash you have collected so lovingly? For the 100 Days Project, I have decided to take out my art supplies--paints, crayons, gelatos, alcohol and other inks, stains, sprays, pastes--and actually USE them. Some of the results I have been able to use on cards or scrapbook pages, but I have put together a box with a binder in it to collect the bits and pieces I have left. Hoping to end up with some cool samples that may inspire me in the future to use these supplies more often. And, I find, that once I start using a supply or technique, I am more likely to keep doing that. Now that art supplies are top of my mind--and top of my scrap counter--they find their way onto more projects. After Calvinball, I find I am thinking more about how to incorporate my stamps and my die cutting machines into page designs (and birds ). I call that inertia at work. I also store my papers and extras by theme, so when I am doing some hockey pages--as I have been in the last few days--I have a bag of papers and scraps and stickers and whatever else all in one place, so I was able to just pull out that bag and start scrapping. Of course, I have to talk myself into leafing through drawers with themes I don't use very often so that I remember what is tucked away there. With MY mind, that is sometimes like Christmas when I discover just what I want to play with! What do YOU do to keep your stash in the game?

As you mentioned, I scrap by theme, and much of my stash is organized by theme. When I have a set of photos, I think about what I have that fits the theme of the photos. Now sadly there is quite a bit of my stash that is not put away - it is in bags and bins. So sometimes I find myself rooting through those bins and bags for whatever I might want to use.
I am also not too concerned with cramming things onto the page. For example, artistically a page may look finished, but I have an embellie or paper or whatever that works for the theme and probably won't get used again, so I squeeze it in.
My pages try to tell my story using everything I put on the page, so my biggest challenge to using my stash is having more than I can fit on a page and not go overboard.

I never hesitate to cut the paper or use an embellishment.

I just pulled out my jar of flair, my jar of arrow paper clips, and my jar of chipboard geotags and cameras. I set them right in front so I can see them. Now I’m adding them to my layouts. When they were out of sight, I wasn’t using them.
I also switch up my washi rolls I put in sight. About 6 rolls so I start using the one that are right there.

At the beginning of the year, I decided to use my stamps more. So I took my largest acrylic block and started pulling stamps from my stash...I put as many as I could on the block. I now keep it on my desk and make a point of looking through it before/during every layout to find something I can use on my page. I think it is time to put those stamps away (3+ months on my desk) and pull some new ones.
I also have a divided 'pickle dish' on my desk where I keep little leftovers, bits and bobs; I look through this often for that 'one little thing' that might work on a layout. A scrap of trim and a piece of ribbon from that dish made it on to last night's layout.

Right now, I am trying to use up buttons and stitch more so my sewing machine is out and I keep a cup of buttons on my desk as a reminder.

I never hesitate to cut the paper or use an embellishment. Yep! Me too. I used to hoard paper that I loved but now I just buy more of it and use it as often as I can!

I usually just pick something I want to use more and then it stays in my mind to look at that item while embellishing if it's flair or stickers, etc. If it's stamps, I tend to search through my stamps and pull before starting the page, since I may want to include the stamp on the background.
For paper, I use kit club kits and manufacturer collections as my base for projects. After I've printed photos, they get put in whatever bag I think best matches their story. I occasionally will add stash paper to kits or collections if I think they go with it or put 2 kits/collections together. If my photos don't have a match in the kit or collection, I'll build a page kit from my stash.

Living too far from any LSS helps, lol. I have to shop from my stash. I don't have any choice. I don't like buying paper online, or anything where color matters. I live at least 45 minutes from the nearest LSS, which cuts the temptation to run to the store. I rarely like what the big box stores offer.
I do have a huge stash, and it is organized enough that I can go through and find what I want fairly easily. I just need to organize my time, and plan time to scrapbook. Inviting friends used to help, but since moving, the scrapping friends I have made seem to need my help to the point that I don't get much of my own scrapping done. I mostly end up helping them. I need to just plan my own private scrapping time.

The challenges on this board make me use my stash. I have a hard time finding a reason to dig through all my stuff except that the challenge says it has to be on my page, so dammit I'm going to find or make something that works!

These are great suggestions! For me, out of sight, out of mind, so like others have said I put the items I want to use in a prominent place on my scrap desk. I really need to challenge myself tobuse some stash before playing with (or buying more) new goodies!

I definitely use an assortment of things mentioned above.
I "shop from my stash" due to lack of LSS and waiting to buy online until I have a larger orders (so not as often as I'd like).
I tend to make up "kits" that I can take when I scrap away from home--not like a crop--but more quick get togethers with friends. So I am using my stash all the time for those little projects.
Keeping my main things really organized helps a lot--so I know right where to look for items in a system that makes sense for me.
I tend to love my stash--it is mostly stuff I bought that I LOVED (and usually still do, sometimes even more depending on manufacturer), so I do tend to remember it and use it more carefully than "using it up." But it is often the "best" option I have for what I want to scrap, so I use it.

I haven't scrapped much this year due to a new job and life sucking down all my energy....
But I find the best way to use my stash is to stop buying, for the most part. This year, I've only bought two sheets of stickers, because they were perfect for the photos I had just taken.
Everything else has just been using my stash.
Also, like you, I keep my themed stuff together in large Ziploc bags. It's easier to remember to use it if it's all right in front of you.

I've found...er, I mean read... using supplies is counterproductive if your actual hobby is organization! After all, why incur the expense of replacing supplies used when you can simply reorganize the ones you already have over & over again? If you use supplies, your purchases merely replace them; wouldn't you rather spend your money on new supplies to grow your existing inventory & create new organizational challenges (think of all those storage bins & furniture pieces on your wish list)?

Well if this isn't just a spot on thread for me. This weekend I set my mind to use all those old bits of everything that I know in the back of my mind are not going to be put to use unless the are combined with other little bits to make something more. So here is what I did, and I am bound and determined to continue on until I use up all that old stuff that I keep passing by. I assure you much more to come. 29983473_10215548294810844_8315613633165682299_o by Maribeth and Jim Robison, on Flickr

With MY mind, that is sometimes like Christmas when I discover just what I want to play with! I store by theme too. It's a good reminder for me to go through mine more often because often certain items can cross over to another subject. There are a few items I've got from grab bag boxes that are hard for me to use, so I look for card ideas to use them up.

I have been shopping and organizing more than creating over the past few years. I have also been delving into stamping, card making and learning about new techniques. My weekly trips to our new TM have resulted in an over abundace of paper. I needed to use some of it up so I went through each pad and tore out the paper I knew I’d never use. The stack now sits on my desk and gets used daily as test paper for die cutting, mixed media, stamping, etc. It hasn’t made a huge dent in my stash but at least it’s getting used up. One day the paper will actually make its way into my albums.
