UPDATE - 04/17
The plastic surgeon recommended a bilateral mastectomy, given the multifocal nature of my cancer and the density of my breasts. The cancer surgeon agrees, so on Monday morning, both breasts are going to go. I’ll go straight into reconstruction surgery after the mastectomies. I’ll stay 1-2 nights in the hospital - a benefit of military hospitals is that they don’t rush you out the door.
I’ve filled out a boatload of pre-op paperwork and have my prescription of Emend to take that morning. I’ve been given a demonstration of how to empty my drains, and made to practice handling one. The reality is sinking in and my fear/anxiety is going up. I’ll be relieved to have this behind, rather than in front, of me.
Thank you all, again, for all of your support!
******************************************** And I have an second area of invasive ductal carcinoma in that same breast, so mastectomy it is. I won’t know about chemo until after the surgery, but more likely now that I have multifocal invasive cancer.
I’m meeting with both my oncology surgeon and my plastic surgeon on Tuesday.
Surgery is one week from tomorrow. It can’t come soon enough!

Oh Elaine, I'm sorry to hear this devastating news. Though I'll pray that you won't need chemo. My thoughts are with you. You will get through this and thrive. When you're on the board as a survivor you'll be a force to be reckoned with when someone with a new diagnosis needs support. As I said before, cancer will shudder in your presence.

I'm so sorry to hear your news. I'm having eye surgery on Tuesday at Belvoir. I'll keep you in my prayers! I wish you good luck on your eye surgery at Belvoir! I’ve seen some of the eye docs there. I hope that all goes smoothly. If you would like visitors at Belvoir, just let me know. I’ll be done at Walter Reed at 11. We can easily swing down to Belvoir after.
